أنه صلى الله عليه وسلم زار قبر أمه في ألف مقنع
That he (peace be upon him) visited his mother's grave with a thousand 'muqannaʿ' (armored riders).
وتقنعت المرأة: لبست القناع
And 'taqannaʿat al-mar'ah': she wore the veil.
تقنع فلان، أي: تغشى بثوب
'Taqannaʿa fulān', meaning: he covered himself with a garment.
إذ ألبسوا وتقنعوا
When they were clothed and covered themselves.

رجل قنعاني، بالضم كقنعان: يرضى برأيه
A man 'qanaʿānī', with damma like 'qanaʿān': satisfied with his own opinion.

And by it the beggar is named 'qāniʿ', for his inclination towards people with his asking.

إذا القوم هشوا للفعال تقنعا
When the people are eager for action, they become content.
وقنعت إلى فلان، بكسر النون: خضعت له، والتزقت به، وانقطعت إليه
And 'qanaʿtu ilā fulān', with kasra on the noon: I submitted to him, clung to him, and relied on him.
والقانع: خادم القوم، وأجيرهم
And 'al-qāniʿ': the servant of the people, and their hired hand.
الرجل يكون مع الرجل يطلب فضله، ولا يطلب معروفه
A man who is with another man seeking his favor, but not his kindness.
أقنع الرجل بيديه في القنوت: مدهما، واسترحم ربه، مستقبلا ببطونهما وجهه، ليدعو
The man 'aqnaʿa' with his two hands in supplication: he extended them, seeking mercy from his Lord, facing Him with their palms, to pray.
وأقنع فلان الصبي فقبله، وذلك إذا وضع إحدى يديه على فأس قفاه، وجعل الأخرى تحت ذقنه وأماله إليه فقبله
And so-and-so 'aqnaʿa' the boy and kissed him, which is when he places one hand on the nape of his neck, and the other under his chin, and tilts him towards him to kiss him.
وحلقا تراه للثمالة مقنعا
And throats you see raised for the drink.
الإقناع: أن يقنع البعير رأسه إلى الحوض للشرب، وهو مد رأسه
'Al-iqnāʿ': a camel lowering its head to the trough to drink, which is extending its head.
أنه كان إذا ركع لم يشخص رأسه، ولم يقنعه
That when he would bow, he did not raise his head, nor lower it.
المقنع من الإبل، كمكرم: الذي يرفع رأسه خلقة
'Al-muqannaʿ' from camels, like 'mukram': one that naturally raises its head high.
وناقة مقنعة الضرع: التي أخلافها ترتفع إلى بطنها
And a camel with 'muqannaʿah' udder: whose teats are raised towards its belly.
وأقنعت الإناء في النهر: استقبلت به جريته ليمتلئ، أو أملته لتصب ما فيه
And 'aqnaʿta al-ināʾ fī al-nahr': you faced the current with the vessel to fill it, or tilted it to pour what is in it.
وقنعت رأس الجبل، وقنعته: إذا علوته
And 'qanaʿta raʾs al-jabal', and 'qanaʿtuhu': if you ascended it.
والقنعة: ما نتأ من رأس الإنسان
And 'al-qanaʿah': what protrudes from a person's head.
والقنع بالكسر: ما بقي من الماء في قرب الجبل
And 'al-qanaʿ' with kasra: what remains of water in a mountain cistern.
وأقنع الرجل صوته: رفعه، وهو مجاز
And 'aqnaʿa al-rajul ṣawtahu': he raised his voice, and this is metaphorical.
ألقى عن وجهه قناع الحياء، على المثل
He cast off the veil of modesty from his face, as the proverb goes.
وقنعه الشيب خماره: إذا علاه الشيب
And 'qanaʿahu al-shaybu khimārahū': when gray hair covered it.
وقنعه الشيب منخ خمارا
And gray hair covered him like a veil.
حتى اكتسى الرأس قناعا أشهبا
Until the head was covered with a whitish veil.
إذا طلعت الذراع، حسرت الشمس القناع، وأشعلت في الأفق الشعاع، وترقرق السراب بكل قاع
When the star 'al-dhirāʿ' rises, the sun removes its veil, and ignites the horizon with rays, and the mirage shimmers in every valley.
والمقنع، كمعظم: المغطى رأسه
And 'al-muqannaʿ', like 'muʿaẓẓam': one whose head is covered.
في كل يوم هامتي مقرعة قانعة ولم تكن مقنعه
Every day my head is struck, content, and not covered.
والقنعان بالكسر: العظيم من الوعول
And 'al-qanʿān' with kasra: the large male mountain goat.
ودمع مقنع، كمعظم: محبوس في الجوف، أو مغطى في شؤونه، كامن فيها، وهو مجاز
And 'damʿun muqannaʿ', like 'muʿaẓẓam': trapped inside, or hidden in its ducts, latent within, and this is metaphorical.

And 'al-qunaʿah' with damma: the small opening in the wall.
والقنع بالضم القناعة عامية، والقياس التحريك، أو يكون مخففا عن القنوع
And 'al-qanaʿ' with damma is colloquial for 'al-qanāʿah', the standard is with haraka, or it is a lightened form of 'al-qunūʿ'.
وأقنعت الغنم لمأواها: رجعت، وأقنعتها أنا، لازم متعد
And 'aqnaʿat al-ghanam li-maʾwāhā': the sheep returned to their shelter, and 'aqnaʿtuhā anā': I made them return, intransitive and transitive.
سألت فلانا عن كذا، فلم يأت بمقنع، كمقعد، أي: بما يرضي، وجواب مقنع كذلك
I asked so-and-so about such-and-such, and he did not provide a 'miqnaʿ', like 'miqʿad', meaning: something satisfactory, and the answer was likewise satisfactory.
ويقال قنعه خزية وعارا، وتقنع منها، وهو مجاز
And it is said 'qanaʿahu khizyah wa ʿāran', and 'taqannaʿa minhā', and this is metaphorical.
ولبست، ولا من خزية أتقنع
And I wore, and I do not cover myself with shame.
وتقنعوا في الحديد، وهو مجاز أيضا
And they covered themselves in iron (armor), and this is also metaphorical.
سيعلم ما يغني حكيم ومقنع إذا الحرب لم يرجع بصلح سفيرها
He will know what Hakim and Muqannaʿ avail when war does not return with the peace of its envoy.
وكان مقنعا الدهر
And he was 'muqannaʿ' (veiled/covered) throughout time.
أفق إنما البدر المقنع رأسه ضلال وغي، مثل بدر المقنع
O horizon, indeed the moon whose head is veiled is misguidance and error, like the veiled moon.
فقيل له: المقنعي، حدث أبوه عن الهجيمي
And he was told: 'Al-Muqannaʿī', his father narrated from Al-Hujaymī.
ونسبة إلى عمل المقانع، وضبطه السمعاني بكسر الميم
And a nisba to the making of veils, and Al-Samʿānī pronounced it with kasra on the mim.
