And in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him: Because they, meaning the dates, were stuck in my chewing passage/throat.

والمُضَاغَةُ بالضم: ما مُضِغَ

And Al-Mudhāghah (with dammah): what has been chewed.

وقيل: ما يبقى في الفم من آخر ما مضغته

And it was said: what remains in the mouth from the last thing you chewed.

والمُضَاغَةُ بالتشديد: الأحمق

And Al-Mudhāghah (with shaddah): the fool.

والمُضْغَةُ، بالضم: قطعة من لحم، كما في الصحاح

And Al-Muḍghah (with dammah): a piece of flesh, as in Al-Sihah.

زاد الأزهري: وتكون المضغة من غيره أيضاً

Al-Azhari added: And the Muḍghah can be of something else too.

يقال: أطيب مضغة أكلها الناس صيحانية مصلبة

It is said: The most delicious lump of flesh eaten by people is the firm Saihani date.

وقال خالد بن جنبة: المضغة من اللحم: قدر ما يلقي الإنسان في فيه

And Khalid bin Junbah said: The Muḍghah of flesh: is the amount a person puts in his mouth.

ومنه قيل: في الإنسان مضغتان إذا صلحتا صلح البدن: القلب واللسان

And from this it is said: In a person are two lumps (of flesh), if they are sound, the body is sound: the heart and the tongue.

وقلب الإنسان مضغة من جسده

And the human heart is a lump of flesh from his body.

وإذا صارت العلقة التي خلق منها الإنسان لحمة فهي مضغة

And when the clot from which man was created becomes flesh, it is a Muḍghah.

وفي الحديث: ثم أربعين يوما مضغة

And in the hadith: Then forty days as a Muḍghah.

ومضغ الأمور، كسكر: صغارها، هكذا في سائر النسخ، وهو غلط، والصواب كصرد

And Maḍgh al-Umūr (like Sukkar): its minor matters, this is how it is in all copies, and it is a mistake, and the correct form is like Sird.

لل بدوي: إنا لا نتعاقل المضغ بيننا، أراد الجراحات

To the Bedouin: We do not hold each other accountable for trivial matters (maḍgh) among us, he meant wounds.

وسمى ما لا يعتد به في أصحاب الدية مضغا، تقليلا وتحقيرا

And he called what is not considered significant among those liable for blood money 'maḍgh', to diminish and belittle it.

والمضيغة، كسفينة: كل لحم على عظم، قاله ابن شميل

And Al-Muḍīghah, like Safīnah: any flesh on bone, Ibn Shumayl said.

وقال ابن دريد: المضيغة: لحمة تحت ناهض الفرس

And Ibn Durayd said: Al-Muḍīghah: flesh beneath the upper arm of a horse.

وقال الأصمعي: المضيغة: عقبة القوس التي على طرف السيتين

And Al-Asma'i said: Al-Muḍīghah: the part of the bow's end on the tip of the two string-holders.

وكل لحمة يفصل بينها وبين غيرها عرق فهي مضيغة

And any flesh separated from another by a sinew is a Muḍīghah.

والعضلة: مضيغة، قاله الليث

And the muscle: is a Muḍīghah, Al-Layth said.

والماضغان: أصول اللحيين عند منبت الأضراس بحياله

And Al-Māḍighān: the roots of the jaws near the molars.

أو هما: عرقان في اللحيين

Or they are: two veins in the jaws.

أو هما: ما شخص عند المضغ

Or they are: what protrudes when chewing.

وأمضغ النخل: صار في وقت طيبه حتى يمضغ، عن ابن عباد

And date palms became ripe for chewing: they reached their good season when they could be chewed, from Ibn 'Abbad.

وقال الزجاج: امضغ اللحم: إذا استطيب وأكل

And Al-Zajjaj said: To find meat palatable: if it is found delicious and eaten.

وقال غيره: ماضغه في القتال: إذا جاده فيه

And others said: He contended with him in combat: if he struggled intensely in it.

ونص الأساس: ماضغت فلانا مماضغة: إذا جاددته في القتال والخصومة

And the text of Al-Asas: I contended with so-and-so in a struggle: if you struggled intensely with him in combat and dispute.

ونص اللسان: ماضغه القتال والخصومة: طاوله إياهما

And the text of Al-Lisān: He contended with him in combat and dispute: he prolonged them.

ومضغه تمضيغا: ألاكه إياه

And he made him chew it thoroughly: he made him masticate it.

وكلأ مضغ، ككتف: قد بلغ أن تمضغه الراعية

And fodder that is chewable, like Katif: has reached the stage where the grazing animal can chew it.

والمواضغ: الأضراس، لمضغها صفة غالبة

And Al-Mawāḍigh: the molars, due to their dominant characteristic of chewing.

والماضغان، والماضغتان، والمضيغتان: الحنك الأعلى والأسفل، لمضغهما المأكول

And Al-Māḍighān, and Al-Māḍighatān, and Al-Muḍīghatān: the upper and lower jaws, due to their chewing of food.

وقيل: هما رؤدا الحنكين لذلك

And it was said: they are the two prominent parts of the jaws for that reason.

والمضيغة، كسفينة: كل عصبة ذات لحم، فإما أن تكون مما يمضغ، وإما أن تشبه بذلك إن كان مما لا يؤكل

And Al-Muḍīghah, like Safīnah: any sinew with flesh, whether it is something that is chewed, or resembles that if it is something not eaten.

والمضائغ من وظيفي الفرس: رؤوس الشظايتين، لأن آكلها من الوحش يمضغها

And Al-Maḍā'igh of the horse's pasterns: the heads of the two small bones, because the wild animals that eat them chew them.

والمضغ من الجراح: ما ليس له أرش مقدر معلوم، وهو مجاز

And Al-Maḍgh of wounds: what does not have a fixed, known compensation, and this is metaphorical.

وأمضغ التمر: حان أن يمضغ

And dates became ready to eat: it was time for them to be chewed.

وتمر ذو مضغة: صلب متين يمضغ كثيرا

And a date with a 'maḍghah': is firm, solid, and requires much chewing.

وهجاه هجاء ذا ممضغة: يصفه بالجودة والصلابة، كالتمر ذي الممضغة

And he insulted him with an insult of 'mamḍaghah': describing him with quality and firmness, like a date with a 'mamḍaghah'.

وإنه لذو مضغة: إذا كان من سوسه اللحم

And indeed he has a 'maḍghah': if he is infested with worms in his flesh.

ومن المجاز: هو يمضغ لحم أخيه، ورجل مضاغة للحوم الناس

And from metaphor: He chews his brother's flesh, and a man who is a 'maḍāghah' of people's flesh.

إن لم يعقني عاتق التسغسغ في الأرض فارقبني وعجم المضغ

If the shoulder of the one who is being trampled in the earth does not stop me, then watch me and experience the struggle (maḍgh).

ويقال: هو يمضغ الشيح والقيصوم: إذا كان بدويا

And it is said: He chews the Artemisia and the Qaysum: if he is a Bedouin.
