And Ibn Sidah said: We preferred Taghut in estimation over Tayghut because the inversion of the 'waw' from its position is more common than the inversion of the 'ya' in their speech.
واختلف في تفسيره: فقيل: هو ما عبد من دون الله عز وجل، وكل رأس في الضلال
And they differed in its interpretation: it was said: it is what is worshipped besides God, the Almighty, and every leader in misguidance.
وقيل: الأصنام
And it was said: the idols.
وقيل: الشيطان
And it was said: Satan.
وقيل: الكهنة
And it was said: the soothsayers.
وقيل: مردة أهل الكتاب
And it was said: the rebellious among the People of the Book.
وزاد الراغب: ويراد به الساحر والمارد من الجن، والصارف عن طريق الخير
And Al-Raghib added: and it is intended by it the sorcerer and the rebellious jinn, and the one who diverts from the path of good.
وقد يجمع على! الطواغيت، وطواغ، الأخير عن اللحياني
And it may be pluralized as Al-Tawaghit, and Tawagh, the latter from Al-Lihyani.
