Al-qunūʿ, with dammah, is begging, and it is said: humiliation in asking.
إن القنوع قد يكون بمعنى الرضا أي: بالقسم واليسير من العطاء
Indeed, al-qunūʿ can mean contentment, meaning: with one's lot and a little of what is given.
وأنشد: (أنرضى بهذا منكم ليس غيره ... ويقنعنا ما ليس فيه قنوع)
And he recited: (Do we accept this from you and nothing else? ... And what has no contentment satisfies us.)
ومن دعائهم: نسأل الله القناعة، ونعوذ به من القنوع
And from their supplications: We ask God for contentment, and we seek refuge in Him from begging.
وفي المثل: خير الغنى القنوع، وشر الفقر الخضوع
And in the proverb: The best of wealth is contentment, and the worst of poverty is subservience.
وفي التنزيل العزيز: وأطعموا القانع والمعتر
And in the Noble Qur'an: And feed the beggar and the one who comes begging.
فالقانع: الذي يسأل، والمعتر: الذي يتعرض ولا يسأل
So the beggar is: the one who asks, and the one who comes begging is: the one who approaches without asking.
وفي الحديث: القناعة كنز لا يفنى
And in the Hadith: Contentment is an unfailing treasure.
لأن الإنفاق منها لا ينقطع كلما تعذر عليه شيء من أمور) الدنيا قنع بما دونه، ورضي
Because spending from it does not cease; whenever something of the affairs of this world becomes difficult for him, he is content with less than it and is pleased.
وفي حديث آخر: عز من قنع، وذل من طمع
And in another Hadith: He who is content is honored, and he who is greedy is humiliated.
وشاهد مقنع، كمقعد، أي عدل يقنع به
And the witness for 'maqnaʿ' (like 'maqʿad') is: a peer with which one is satisfied.
ورجل قنعان، بالضم وامرأة قنعان، ويستوي في الأخيرة المذكر والمؤنث، والواحد والجمع، أي رضا يقنع به وبرأيه، أو بحكمه وقضائه، أو بشهادته.
And a man is qanʿān (with dammah), and a woman is qanʿān, and the latter is the same for masculine and feminine, singular and plural, meaning: satisfaction with which one is content, and with his opinion, or his judgment and decree, or his testimony.
قنعت الإبل والغنم كسمع: مالت للمرتع، وكـمنع: مالت لمأواها، وأقبلت نحو أهلها
Camels and sheep 'qanaʿat' (like samʿa): inclined towards the pasture, and 'qanaʿat' (like manaʿa): inclined towards their home, and approached their people.
وأقنعت لمأواها.
And they 'aqnaʿat' towards their home.
وقنع الإداوة أو المزادة قنعا، بالفتح: خنث رأسها لجوفها، فهي مقنوعة، وكذلك قمعها، فهي مقموعة، وقد تقدم.
And he 'qanaʿa' the waterskin or the large waterskin, 'qanaʿan' (with fatha): bent its head inwards, so it is 'maqnūʿah', and likewise 'qamaʿah', so it is 'maqmūʿah', and this has preceded.
وقنعت الشاة: ارتفع ضرعها، وليس في ضرعها تصوب، ويقال أيضا: قنعت بضرعها، كأقنعت فهي مقنعة، واستقنعت، وفي الحديث: ناقة مقنعة الضرع، التي أخلافها ترتفع إلى بطنها.
And the ewe 'qanaʿat': her udder rose, and there was no downward inclination in her udder, and it is also said: she 'qanaʿat' with her udder, as if she 'aqnaʿat', so she is 'muqannaʿah', and 'istaqnaʿat', and in the Hadith: a camel with a 'muqannaʿah' udder, whose teats rise towards her belly.
والمقنع والمقنعة، بكسر ميمهما، الأولى عن اللحياني: ما تقنع به المرأة رأسها ومحاسنها، أي تغطي
And al-miqnaʿ and al-miqnaʿah, with kasrah on their mim, the first from Al-Laythiyānī: what a woman uses to cover her head and her beauty, meaning to cover.

And in the Hadith of Aisha, may God be pleased with her: We used to be gifted a platter with a piece of fat in it, and we would rejoice in it.
ومن المجاز القناع: غشاء القلب، قال الأصمعي: هو الجلدة التي تلبس القلب، فإذا انخلعت مات صاحبه
And from the figurative speech: al-qināʿ: the membrane of the heart, Al-Aṣmaʿī said: it is the skin that covers the heart, and when it detaches, its owner dies.
ومن المجاز القناع: السلاح يقال أخذ قناعه، أي: سلاحه
And from the figurative speech: al-qināʿ: weapons, it is said 'he took his qināʿ', meaning: his weapon.
والنعجة تسمى قناع، ممنوعة من الصرف، كما تسمى خمار وليس هذا بوصف، نقله الصاغاني.
And the ewe is called qināʿ, diptote, just as it is called khimār, and this is not an adjective, as reported by Al-Ṣāghānī.

And he 'aqnaʿa' his head: he straightened it, and likewise his neck, or straightened it without turning right or left, and made its tip parallel to what was in front of him.

And in the Noble Qur'an: Hastening, their heads raised, meaning: raising their heads, looking in humility.
والمقنع: الرافع رأسه في السماء، قال رؤبة يصف ثور وحش: أشرف روقاه صليفا مقنعا
And al-miqnaʿ: the one who raises his head to the sky, Ruʾbah said describing a wild bull: its two horns rose, a raised neck.
وأقنع الراعي الإبل والغنم: أمرها، وفي الصحاح أمالها للمرتع، وكذا لمأواها.
And the shepherd 'aqnaʿa' the camels and sheep: he directed them, and in Al-Ṣiḥāḥ: he inclined them towards the pasture, and likewise towards their home.
وأقنع فلانا: أحوجه، وسأل أعرابي قوما، فلم يعطوه، فقال: الحمد لله الذي أقنعني إليكم، أي: أحوجني إلى أن أقنع إليكم، وهو ضد.
And 'aqnaʿa' someone: made him needy, and a Bedouin asked people, and they did not give him, so he said: Praise be to God who made me needy of you, meaning: He made me need to approach you, and it is the opposite.
ويقال فم مقنع، كمكرم: أسنانه معطوفة إلى داخل، يقال رجل مقنع الفم، قال الأصمعي: وذلك القوي الذي يقطع له كل شيء
And a mouth is called 'miqnaʿ' (like 'mukram'): its teeth are turned inwards, it is said a man with a 'miqnaʿ' mouth, Al-Aṣmaʿī said: and that is the strong one for whom everything is cut.

(They graze on thorny trees with mouths whose molars are like the striking falcons.)
