And some explained it, saying: because she ('the ewe') 'tafṭiṭ' (passes wind), meaning farts, and Al-nāfiṭah: the she-goat, because she makes a sound with her nose. He said: And from this is their saying: 'He has neither an 'āfiṭah nor a nāfiṭah', and this is like their saying: 'He has neither a bleating nor a mooing one', meaning a sheep that bleats and a camel that moos, as in Al-Ṣiḥāḥ.

وقيل: النافطة إتباع، وقيل: النافطة: العنز أو الناقة.

And it was said: Al-nāfiṭah is an echo word. And it was said: Al-nāfiṭah: the she-goat or the she-camel.

وقال الأصمعي: العافطة: الضائنة والنافطة: الماعزة، وقال غير الأصمعي من الأعراب: العافطة: الماعزة إذا عطست.

And Al-Aṣma'ī said: Al-'āfiṭah: the fat-tailed sheep, and Al-nāfiṭah: the she-goat. And others from the Bedouins, other than Al-Aṣma'ī, said: Al-'āfiṭah: the she-goat when it sneezes.

Or Al-'āfiṭah: the female slave who tends to livestock, like Al-'afāṭah, as in Al-Ṣiḥāḥ, because she speaks unclearly in her speech, and Al-nāfiṭah: the sheep.

And Ibn Fāris said: Al-'afṭ: calling the sheep. And he called his sheep, if he called them.

وقيل: العافط: الذي يصيح بالضأن لتأتيه.

And it was said: Al-'āfiṭ: the one who calls out to the sheep to come to him.

والمعفطة: الاست.

And Al-mi'faṭah: the anus.

والأعفط: الأحمق.

And Al-a'faṭ: the foolish.

وعفط الراعي بغنمه، إذا زجرها بصوت يشبه عفطها، كما في الصحاح.

And the shepherd called his sheep, if he drove them away with a sound resembling their 'afṭ', as in Al-Ṣiḥāḥ.

والعافط: الراعي.

ومن سبهم: يا ابن العافطة، أي الراعية.
