وعمير بن وهب بن خلف بن وهب بن حذافة بن جمح، أبو أمية أحد أشراف بني جمح، وكان من أبطال قريش، قدم المدينة ليغدر برسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فأسلم، قاله ابن فهد.
And Umair bin Wahb bin Khalaf bin Wahb bin Hudhafah bin Jamh, Abu Umayyah, one of the nobles of Banu Jamh, and he was one of the heroes of Quraish, he came to Medina to assassinate the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), so he embraced Islam, according to Ibn Fahd.
والذي في أنساب أبي عبيد، أن عميرا هذا أسر يوم بدر، ثم أسلم، وابنه وهب بن عمير، الذي كان ضمن لصفوان بن أمية أن يقتل النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، ثم أسلم.
And what is in the genealogies of Abu Ubaid is that this Umair was captured on the day of Badr, then he embraced Islam, and his son Wahb bin Umair, who had pledged to Safwan bin Umayyah to kill the Prophet (peace be upon him), then he embraced Islam.
وعيينة بن حصن بن حذيفة بن بدر الفزاري، شهد حنينا والطائف، وكان أحمق مطاعا، دخل على النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بغير إذن، وأساء الأدب، فصبر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم على جفوته واعرابيته، وقد ارتد، وآمن بطليحة، ثم أسر، فمن عليه الصديق، ثم لم يزل مظهرا للإسلام، وكان يتبعه عشرة آلاف قتات، وكان من الجرارة، واسمه حذيفة، ولقبه عيينة لشتر عينه، وسيأتي في) عين (.
And Uyaynah bin Hisn bin Hudhayfah bin Badr Al-Fazari, witnessed Hunayn and Ta'if, and he was an obedient fool, he entered upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) without permission, and behaved rudely, so the Prophet (peace be upon him) was patient with his harshness and his Bedouin manners, and he apostatized, and believed in Talhah, then he was captured, and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) pardoned him, then he continued to outwardly profess Islam, and ten thousand fighters followed him, and he was from Al-Jarrarah, and his name was Hudhayfah, and his nickname was Uyaynah due to his squinting eye, and it will be mentioned later under (ayn).
وهشام بن عمرو بن ربيعة بن الحارث العامري، أحد المؤلفة قلوبهم بدون مائة من الإبل، وكان أحد من قام في نقض الصحيفة، وله في ذلك أثر عظيم، رضي الله تعالى عنهم أجمعين.
And Hisham bin Amr bin Rabi'ah bin Al-Harith Al-Amiri, one of those whose hearts were reconciled without a hundred camels, and he was one of those who stood up to break the treaty, and he had a great impact in that, may Allah be pleased with them all.
وقد فاته: طليق بن سفيان، أبو حكيم المذكور، فقد ذكرهما ابن فهد والذهبي في المؤلفة قلوبهم، وكذا هشام بن الوليد بن المغيرة المخرومي، أخو خالد بن الوليد، هكذا ذكره بعضهم، ولكن نظر فيه.
And he missed: Talik bin Sufyan, Abu Hakim, the one mentioned, as Ibn Fahd and Al-Dhahabi mentioned them among those whose hearts were reconciled, and likewise Hisham bin Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah Al-Makhzumi, the brother of Khalid bin Al-Walid, thus some mentioned him, but it was considered.
وقد قال بعض أهل العلم: إن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم تألف في وقت بعض سادة الكفار، فلما دخل الناس في دين الله أفواجا، وظهر أهل دين الله على جميع أهل الملل، أغنى الله تعالى وله الحمد عن أن يتألف كافر اليوم بمال يعطي، لظهور أهل دينه على جميع الكفار، والحمد لله رب العالمين.
And some scholars have said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) reconciled at one time some of the chieftains of the disbelievers, and when people entered the religion of Allah in multitudes, and the people of Allah's religion prevailed over all other religions, Allah Almighty, and to Him be praise, made it unnecessary to reconcile a disbeliever today by giving him money, due to the prevalence of His religion over all disbelievers, and praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds.
وتألف فلان فلانا: إذا داره، وآنسه، وقاربه، وواصله، حتى يستميله إليه، ومنه حديث حنين: إني أعطي رجالا حديثي عهد بكفر أتألفهم أي: أداريهم، وأونسهم، ليثبتو على الإسلام، رغبة فيما يصل إليهم من المال.
And 'Talaafa fulan fulanan' means: if he deals with him kindly, makes him feel at ease, draws him near, and maintains relations with him, until he wins him over to him, and from this is the hadith of Hunayn: 'I give to men who have recently left disbelief, to reconcile them,' meaning: I appease them, and make them feel at ease, so that they remain firm in Islam, desiring what they may receive from the wealth.
تألف القوم تألفا: اجتمعوا، كائتلفوا ائتلافا، وهما مطاوعا ألفهم تأليفا.
