The 'taba'at' (plural of 'taba'ah'): are the things that contain sin by which one is followed.
إنا كنا لكم تبعا
Indeed, we were followers to you.
وهو من: تبعت الرجل بحقي.
And it is from: 'tabi'tu al-rajula bi-haqqi' (I pursued the man for my right).
التبع، محركة: التابع يكون واحدا وجمعا
Al-taba', with harakah: is the follower, being singular and plural.
وج: أتباع.
And its plural is: 'atba''.
والتبع أيضا: قوائم الدابة
And 'al-taba'' also: are the legs of the beast.
فتواليها بطيئات التبع
And their following are the slow 'taba'' (legs).
والتبع، بضمتين مشددة الباء، وكذلك التبع، كسكر: الظل
And 'al-taba'' (with two dammah and a shaddah on the ba'), and likewise 'al-taba'' (like 'sukkar'): is the shadow.
يرد المياه نفيضة وحضيرة ... ورد القطاة إذا اسمأل التبع
He returns to the watering holes, splashing and gathering... and the sandgrouse returns when the 'taba'' (shadow) lengthens.
ألم تر إلى ربك كيف مد الظل والظل هو الليل في كلام العرب.
Have you not seen how your Lord extended the shadow? And the shadow is the night in the speech of the Arabs.
والتابع والتابعة: الجني والجنية يكونان مع الإنسان يتبعانه حيث ذهب.
And 'al-tabi'' and 'al-tabi'ah': are the male jinn and the female jinn who are with a person, following him wherever he goes.
أول خبر قدم المدينة امرأة لها تابع، فجاء في صورة طائر حتى وقع، فقالت: انزل
The first news that came to Medina was about a woman who had a 'tabi'' (jinn), who came in the form of a bird until he landed, and she said: 'Descend'.
والتابع هنا: جني يتبع المرأة يحبها.
And 'al-tabi'' here: is a jinn that follows the woman whom he loves.
والتابعة: تتبع الرجل تحبه.
And 'al-tabi'ah': is a female jinn that follows a man whom she loves.
وقيل: التابعة: الرئي من الجن، وإنما ألحقوا الهاء للمبالغة، أو لتشنيع الأمر، أو على إرادة الداهية، والجمع: التوابع، وهن القرناء.
And it is said: 'al-tabi'ah': is the one seen from the jinn, and they attached the 'ha' for exaggeration, or to emphasize the matter, or with the intention of a calamity. And the plural is: 'al-tawabi'', and they are the companions ( القرناء).
تابع النجم: اسم الدبران، وسمي به تفاؤلا وفي العباب: تطيرا من لفظه
The star 'al-tabi'': is the name of Aldebaran, and it was named so for good omen, and in 'al-'Abab': as an omen from its word.
كأن التابع المسكين فيها ... أجير في حدايات الوقير
As if the poor 'tabi'' (Aldebaran) in it... is a hired hand in the guiding stars of al-Waqir.
ويسمى الدبران أيضا تبعا، كسكر، قاله أبو سعيد الضرير: وبه فسر بيت سعدى الجهنية، وقال: إنما سمى به لإتباعه الثريا.
And Aldebaran is also called 'taba'', like 'sukkar', said Abu Sa'id al-Darir: and with this he explained the verse of Sa'da al-Juhaniyyah, saying: it was named so because it follows the Pleiades.
والتبيع: الناصر تقول: وجدت على فلان تبيعا، أي نصيرا متابعا.
And 'al-tabi'': is the supporter. You say: 'wajadtu 'ala fulan tabi'an', meaning a supporting helper.
والتبيع: الذي لك عليه مال وتتابعه، أي تطالبه به.
And 'al-tabi'': is the one who owes you money and you pursue him, meaning you demand it from him.
ثم لا تجدوا لكم علينا تبيعا
Then you will not find for yourselves any 'tabi'' (pursuer) against us.
أي لا تجدوا من يتبعنا بإنكار ما نزل بكم، ولا يتبعنا بأن يصرفه عنكم، وقيل: تبيعا: مطالبا.
Meaning: you will not find anyone who follows us to deny what has befallen you, nor anyone who follows us to turn it away from you. And it is said: 'tabi'an': a claimant.
والتبيع: ولد البقرة في الأولى، ثم جذع، ثم ثني، ثم رباع، ثم سديس، ثم سالغ، قاله أبو فقعس الأسدي، وهي بهاء.
And 'al-tabi'': is the calf of a cow in its first year, then a yearling, then a two-year-old, then a three-year-old, then a four-year-old, then a five-year-old, then a six-year-old, said Abu Fuq'as al-Asadi, and it is feminine.
والتبيع: العجل المدرك لأنه يتبع أمه بعد.
And 'al-tabi'': is the mature calf because it follows its mother afterwards.
التبيع من البقر يسمى تبيعا حين يستكمل الحول، ولا يسمى تبيعا قبل ذلك، فإذا استكمل عامين فهو جذع.
The 'tabi'' from cattle is called 'tabi'' when it completes the year, and it is not called 'tabi'' before that. When it completes two years, it is a 'jadh' (yearling).
والتبيع: الذي استوى قرناه وأذناه.
And 'al-tabi'': is the one whose horns and ears have become even.
