شوط براح: ابن آوى، نقله الجوهري والزمخشري، وهو في العباب عن ابن دريد وقال: فأما قولهم: آوي فخطأ.
Shawt barah: jackal, narrated by Al-Jawhari and Al-Zamakhshari, and it is in Al-Abab from Ibn Duraid, who said: As for their saying: 'awi, it is a mistake.
وفلان شوطه شوط باطل، وهو الهباء الذي يدخل من الكوة إلى البيت في الشمس، أي ليس بشيء، نقله الزمخشري والجوهري.
And so-and-so's course is a void course, which is the dust that enters from the window into the house in the sun, meaning it is nothing, narrated by Al-Zamakhshari and Al-Jawhari.
وقد شاط يشوط، إذا عدا شوطا إلى غاية
And he ran a course, if he ran a course to a goal
ويقال: عدا شوطا، أي طلقا، كما في الصحاح، ج: أشواط
And it is said: he ran a course, meaning a stride, as in Sahah, pl: ashwat
والضغن من تتابع الأشواط
And the grudge from the succession of courses
ويقال: طاف بالبيت سبعة أشواط، من الحجر إلى الحجر شوط واحد، كما في الصحاح، وهو في الأصل مسافة من الأرض يعدوها الفرس، كالميدان ونحوه.
And it is said: he circumambulated the Kaaba seven times, from the Stone to the Stone is one course, as in Sahah, and it is originally a distance of land that a horse covers, like a field or similar.
وكان يقول: الشوط باطل، والطواف بالبيت من الباقيات الصالحات.
And he used to say: The course is void, and circumambulating the House is from the good deeds that endure.
فإن أصل وضع الشوط في مضي في غير تثبت ولا في حق
For the origin of the word 'shawt' is in moving without firmness or right.
والشوط: حائط عند جبل أحد، من بساتين المدينة، وقد جاء ذكره في حديث المرأة الجونية.
And the shoot: a wall near Mount Uhud, from the gardens of Medina, and its mention came in the hadith of the Junaydiyyah woman.
ومن ثم انخزل عبد الله بن أبي بن سلول يوم أحد راجعا، قال قيس بن الخطيم الأنصاري: (وبالشوط من يثرب أعبد ... ستهلك في الخمر أثمانها)
And from there Abdullah bin Ubay bin Salul retreated on the day of Uhud, returning. Qais bin Al-Khatim Al-Ansari said: (And by the shoot from Yathrib I will serve... its price will be destroyed in wine)
والشوط: مكان بين شرفين من الأرض يأخذ فيه الماء والناس، كأنه طريق طوله مقدار الدعوة، أي مبلغ صوت داع ثم ينقطع
And the shoot: a place between two elevated points of land where water and people gather, as if it were a path the length of a call, meaning the extent of a caller's voice, then it stops.
وشياط، ككتاب وأصله شواط، قلبت الواو ياء لانكسار ما قبلها، كسوط) وسياط.
And shiāṭ, like kitāb, and its origin is shawāṭ, the waw was changed to ya' due to the kasra before it, like sawṭ) and siyāṭ.
ودخوله في الأرض أنه يواري البعير وراكبه، ولا يكون إلا في سهول الأرض ينبت نبتا حسنا.
And its entering the land is that it conceals the camel and its rider, and it only occurs in fertile lands that grow good vegetation.
شوط الرجل تشويطا، إذا طال سفره.
The man's journeying, if his travel was long.
وشوط القدر وشيطها، إذ أغلاها.
And the pot's boiling and its intense boiling, meaning making it boil.
وشوط اللحم وشيطه: أنضجه، هكذا نقله عنه الصاغاني، وسيأتي أن تشييط اللحم وتشويطه، هو: أن يدخنه ولا ينضجه.
And the meat's cooking and its intense cooking: making it fully cooked, this is how Al-Saghani narrated it from him, and it will be mentioned later that smoking the meat and scorching it means: to smoke it without fully cooking it.
