And between it and Mecca is three nights, and the market of the Arabs was held there.
وقيل عكاظ: ماء بين نخلة والطائف إلى بلد يقال له: العتق، كانت موسما من مواسم الجاهلية، تقوم هلال ذي القعدة، وتستمر عشرين يوما.
And it was said 'Ukaẓ: a water source between Nakhla and Ta'if, towards a land called Al-'Atq, which was a season of the Jahiliyyah, starting on the first of Dhu al-Qi'dah and lasting twenty days.
وكانت تجتمع فيها قبائل العرب، فيتعاكظون، أي يتفاخرون ويتناشدون ما أحدثوا من الشعر ثم يتفرقون.
And the tribes of Arabia would gather there, and they would boast to each other, meaning they would compete in boasting and recite what new poetry they had composed, then they would disperse.
كانت فيها وقائع وحروب.
There were battles and wars in it.
فيقيمون شهرا يتبايعون ويتفاخرون، ويتناشدون شعرا، فلما جاء الإسلام هدم ذلك.
They would stay for a month, buying and selling, boasting, and reciting poetry, and when Islam came, that was abolished.
إذا بني القباب على عكاظ ... وقام البيع واجتمع الألوف
When tents are pitched at 'Ukaẓ... and the trade begins and thousands gather.
ألا من مبلغ حسان عني ... مغلغلة تدب إلى عكاظ
Is there anyone who will convey to Hassan from me... a message, crawling towards 'Ukaẓ.
سأنشر إن بقيت لكم كلاما ... ينشر في المجنة مع عكاظ

أو كلما وردت عكاظ قبيلة ... بعثوا إلي عريفهم يتوسم
Or whenever a tribe arrives at 'Ukaẓ... they send their scout to observe.
وتعكظ أمره: التوى، عن ابن الأعرابي، كما سيأتي بيانه.
And his matter became difficult: it twisted, according to Ibn Al-A'rabi, as will be explained.
وقيل: تعكظ عليه أمره، أي تعسر وتشدد، وتمنع.
And it was said: His matter became difficult for him, meaning it became hard, severe, and obstructed.
ولكن قومي أطاعوا الغوا ... ة حتى تعكظ أهل الدم
But my people obeyed the misguided... until the people of blood became obstructed.
تعكظ: تمنع.
'Takaẓa': to be restrained.
وتنكظ: تعجل، كما في اللسان والعباب والتكملة.
And 'tanakẓa': to hasten, as in Al-Lisān, Al-'Ubbāb, and Al-Takmilah.
وتعكظ القوم: تحبسوا ينظرون في أمورهم، قيل: ومنه سميت عكاظ.
And the people 'ta'akẓū': they were held back, considering their affairs. It was said: And from this 'Ukaẓ was named.
عكظه عن حاجته ونكظه تعكيظا وتنكيظا، إذا صرفه عنها.
He restrained him from his need and hindered him, 'ta'kīẓan' and 'tankīẓan', if he turned him away from it.
وعكظ عليه حاجته ونكظ، أي نكدها.
And he made his need difficult for him and hindered it, meaning he made it troublesome.
