His eye shed tears, like 'ja'ala' and 'naṣara', and Al-Jawhari limited it to the second pattern: 'tahma'u' and 'tahma'u' with 'ham'an', 'humū'an', 'hama'ānan', and 'tahāmā'an': it shed tears.

وفي الصحاح: أي دمعت وفي اللسان: أي سالت دموعها

And in Al-Ṣiḥāḥ: meaning it shed tears. And in Al-Lisān: meaning its tears flowed.

وكذا الطل على الشجرة إذا سقط ثم سال، يقال: همع.

And likewise dew on a tree when it falls then flows, it is said: 'hama'a'.

وسحاب همع، ككتف: ماطر

And 'saḥābun hama'un', like 'katifun': raining.

تنكر رسمها إلا بقايا ... عفا عنها همع هتون

You do not recognize its traces except for remnants... erased by flowing, falling rain.

And 'al-hayma'u', like 'ṣayqalun': a type of tree, said by Ibn 'Abbād.

وقال الليث: الهيمع: الموت الوحي، وأنشد لأبي سهم الهذلي:

And Al-Layth said: 'Al-hayma'u': sudden death, and he recited for Abi Sahm Al-Hudhali:

إذا بلغوا مصرهم عوجلوا ... من الموت بالهيمع الذاعط

When they reached their destination, they were overtaken... by sudden death, the swift.

وكذلك ابن فارس قال: ويقال بالغين أيضا

And likewise Ibn Fāris said: And it is also said with Ghayn.

والصواب: بالهميغ الميم قبل الياء، وبالغين المعجمة، وهكذا ذكره أبو عبيد

And the correct is: with 'al-hameyghu', the Meem before the Yaa, and with the dotted Ghayn, and thus Abu 'Ubayd mentioned it.

وقال أبو عبيد: سمعت الأصمعي يقول: الهميع: الموت، وأنشد قول الهذلي

And Abu 'Ubayd said: I heard Al-Aṣma'i say: 'Al-humay'u': death, and he recited the saying of Al-Hudhali.

وقال الليث: ذبح هميع: سريع.

And Al-Layth said: 'Dhibhun humay'un': swift.

وقال ابن عباد: تهمع الرجل، أي: تباكى وقيل: بكى.

And Ibn 'Abbād said: 'Taham'a al-rajulu', meaning: he pretended to cry, and it was said: he cried.

وقال أيضا: اهتمع لونه، مجهولا: إذا تغير من خوف أو فزع، وكذلك امتقع

And he also said: 'Ihtama'a lawnuhu', in the passive: when his color changed from fear or fright, and likewise 'imtaqa'a'.

أهمع الدمع والماء ونحوهما: سال، كتهمع، وأهمع الطل كذلك

Tears, water, and the like 'ahma'at': flowed, like 'tahama'at', and dew 'ahma'at' likewise.

بادر من ليل وطل أهمعا

He hurried from the night and the flowing dew.

ورواه الجوهري: وطل همعا

And Al-Jawhari narrated it: and flowing dew.

وقال الصاغاني: طل أهمع: ذي همعان.

And Al-Ṣāghānī said: 'Ṭallun ahma'u': having flowing dew.

وعين همعة: لا تزال تدمع، بنيت على صيغة الداء، كرمدت فهي رمدة

And 'aynun ham'atun': constantly shedding tears, formed like a disease, like 'ramidat fa-hiya ramdatun'.

وقال أبو زيد: همع رأسه، فهو مهموع: إذا شجه.

And Abu Zayd said: 'Hama'a ra'suhu', and it is 'mahmū'un': if his head was wounded.

والهموع، كصبور: السائل، نقله الجوهري.
