These beads are cast by the sea, and they are creatures from the depths of the sea, and when cast, they die.

اسمها مشتق من ودعته بمعنى تركته، لأن البحر ينضب عنها ويدعها

وهو أي الوداع: تخليف المسافر الناس خافضين وادعين

And 'al-wada'' is: the traveler leaving people in a state of ease and tranquility.

وهم يودعونه إذا سافر، تفاؤلا بالدعة التي يصير إليها إذا قفل

And they bid him farewell when he travels, as an omen of the ease he will return to when he comes back.

وهل تطيق وداعا أيها الرجل

And can you bear a farewell, O man?

التوديع يكون للحي وللميت

Farewelling occurs for the living and the dead.

فودع بالسلام أبا حريز وقل وداع أربد بالسلام

So bid farewell with peace to Abu Hurayz and say, 'Farewell, Arbadd, with peace'.

ولا يك موقف منك الوداعا

And let not your stance be one of farewell.

فإن كان أصله تخليف المسافر أهله وذويه وادعين، فإن العرب تضعه موضع التحية والسلام

Although its origin is the traveler leaving his family and kin in a state of peace, the Arabs use it in place of greeting and salutation.

ألا ترى أن لبيدا قال في أخيه وقد مات: فودع بالسلام أبا حريز

Do you not see that Labid said about his brother when he died: 'So bid farewell with peace to Abu Hurayz'?

وجائز أن يكون التوديع: تركه إياه في الخفض والدعة

And it is permissible for 'al-tawdi'' to mean: leaving him in ease and tranquility.

أي ما تركك منذ اختارك ولا أبغضك منذ أحبك

Meaning: He did not leave you since He chose you, nor did He hate you since He loved you.

غير مكفور ولا مودع ولا مستغنى عنه ربنا

Our Lord, not ungratefully received, nor abandoned, nor dispensed with.

وقيل: معناه: غير متروك الطاعة

And it was said: its meaning is: not abandoned in obedience.

فهو وديع ووادع، سكن واستقر وصار إلى الدعة

So he is 'wadī'' and 'wādi'', he became still, settled, and attained tranquility.

كاتدع تدعة بالضم وتدعة كهمزة

Like 'ittada'a' with 'tad'ah' (with damma) and 'tad'ah' (like 'humazah').

أي لم يتدع ولم يقر ولم يسكن

Meaning: he did not settle, nor did he remain, nor did he become still.

فمعنى لم يدع: لم يتدع ولم يثبت

So the meaning of 'lam yada'' is: he did not settle and he did not remain.

إلا مسحتا أو مجلف

Except a small amount or something uprooted.

أي: لم يترك من المال إلا شيئا مستأصلا هالكا، أو مجلف كذلك

Meaning: he did not leave from the wealth except something uprooted and destroyed, or similarly uprooted.

عليك بالمودوع، أي: السكينة والوقار

Adhere to 'al-mawdu'', meaning: tranquility and dignity.

وما المال والأهلون إلا وديعة

And wealth and family are but a deposit.

ولا بد يوما أن ترد الودائع

And inevitably, one day, the deposits must be returned.

لكم يا بني نهد ودائع الشرك، ووضائع المال

To you, O Banu Nahd, are the covenants of polytheism and the pledges of wealth.

إذا تعاهدا على ترك القتال

When they mutually pledge to cease fighting.

وكان اسم ذلك العهد وديعا

And the name of that covenant was 'wadī''.

ما لم يكن عهد ولا موعد

As long as there was no covenant or appointment.

فرس وديع، ومودوع، ومودع

A horse that is tranquil, left to rest, and left behind.

أقصر من قيده وأودعه حتى إذا السرب ريع أو فزعا

He shortened its tether and made it tranquil until the herd became startled or frightened.

It is the plural of 'mid'a'', and its origin is waw, because you 'wadada' your garment with it, meaning: you made it comfortable with it.

وشبه النقى مقترة في الموادع

And resembling purity, meager in the worn-out garments.

الثوب الذي تبتذله وتودع به ثياب الحقوق ليوم الحفل

The garment that you wear out and use to protect the garments of rights for the day of celebration.

وإنما يتخذ الميدع ليودع به المصون

And the 'mid'a'' is only made to protect the preserved item.

تودع ثياب صونه: إذا ابتذلها

She wears out her preserving garments: when she wears them out.

تودعه بخلقك هذا

Wear this worn-out garment of yours.

أي: البس هذا الذي دفعت إليك في أوقات الاحتفال والتزين

Meaning: Wear this which I gave you for times of celebration and adornment.

For wool is a protective covering for silk.

هذا مبذل المرأة، وميدعها، وميدعتها التي تودع بها ثيابها

ماله ميدع، أي: ماله من يكفيه العمل فيدعه، أي: يصونه عن العمل

وكلام ميدع، أي يحزن، لأنه يحتشم منه، ولا يستحسن

And speech that is 'mida'' means it saddens, because one feels shy of it and it is not approved.

If it has whiteness in its crop.

An 'awda'' bird: it has whiteness under its chin.

سميت لأن من سافر منها إلى مكة، شرفها الله تعالى، كان يودع ثم، أي هناك ويشيع إليها

It was named thus because whoever traveled from it to Mecca, may God ennoble it, would bid farewell there and be seen off towards it.

أن الوداع، واد بمكة، وثنية الوداع منسوبة إليه

That 'al-Wada'' is a valley in Mecca, and 'Thaniyat al-Wada'' is attributed to it.