'Ta'allafa al-qawmu ta'allufan': The people gathered, as if they united in union, and these are the passive forms of 'Allafahum ta'lifan' (He united them).
جمع ألف آلف، كفلس وأفلس، ومنه قول بكير أصم بني الحارث بن عباد: عربا ثلاثة آلف وكتيبة ... ألفين أعجم من بني الفدام
The plural of 'alf' is 'aalif', like 'fals' and 'aflas', and from this is the saying of Bukayr Asamm of Banu Al-Harith bin Abbad: 'Arabs, three thousand and a battalion... two thousand non-Arabs from Banu Al-Faddam.'
وقد يقال: الألف (محركة في} الآلاف، في ضرورة الشعر، قال: وكان حاملكم منا ورافدكم ... وحامل المين بعد المين والألف
And it may be said: 'Al-alf' (with harakah) in 'Al-aalaf', in poetic necessity, he said: 'And your carrier from us and your supporter... and the carrier of lies after lies and the thousand.'
فإنه أراد الآلاف، فحذف للضرورة، وكذلك أراد المئين، فحذف الهمزة.
For he intended 'thousands', so he omitted it out of necessity, and likewise he intended 'hundreds', so he omitted the hamzah.
وآلف القوم: صاروا ألفا، ومنه الحديث: أول حي آلف مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بنو فلان.
And 'Aalafa al-qawmu' means: they became a thousand, and from this is the hadith: 'The first tribe to become a thousand with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) were Banu Fulan.'
وألف الشيء كعلم، إلافا وولافا، بكسرهما، الأخيرة شاذة، وألفانا محركة: لزمه، كألفه، من حد ضرب.
And 'Alifa al-shay'a ka-'alima', 'ilaafan' and 'wilaafan', with the kasrah of both, the latter is irregular, and 'alfaanan' (with harakah): it became attached to it, like 'alifahu', from the verb form 'daraba'.
وأنشد حبيب بن أوس، في باب الهجاء لمساور بن هند، يهجوبني أسد: زعمتم أن إخوتكم قريشا ... لهم إلف وليس لكم إلاف
And Habib bin Aws recited, in the chapter of satire for Musaawir bin Hind, satirizing Banu Asad: 'You claim that your brothers are Quraish... they have familiarity, and you have no familiarity.'
أولئك أومنوا جوعا وخوفا ... وقد جاعت بنو أسد وخافوا
'Those were made secure from hunger and fear... and Banu Asad have become hungry and fearful.'
وأنشد بعضهم: إلاف الله ما غطيت بيتا ... دعائمه الخلافة والنسور
And some recited: 'By the alliance of Allah, you did not cover a house... whose pillars are the Caliphate and the eagles.'
قيل: إلاف الله: أمانه، وقيل: منزلة منه.
It was said: 'Ilah Allah' means: His security, and it was said: a station from Him.
وآلف وألوف، كشاهد وشهود، وبه فسر بعضهم قوله تعالى: وهم ألوف حذر الموت
And 'aalif' and 'aluf', like 'shaahid' and 'shuhud', and with this some interpreted the saying of Allah Almighty: 'And they are thousands, fearing death.'
وبه روي قول ذي الرمة السابق أيضا، وكذا قول رؤبة: تا لله لو كنت من الآلاف
And with this the previous saying of Dhu Al-Rummah is also narrated, and likewise the saying of Ru'bah: 'By Allah, if you were from the thousands.'
قال ابن الأعرابي: أراد الذين يألفون الأنصار، واحدهم آلف.
Ibn Al-A'rabi said: He meant those who are familiar with the Ansar, and their singular is 'aalif'.
وجمع الأليف، كأمير: ألفاء، ككبراء.
And the plural of 'alif', like 'ameer', is 'alfaa', like 'kibaraa'.
وأوالف الحمام: دواجنها التي تألف البيوت.
And 'awaalif al-hamam': their domesticated pigeons that are accustomed to houses.
وآلف الرجل مؤالفة: تجر.
And 'Aalafa al-rajulu mu'aalafatan': he traded.
وألف القوم إلى كذا، وتألفوا: استجاروا.
And 'Alifa al-qawmu ila kadha', and 'ta'allafuu': they sought refuge.
والأليف، كأمير: لغة في الألف أحد حروف الهجاء.
And 'Al-alif', like 'ameer': a language for 'Alif', one of the letters of the alphabet.
وهو من المؤلفين، بالفتح: أي أصحاب الألوف: صارت إبله ألفا.
And he is from 'Al-mu'allafiin', with the fathah: meaning owners of thousands: his camels became a thousand.
وبرق إلاف، بالكسر: متتابع اللمعان.
And 'barq ilaaf', with the kasrah: successive flashes of lightning.
