Abu Hatim said: Al-Asma'i did not know what al-zilf was, but I heard from others that al-zilf are the green basins.
قال القتيبي: وقد فسرت الزلفة، في حديث يأجوج ومأجوج الذي تقدم آنفا بالمحارة هي: الصدفة
Al-Qutaybi said: I have explained al-zulfah in the hadith of Gog and Magog mentioned earlier as 'al-maharah', which means the shell.
قال: ولست أعرف هذا التفسير، إلا أن يكون الغدير يسمى محارة، لأن الماء يحور إليه، ويجتمع فيه، فيكون بمنزلة تفسيرنا
He said: I do not know this interpretation, unless the pond is called 'maharah' because the water collects and gathers in it, thus being equivalent to our interpretation.
قال: وقال أبو عمر و: الزلفة في هذا البيت مصنعة الماء.
He said: Abu Amr said: Al-zulfah in this verse refers to a water cistern.
الزلفة: الأرض الغليظة، قيل: هي الأرض المكنوسة، قيل: هو المستوي من الجبل الدمث:
Al-zulfah: the rough ground; it is said to be the swept ground, or the level part of the gentle mountain.

And Al-zulfah, with dammah: its water is east of Samarra. Ubaid ibn Ayyub said: By your life, on the day I was at the heights of Zulfah, I was steadfast in what I saw behind my neck.

أقم الصلاة طرفي النهار وزلفا من الليل
Establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night.
فإذا زالت الشمس فازدلف إلى الله فيه بركعتين
