وهو أحد من السيف، وأدق من الشعر

It is sharper than a sword, and finer than a hair.

يمر عليه الخلائق فيجوزه أهل الجنة بأعمالهم

All creatures will pass over it, and the people of Paradise will cross it by their deeds.

يمر بعضهم كالبرق الخاطف، وبعضهم كالريح المرسلة، وبعضهم كجياد الخيل، وبعضهم يشتد، وبعضهم يمشي، وبعضهم يزحف

Some will pass like a lightning flash, some like a sent wind, some like fine horses, some will hasten, some will walk, and some will crawl.

وينادي مناد من بطنان العرش: غضوا أبصاركم حتى تجوز فاطمة بنت محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم ورضي الله عنها.

And an announcer will call from the depths of the Throne: Lower your gazes until Fatima, daughter of Muhammad, peace be upon him and may Allah be pleased with her, passes.

وتقول النار للمؤمن: جز يا مؤمن فقد أطفأ نورك لهبي

And the Fire will say to the believer: Pass on, O believer, for your light has extinguished my flame.

وتزل وتدحض عند ذلك أقدام أهل النار

And at that time, the feet of the people of the Fire will slip and stumble.

أجازنا الله تعالى على الصراط إجازته من اصطفاه من أوليائه

May Allah the Almighty grant us passage over the bridge, the passage He granted to those He chose from His allies.

ورزقنا شفاعة رسله وأنبيائه.

And grant us the intercession of His messengers and prophets.

وقال ابن عباد: الصراط، بالضم: السيف الطويل.

And Ibn 'Abbad said: Al-sirat, with a damma: the long sword.

والسين لغة في الكل، وقد تقدم أن يعقوب قرأ: اهدنا السرط المستقيم

And the 'seen' is a variant pronunciation for all of them, and it has been mentioned that Ya'qub recited: Guide us to the straight path.

وأن أصل صاده سين، فقلبت مع الطاء صادا لقرب مخارجهما.

And that the origin of its 'sad' is 'seen', and it was changed to 'sad' with the 'ta' due to the proximity of their articulation points.
