If width is mentioned with abundance, it indicates abundance of length, because length is more than width.
وقد عرض الشيء عرضا، كصغر صغرا، وعراضة، كسحابة، فهو عريض وعراض
And the thing became wide, like smallness became small, and 'arāḍah, like sābah, so it is wide and broad.
فوضع العريض موضع الكثير لأن كل واحد منهما مقدار
So 'wide' was placed in the position of 'much' because each of them is a measure.
ومن قوله تعالى: فذو دعاء عريض
And from His saying, the Almighty: 'And he is one with a wide supplication'.
وإن كان العرض إنما يقع في الأجسام، والدعاء ليس بجسم
Even though width pertains to physical bodies, and supplication is not a body.
وأما قوله تعالى: وجنة عرضها
As for His saying, the Almighty: 'And Paradise whose width is'.
إما أن يريد أن عرضها في النشأة الآخرة كعرض السموات والأرض في النشأة الأولى
Either He means that its width in the hereafter is like the width of the heavens and the earth in the first creation.
وقيل يعني بعرضها سعتها، لا من حيث المساحة
And it was said that its width means its vastness, not in terms of measurement.
العرض: أن يذهب الفرس في عدوه
Al-'arḍ: a horse running in its gallop.
وقد عرض إذا عدا عارضا صدره ورأسه مائلا
And it galloped when it ran, its chest and head leaning sideways.
العرض: أن يغبن الرجل في البيع
Al-'arḍ: a man being defrauded in a sale.
يقال: عارضته في البيع فعرضته أعرضه عرضا، من حد نصر
It is said: I bargained with him in the sale, and I was defrauded, I am defrauded, a defrauding, from the pattern of naṣara.
العرض: الجيش، شبه بالجبل في عظمه، أو بالسحاب الذي سد الأفق
Al-'arḍ: the army, likened to a mountain in its size, or to clouds that block the horizon.
أولئك فوارس أعراضنا
Those are the knights of our armies.
العرض: الجنون، وقد عرض كعني
Al-'arḍ: madness, and he became mad as if he were afflicted.
أخاف أن يكون عرض له أي عرض له الجن، وأصابه منهم مس
I fear that it might have occurred to him, meaning the jinn afflicted him, and a touch from them befell him.
العرض: أن يموت الإنسان من غير علة
Al-'arḍ: a person dying without any illness.
مضى عرض من الليل، أي ساعة منه
A portion of the night passed, meaning an hour of it.
العرض: السحاب مطلقا، أو هو ما سد الأفق منه
Al-'arḍ: clouds in general, or it is what obstructs the horizon from them.
العرض، بالكسر: الجسد، عن ابن الأعرابي
Al-'irḍ, with kasra: the body, from Ibn Al-A'rabi.
إنما هو عرق يجري من أعراضهم
It is only sweat flowing from their bodies.
قيل هو كل موضع يعرق منه، أي من الجسد
It was said: it is every place from which sweat flows, meaning from the body.
يقال: فلان طيب العرض، أي طيب الريح
It is said: so-and-so has a good 'irḍ, meaning a good scent.
العرض أيضا: النفس
Al-'irḍ also: the self.
أكرمت عنه عرضي، أي صنت عنه نفسي
I honored myself by refraining from it, meaning I protected my self from it.
فإن أبي ووالده وعرضي لعرض محمد منكم وقاء
Indeed, my father, his father, and my honor are a shield for Muhammad's honor from you.
العرض: موضع المدح والذم من الإنسان
Al-'irḍ: the place of praise and blame in a person.
كل المسلم على المسلم حرام، دمه وماله وعرضه
The Muslim's blood, property, and honor are forbidden to the Muslim.
العرض: ما يفتخر به الإنسان من حسب وشرف
Al-'irḍ: what a person boasts of in terms of lineage and honor.
ينبيك ذو عرضهم عني وعالمهم
The one of high status among them informs you about me and their knowledgeable one.
شتم فلان عرض فلان، معناه: ذكر أسلافه وآباءه بالقبيح
So-and-so insulted so-and-so's 'irḍ, meaning: he mentioned his ancestors and forefathers with ugliness.
فمن اتقى الشبهات استبرأ لدينه وعرضه، أي احتاط لنفسه
So whoever fears doubtful matters has safeguarded his religion and his honor, meaning he has been cautious for himself.
رب مهزول سمين عرضه وسمين الجسم مهزول الحسب
Perhaps a lean one whose honor is plump, and a plump-bodied one whose lineage is lean.
فلو كان العرض البدن والجسم على ما ادعى لم يقل ما قال، إذ كان مستحيلا للقائل أن يقول: رب مهزول سمين جسمه، لأنه مناقضة
And if 'irḍ were the body and the physique as he claimed, he would not have said what he said, as it would be impossible for the speaker to say: perhaps a lean one whose body is plump, because it is a contradiction.
إذا ذكر عرض فلان فمعناه أموره التي يرتفع أو يسقط بذكرها من جهتها بحمد أو بذم
If someone's 'irḍ is mentioned, it means his affairs by which he is elevated or degraded due to them, whether by praise or blame.
ثناء تشرق الأعراض عنه
Praise from which the sides shine.
العرض: الجيش الضخم، ويفتح، وهذا قد تقدم بعينه في كلامه، فهو تكرار
Al-'arḍ: the massive army, and it is opened (with fatha), and this has been mentioned exactly in his words, so it is a repetition.
العرض: الوادي يكون فيه قرى ومياه، أو كل واد فيه نخيل
Al-'arḍ: a valley containing villages and water, or every valley with palm trees.
لعرض من الأعراض تمسي حمامه
For a valley among the valleys, its dove spends the evening.
ألم تر أن العرض أصبح بطنه زنابيره والأزرق المتلمس
Have you not seen that the valley's belly has become its wasps and the searching blue one?
والمانع الأرض ذات العرض خشيه حتى تمنع من مرعى مجانيها
And preventing the land with its width, fearing it, until it is prevented from its free pasture.
وكذا عرض كل شيء ناحيته، والجمع الأعراض
And so is the side of everything, its direction, and the plural is 'a'rāḍ.
العرض: العظيم من السحاب يعترض في أفق السماء
Al-'arḍ: the great cloud that appears on the horizon of the sky.
