It is that which has black and white in it, by which eyes are resembled.

It is called 'jaza'' because it is 'mujaza'', meaning segmented with different colors, i.e., its black is cut by its white and yellow.

And wearing it as a ring is not good, for it causes worry, sadness, and frightening dreams.

وجزع الوادي، بالكسر، كما في الصحاح والعباب واللسان، وقال أبو عبيدة: اللائق به أن يكون مفتوحا، وهو منعطف الوادي

And 'jaz' al-wadi', with a kasra, as in Al-Sihah, Al-Abab, and Al-Lisan. Abu Ubaidah said: it is appropriate for it to be with a fatha, and it is the bend of the valley.

And he became distressed, and this is from Ibn Abbad, like 'faraha', with 'jaz'an' and 'juzuu'an', with a damma, so he is 'jazia'' and 'jaza''.

وإن جزعنا فإن الشر أجزعنا ... وإن جسرنا فإنا معشر جسر

If we become distressed, then evil makes us distressed; and if we become bold, then we are a bold people.

Meaning, he said to him what would console him and remove his distress, which is sadness and fear.

ونوى مجزع، بالفتح، ويكسر، وهو الذي حك بعضه حتى أبيض، وترك الباقي على لونه، تشبيها بالجزع

And a date pit 'mujaza'', with a fatha, and with a kasra, which is that some of it is rubbed until it becomes white, and the rest is left in its color, resembling 'al-jaza''.