والتبابعة، هكذا بباءين موحدتين: ملوك اليمن، ويوجد في بعض النسخ: التتابعة، بتاءين فوقيتين، وهو غلط، الواحد تبع، كسكر، سموا بذلك لأنه يتبع بعضهم بعضا
And 'al-tababi'ah', thus with two unified 'ba's': are the kings of Yemen. And in some copies, it is found as 'al-tatabi'ah', with two upper 'ta's', which is a mistake. The singular is 'taba'', like 'sukkar'. They were named so because one followed another.

Are they better or the people of Tubba'?
لا تسبوا تبعا فإنه أول من كسا الكعبة وقيل: اسمه أسعد أبو كرب.
Do not curse Tubba', for he was the first to clothe the Kaaba. And it is said: his name was As'ad Abu Karb.
والتبابعة في حمير، كالأكاسرة في الفرس، والقياصرة في الروم، ولا يسمى به إلا إذا كانت، هكذا في النسخ، ونص العين: دانت له حمير وحضرموت، وزاد غيره: وسبأ، وإذا لم تدن له هاتان لم يسم تبعا.
And 'al-tababi'ah' in Himyar, like 'al-kasarirah' among the Persians and 'al-qayasirah' among the Romans. And one is not called so unless they ruled, as is in the copies. The text of 'al-'Ayn' states: Himyar and Hadramawt submitted to him. Others added: and Saba'. And if these two did not submit to him, he was not called 'Taba''.
ومن المجاز: التبع: ضرب من اليعاسيب أعظمها وأحسنها، ج: التبابيع نقله الليث
And from metaphor: 'al-taba'': a type of wasp, the largest and most beautiful of them. Plural: 'al-tababi'', narrated by al-Layth.
ويقال من ذلك: تبعت النحل تبعها، أي يعسوبها الأعظم، تشبيها بأولئك الملوك
And from this it is said: 'tabi'tu al-nahl tabi'aha', meaning its greatest wasp, by analogy with those kings.

تبوع الشمس، كتنور: ريح يقال لها: النكيباء تهب الغداة مع طلوعها من نحو الصبا لا نشء معها فتدور في مهاب الرياح حتى تعود إلى مهب الصبا حيث بدأت بالغداة.
'Tabu' al-shams', like 'tanur': is a wind called 'al-Nakibaa'', which blows at dawn with sunrise from the east, with no substance, and it circles in the wind currents until it returns to the east where it began at dawn.
والعرب تكرهها.
And the Arabs dislike it.
تبع المرأة، بالكسر: عاشقها وتابعها حيث ذهبت.
'Taba' al-mar'ah', with kasr: is her lover and follower wherever she went.
هو تبع نساء، وهي تبعته.
He is a 'taba'' of women, and she is his 'tabi'ah'.
تبع نساء، أي يتتبعهن، وحدث نساء: يحادثهن، وزير نساء: يزورهن، وخلب نساء: إذا كان يخالبهن.
'Taba' nisaa'', meaning he follows them. And 'hadatha nisaa'': he talks to them. And 'wazara nisaa'': he visits them. And 'khalaba nisaa'': if he deceives them.
بقرة تبعى، كسكرى، أي مستحرمة.
A cow 'tab'aa', like 'sukra', meaning aroused.
أتبعتهم مثل تبعتهم، وذلك إذا كانوا سبقوك فلحقتهم
I 'atba'tuhum' like 'tabi'tuhum', and that is if they preceded you and you caught up with them.
ويقال: أتبعه: إذا قفاه وتطلبه متتبعا له
And it is said: 'atba'ahu': if you follow him and seek him out, tracking him.
فأتبعهم فرعون بجنوده أراد أتبعهم إياهم.
So Pharaoh followed them with his soldiers. It means he followed them.
أي لحقهم أو كاد، ومنه قوله تعالى: فأتبعه الشيطان أي لحقه.
Meaning: he caught up with them or almost did. And from this is His saying: 'Fa-atba'ahu al-shaytan' (So Satan followed him), meaning he caught up with him.
يقال: تبعه وأتبعه، ولحقه وألحقه
It is said: 'tabi'ahu' and 'atba'ahu', and 'lahiqahu' and 'alhaqahu'.
فأتبعه شهاب مبين
Then a clear flame followed him.
فأتبع سببا وفاتبع سببا بتشديد التاء، ومعناها تبع
'Fa-atba'a sababan' and 'fa-ittaba'a sababan' with a shaddah on the 'ta'', and its meaning is 'tabi'a'.
أتبع الفرس لجامها، أو أتبع الناقة زمامها، أو أتبع الدلو رشاءها كل ذلك يضرب للأمر باستكمال المعروف واستتمامه
To 'utbi'' the horse its bridle, or to 'utbi'' the camel its rope, or to 'utbi'' the bucket its rope. All of this is used for completing a favor and perfecting it.
إنك قد جدت بالفرس، واللجام أيسر خطبا، فأتم الحاجة، لما أن الفرس لا غنى به عن اللجام.
You have been generous with the horse, and the bridle is easier to handle, so complete the need, since the horse cannot do without the bridle.
فتبعه عمرو فلحقه قبل أن يصل إلى أرضه
So Amr followed him and caught up with him before he reached his land.
