Al-ṣintʿ, like qunfudh, he wrote it in red, considering it an addition to Al-Jawhari, but it is not so; rather, he mentioned it under ṣaʿṭaʿ, as the 'n' is superfluous for him.
فالصواب إذن كتبه بالأسود، وهو: النعام الصلب الرأس
So the correct way is to write it in black, and it is: the hard-headed ostrich.
وأنشد للطرماح، يشبه ناقته بعير الفلاة: (صنتع الحاجبين خرطه البق ... ل بديا قبل استكاك الرياض)
And he cited Al-Tirimmāḥ, likening his she-camel to a desert camel: (Hard-browed, the flies gnawed it... appearing before the plains were firm).
قال ابن بري: الصنتع في البيت من صفة العير لا النعام
Ibn Barrī said: Al-ṣintʿ in the verse describes the male camel, not the ostrich.
وكذا الصنتع: الحمار الشديد الرأس، ويطلق غالبا على الحمار الوحشي
And likewise, al-ṣintʿ: the strong-headed donkey, and it is often applied to the wild donkey.
أو هو الحمار الناتئ الوجنتين والحاجبين، العظيم الجبهة.
Or it is a donkey with prominent cheeks and eyebrows, and a broad forehead.
أو الصنتع: الرقيق الخد، ضد، وبه فسر قول أبي دواد الإيادي يصف فرسا: (فلقد أغتدي يدافع رأيي ... صنتع الخد أيد القصرات)
Or al-ṣintʿ: thin-cheeked, the opposite. And with this, he explained the saying of Abū Dawūd Al-Iyādī describing a horse: (I indeed go forth, my opinion defending... thin-cheeked, with long hindquarters).
كما في العباب، فهو ضد، والذي في اللسان: صنتع الخلق أيد القصرات
As in Al-ʿAbbāb, so it is an opposite. And what is in Al-Lisān: 'ṣantʿ al-khalq ayd al-qaṣarāt' (strong of creation, long hindquarters).
وقال أبو موسى الحامض: (ناهبتها القوم على صنتع ... أجرد كالقدح من الساسم)
And Abū Mūsā Al-Ḥāmiḍ said: (The people vied for it with me over a strong [mount]... lean like a cup from the Sāsim [tree]).
والذي رواه صاحب اللسان أحسن من رواية الصاغاني، وبه ترتفع الضدية، فتأمل.
And what the author of Al-Lisān narrated is better than the narration of Al-Ṣāghānī, and with it the contradiction is resolved, so ponder.
الصنتع: المحرف، كالمصنتع، كلاهما عن ابن عباد.
Al-ṣintʿ: the crooked, like al-maṣntaʿ, both from Ibn ʿAbbād.
ومما يستدرك عليه: الصنتع: الشاب الشديد.
