Menstruation is called 'hayd' from their saying: the flood 'had', meaning it overflowed.

They ask you about the 'mahīd'. Al-Zajjaj said: 'Mahīd' in this verse means the place of intercourse with a woman, because it is the place of menstruation, so it is as if He said: 'Abstain from women in the place of menstruation, and do not have intercourse with them in that place.'
والحيضة: المرة الواحدة، أي من دفع الحيض ونوبه.
And 'haydah': is one time, meaning of the onset and turns of menstruation.
وفي حديث أم سلمة: ليست حيضتك في يدك، هو بالكسر الاسم من الحيض، والحال التي تلزمها الحائض من التجنب كالجلسة والقعدة من الجلوس والقعود.
And in the hadith of Umm Salamah: 'Your 'haydah' is not in your hand', it is with a kasra, the noun from menstruation, and the state that the menstruating woman adheres to of avoidance, like 'jalsah' and 'qa'dah' from 'julus' and 'qu'ud'.
والحيضة، أيضا: الخرقة التي تستثفر بها المرأة.
And 'al-haydah', also: is the cloth with which a woman pads herself.
لَيْتَنِي كُنْتُ حَيْضَةً مَلْقَاةً
I wish I were a discarded menstrual cloth.

And 'tahyiyd': is causing to flow, Imarah ibn Aqeel said: The winds stirred their pebbles and they were made to flow with the flowing of the overwhelming torrents.

And 'tahyiyd': is intercourse during menstruation, as reported by Al-Sagani.
والمستحاضة: من يسيل دمها ولا يرقأ في غير أيام معلومة، لا من عرق الحيض، بل من عرق يقال له العاذل، وقد استحيضت.
And 'al-mustahaadah': is one whose blood flows and does not stop outside of the known days, not from the vein of menstruation, but from a vein called Al-'Adhil, and she has experienced 'istihaadah'.
استحيضت المرأة أي استمر بها الدم بعد أيامها، فهي مستحاضة، هكذا بالمبني على المفعول، ووجد بخط أبي زكريا: استحيضت، وهو استفعال من الحيض، وإذا استحيضت المرأة في غير أيام حيضها صلت وصامت، ولم تقعد كما تقعد الحائض عن الصلاة.
The woman 'istuhidat' meaning the blood continued with her after her days, so she is 'mustahaadah', thus in the passive form, and it was found in the handwriting of Abu Zakariyya: 'istahyadat', which is 'istif'aal' from 'al-hayd', and if a woman experiences 'istihaadah' outside of her menstrual days, she prays and fasts, and does not sit as the menstruating woman sits avoiding prayer.
وتحيضت: قعدت أيام حيضها عن الصلاة، أي تنتظر انقطاع الدم.
And 'tahayyadat': she sat during her menstrual days avoiding prayer, meaning waiting for the cessation of blood.
تحيضي في علم الله ستا أو سبعا كما في الصحاح، أي عدي نفسك حائضا، وافعلي ما تفعل الحائض، وإنما خص الست أو السبع لأنها الغالب على أيام الحيض.
'Count yourself, in Allah's knowledge, as six or seven' as in Al-Sihah, meaning consider yourself menstruating, and do what a menstruating woman does, and it was specified six or seven because that is the most common duration for menstrual days.
حاض السيل: فاض.
The flood overflowed: it was abundant.
والحيضة، بالكسر: الدم نفسه وكذلك المحيض.
And 'al-haydah', with a kasra: is the blood itself, and likewise 'al-mahīd'.
والحياض، ككتاب: دم الحيضة.

Their flowing menstrual blood streams... upon their heels, you would think it is dye.

And the Samra tree 'haadat' with 'haydan', and it is a tree from which something like blood flows, as in Al-Sihah, and this is metaphorical.
حاضت الشجرة: خرج منها الدودم، وهو شيء كالدم على التشبيه.
The tree 'haadat': the 'dudum' came out of it, which is something like blood by analogy.
والعزل حيض الرجال.
And withdrawal is the 'hayd' of men.
فلان ديدنه أن يحيص ويحيض. ويوشك أن يحيض.
So-and-so's habit is to withdraw and menstruate. And he is about to menstruate.
وتحيضت مثل حاضت، أو شبهت نفسها بالحائض.
And 'tahayyadat' is like 'haadat', or she likened herself to a menstruating woman.
حاضت: بلغت سن المحيض.
She 'haadat': she reached the age of menstruation.
لا تقبل صلاة حائض إلى بخمار فإنه لم يرد في أيام حيضها، لأن الحائض لا صلاة عليها.
The prayer of a menstruating woman is not accepted except with a veil, for it was not intended for her menstrual days, because the menstruating woman has no prayer upon her.
والمحيضة: الخرقة الملقاة، والجمع المحايض، نقله الجوهري.
And 'al-muhaydah': is the discarded cloth, and the plural is 'al-mahāyiḍ', as reported by Al-Jauhari.
يلقى فيها المحايض.
The discarded cloths are thrown into it.
وقيل: المحايض جمع المحيض، وهو مصدر حاض، فلما سمي به جمعه.
And it was said: 'Al-mahāyiḍ' is the plural of 'al-mahīd', which is the masdar of 'haada', so when it was named, its plural was used.
ويقع المحيض على المصدر، والزمان، والدم، كما تقدم.
And 'al-mahīd' applies to the masdar, the time, and the blood, as previously mentioned.
والحيضة: السيلة، والجمع الحيضات.
And 'al-haydah': is the stream, and the plural is 'al-hayḍāt'.
ويجمع الحائض أيضا على حاضة، كحائك وحاكة، وسائق وساقة.
And 'al-ḥā'iḍ' is also pluralized as 'ḥāḍah', like 'ḥā'ik' and 'ḥā'ikah', and 'sā'iq' and 'sā'iqah'.
