Ibn Duraid said: Al-hashafah is a soft rock surrounded by flat land, or it is a rock that grows in the sea
إن موضع بيت الله كانت حشفة فدحا الله الأرض عنها
Indeed, the place of the House of God was a small island, and God expanded the earth from it.

It is said: A man is mutahashshif: wearing ragged clothes
قال ابن دريد: حشف الرجل عينه تحشيفا: إذا ضم جفونه، ونظر من خلل هدبها
Ibn Duraid said: A man squinted his eye (hashshafa 'aynahu): when he narrowed his eyelids and looked through the fringe of his eyelashes.
واستحشفت الأذن: إذا يبست فتقبضت
And the ear became shriveled (istahshafat): if it dried and contracted
وكذلك ضرع الأنثى إذا تقلص وتقبض، يقال: قد استحشف
And likewise the udder of the female if it contracted and shriveled, it is said: it has become shriveled (istahshafa).
وفي المثل: أحشفا وسوء كيلة
And in the proverb: 'Stale dates and bad measure'
أي: أتجمع التمر الرديء والكيل المطفف يضرب في خلتي إساءة تجتمعان على الرجل
Meaning: Do you gather bad dates and short measure? It is said about two evils that meet in a man.
وأحشف ضرع الناقة: إذا تقبض واستشن، أي: صار كالشن
And the camel's udder became shriveled (ahshafa): if it contracted and became dry, meaning: it became like a waterskin.
ورأيت فلانا متحشفا: أي سيء الحال متقهلا، رث الهيئة
And I saw so-and-so in a bad state (mutahashshifan): meaning, in a poor condition, disheveled in appearance