وشوط الصقيع النبت: أحرقه، وكذلك الدواء تذره على الجرح.
And the frost's scorching of the plant: burning it, and likewise medicine sprinkled on a wound.
وتشوط الفرس، إذا أدام طرده إلى أن أعيا ولغب.
And the horse ran exhaustedly, if its pursuit was continuous until it became tired and breathless.
وشوط: ع، ببلاد طيئ ظاهره أنه بالفتح، وقال الصاغاني في كتابيه: إنه بالضم، وأنشد لامرئ القيس: (فهل أنا ماش بين شوط وحية ... وهل أنا لاق حي قيس بن شمرا)
And Shawṭ: a place, in the land of Tayyi', its apparent pronunciation is with fatha, and Al-Saghani said in his two books: it is with damma, and he recited for Imru' al-Qais: (Am I walking between Shawṭ and Ḥiyyah... and will I meet the tribe of Qais bin Shamra?)
وفي رسم دار بين شوطان قد خلت ... ومر لها عامان عينك تدمع
And on the ruins of a dwelling between Shawṭān, which has passed... and two years have passed over it, your eyes tear up
بذلت لهم بذي شوطان شدي ... غداتئذ ولم أبذل قتالي
I exerted myself with them at Dhī Shawṭān, my effort... that morning, and I did not exert my fighting.
وقد يستعمل الشوط في الريح، نقله الليث، وأنشد: ونازح معتكر الأشواط يعني الريح.
And 'al-shawt' is used for wind, narrated by Al-Layth, and he recited: And a distant one, whose winds are turbulent, meaning the wind.
وشوط سفينته، إذا سافر بها، وهو مأخوذ من قول ابن الأعرابي.
And the journeying of his ship, if he traveled with it, and it is taken from the saying of Ibn Al-A'rabi.
والتشويطة اسم تلك المسافة، وقد يكنى بها عن الطاعون والأمراض المهلكة، وهو من ذلك.
And al-tashwīṭah is the name of that distance, and it can be a metaphor for the plague and deadly diseases, and it is from that.
والشوط بطين ذكره الحريري في المقامة الحضرمية، يضرب في طول الأمد بحيث يمكن أن يستدرك فيه ما فات، وأصله قول سليمان بن صرد، قال لعلي رضي الله عنه حين تأخر عن وقعة الجمل.
And 'al-shawt bi-ṭīn' was mentioned by Al-Hariri in the Maqamat Al-Ḥaḍramiyyah, it is used for a long duration during which what was missed can be caught up, and its origin is the saying of Sulayman bin Ṣurad, when he said to Ali, may God be pleased with him, when he delayed from the Battle of the Camel.
ولو تألف موشيا أكارعه ... من فدر شوطى بأدنى دلها ألفا
And if he were to associate with a spotted one, its legs... from the slopes of Shawṭā, with the slightest indication, he would find a thousand.
ومنه: عقيق شوطى.
And from it: the valley of Shawṭā.
وشاط: حصن بالأندلس، نقله الصاغاني.
And Shāṭ: a fortress in Al-Andalus, narrated by Al-Saghani.
وشوائط، بالفتح: بلدة باليمن، قرب تعز، منها الإمام شهاب الدين أحمد بن علي بن عمر بن أحمد بن بكر الشوائطي الحميري الكلاعي، ولد بها سنة وحدث عن البرهان بن صديق، والجمال بن ظهيرة، والزين المراغي، ومات بمكة، ترجمه الخيضري في الطبقات.
And Shawa'iṭ, with fatha: a town in Yemen, near Ta'izz, from which was Imam Shihab al-Din Ahmad bin Ali bin Umar bin Ahmad bin Bakr Al-Shawa'iṭi Al-Ḥimyarī Al-Kilā'ī, he was born there in the year and narrated from Al-Burhan bin Ṣiddīq, Al-Jamal bin Ẓahīrah, and Al-Zayn Al-Marāghī, and he died in Mecca, Al-Khayḍarī translated him in the Tabaqat.
