And he poked his nose, like 'wada'a', with a 'waka': he poked it.

He said: And the scorpion stung with a 'waka': it stung.

سرى في جليد الليل حتى كأنما ... تخزم بالأطراف وكع العقارب

He traveled in the cold of the night until it was as if... he was piercing with his extremities the sting of scorpions.

وكعت الحية وكعا: لسعت

The snake stung with a 'waka': it bit.

ودافع أخرى القوم ضربا خرادلا ... ورمى نبال مثل وكع الأساود

And he repelled the last of the people with blows like quails... and shot arrows like the sting of snakes.

وكعت الدجاجة وكعا: خضعت لسفاد الديك

The hen submitted with a 'waka': she submitted to the rooster's mating.

وكع البعير: سقط، زاد غيره: وجعا

The camel fell with a 'waka': it fell, others added: from pain.

خرق إذا وكع المطي من الوجى ... لم يطو دون رفيقه ذا المزود

A strong one, if the mounts fall from pain... he does not stop before his companion with the provisions.

وقال ابن عباد: وكع فلانا بالأمر وكعا: بكته

And Ibn Abbad said: He reproached so-and-so with the matter with a 'waka': he blamed him.

He nudged the ewe with a 'waka': he stimulated its udder during milking.

يقال: بات الفصيل يكع أمه الليلة

It is said: The calf spent the night nudging its mother.

لأنتم بوكع الضأن أعلم منكم ... بقرع الكماة حيث تبغى الجرائم

You are more knowledgeable about nudging the sheep than you are about... striking truffles where the crimes are sought.

وقالت النعجة: احلب وكع، فليس لك ما تدع

And the ewe said: Milk and nudge, for there is nothing you leave behind.

الوكع، محركة: إقبال الإبهام على السبابة من الرجل حتى يرى أصله

Al-wuk', with harakah: the thumb turning towards the index finger of the foot until its base is seen.

وهو أوكع وهي وكعاء

And he is 'awka'' and she is 'waka'ah'.

الوكع: ميل الأصابع قيل السبابة، حتى يصير كالعقفة خلقة أو عرضا

Al-wuk': the bending of the fingers towards the index finger, until it becomes like a hook, by creation or by accident.

الوكعاء: الأمة الحمقاء الطويلة

وقيل: هي الوجعاء، أي التي تسقط وجعا

And it is said: she is the one who falls ill, meaning she who falls down from pain.

استوكعت معدته: اشتدت وقويت

His stomach became 'istawka'a': it became strong and firm.

The waterskin became 'istawka'a': it became firm and its seams sealed after it drank.

والميكعة، بالكسر: سكة الحراثة التي يسوى بها خدد الأرض المكروبة

And al-mika'ah, with kasr: the plowshare with which the furrows of ploughed land are leveled.

At Al-Mika'ayn, and for speech there are opportunities.

واكع الديك الدجاجة، مواكعة ووكاعا: سفدها

The rooster mated with the hen, with 'muwaka'ah' and 'waka'an': he covered her.

والأوكع: الطويل الأحمق

And 'al-awka'': the tall, foolish one.

وهي وكعاء

And she is 'waka'ah'.

أسمن القوم وأوكعوا: إذا سمنت إبلهم وغلظت من الشحم، واشتدت

The people became fat and 'awka'oo': when their camels became fat and thick from fat, and strong.

أوكع زيد: قل خيره

'Awka'a Zayd: his good diminished.

أوكع الرجل: جاء بأمر شديد

The man 'awka'a': he brought a severe matter.

أوكع الأمر إيكاعا: وثق وتشدد

The matter became 'awka'a' with 'iika'an': it became firm and intense.

واتكع الشيء كافتعل: اشتد

And the thing became 'ittaka'a' like 'ifta'ala': it became strong.

مخملة قراطفا قد اتكع بها مقرات الثميلات النقع

A soft, fine garment that has become strong with it, the resting places of the thirsty ones.

وسقاء مستوكع: لم يسل منه شيء

And a 'mustawka'' waterskin: nothing leaked from it.

عبد أوكع: لئيم

An 'awka'' slave: mean.

أحصنوا أمهم من عبدهم ... تلك أفعال القزام الوكعه

They protected their mother from their slave... those are the actions of the mean dwarfs.

ورجل أوكع: يقول: لا إذا سئل

And a man is 'awka'': he says 'no' when asked.

ويقال: يعجبني وكاعة حمارك، أي: غلظه وشدته

And it is said: I like the 'waka'ah' of your donkey, meaning: its thickness and strength.

الوكيعة من الإبل: الشديدة المتينة

Al-waki'ah from the camels: the strong and sturdy one.

ومن الأسقية: ماقور ما ضعف من أديمه وألقي وخرز ما صلب منه وبقي

And from waterskins: the part where the hide was weak and discarded, and the strong part was stitched and remained.

أوكع السقاء: أحكمه

The waterskin was 'awka'a': it was made firm.

استوكع الرجل: اشتدت معدته

The man 'istawka'a': his stomach became strong.

واستوكعت الفراخ: غلظت وسمنت، كاستوكحت

And the chicks became 'istawka'at': they became thick and fat, like 'istawkaht'.

وأمر وكيع، مستحكم

And a 'waki'' matter, firm.

والميكع، بالكسر: الجوالق لأنه يحكم ويشد

And al-mika', with kasr: the sack, because it is firm and tight.

كما يجر الميكع

As the sack is dragged.

ويقال: ختن بعد ما استوكعت قلفته، أي: غلظت واشتدت

And it is said: he was circumcised after his foreskin became 'istawka'at', meaning: it became thick and strong.
