Ibn al-Mubarak said: 'Al-qash'' is the mat itself, or a piece of worn-out mat.

لا أعرفن أحدكم يحمل قشعا من أدم، فينادي يا محمد

Let me not find one of you carrying a piece of leather, and calling out, 'O Muhammad!'

فأقول: لاأملك لك من الله شيئا، قد بلغت يعني نطعا، أو قطعة من أديم

And I will say: I cannot avail you anything against Allah; I have delivered the message, meaning a mat, or a piece of leather.

والقشع الذي في بيت متمم السابق هو الرجل المنقشع لحمه عنه كبرا

And 'al-qash'' in the previous verse of Mutammim refers to a man whose flesh has receded from him due to old age.

وقشع القوم، كمنع: فرقهم، فأقشعوا: تفرقوا

And 'qaša'a' al-qawm, like 'mana'a', means to scatter them, so 'aqša'ū': they dispersed.

وقشعت الريح السحاب، أي كشفته
