مَحَصَ الظبي، كمنع، يمحص محصا: عدا شديدا، أو أسرع في عدوه.
The gazelle ran intensely, like 'manea', it runs, 'yamḥiṣu', 'maḥṣan': it ran hard, or it sped up in its running.
وعادية تلقي الثياب كأنها ... تيوس ظباء محصها وانبتارها
And a swift one that throws off clothes as if they were... male gazelles, their intense running and their bounding away.
محص المذبوح برجله، مثل دحص: ركض
The slaughtered animal kicked with its leg, like 'daḥaṣa': it ran.
محص الذهب بالنار: أخلصه مما يشوبه
He purified the gold with fire: he separated it from what mixed with it.
محص بالرجل الأرض محصا: ضربه بها إياها.
He struck the ground with his foot, 'maḥṣan': he hit it with it.
محص بسلحه: رمى به
He threw with his excrement: he threw it.
محص السراب أو البرق، إذا لمع، فهو برق محاص، وسراب محاص، فيهما لمعان.
The mirage or lightning flashed, when it shimmered, it is a shimmering lightning, and a shimmering mirage, they have a shimmer.
محص فلان مني محصا، إذا هرب.
So-and-so fled from me, 'maḥṣan', if he fled.
محص السنان محصا، أي جلاه، فهو ممحوص، ومحيص، أي مجلو.
He polished the spearhead, 'maḥṣan', meaning he polished it, so it is 'mammaḥūṣ' and 'maḥīṣ', meaning polished.
وشفوا بممحوص القطاع فؤاده ... لهم قترات قد بنين محاتد
And they pierced his heart with the polished tips... they have layers that have been built.
أي مجلو القطاع، وهو قول الأخفش.
Meaning the polished tips, and this is the saying of Al-Akhfash.
والقطاع: النصال.
And 'al-qiṭāʿ': the spearheads.
ويروى: منحوض، أي رمي بالنصال حتى رق فؤاده من الفزع.
And it is narrated: 'manḥūḍ', meaning he was struck with spearheads until his heart became thin from fear.
وهما، أي الممحوص والمحيص أيضا: الشديد الخلق المدمج من الخيل والإبل والحمير.
And both, meaning 'al-mammaḥūṣ' and 'al-maḥīṣ' also: the strongly built and compact ones among horses, camels, and donkeys.
أقب ككر الأندري محيص
Short-backed like the compact 'al-Andarī', 'maḥīṣ'.
شديد جلز الصلب ممحوص الشوى ... كالكر لا شخت ولا فيه لوى
Strong, firm, solid, with polished limbs... like the compact one, not tall and not twisted.
فرس ممحوص القوائم، إذا خلص من الرهل، وقالوا: يستحب من الخيل أن تمحص قوائمه، أي تخلص من الرهل.
A horse with polished legs, if it is free from roughness, and they said: it is preferred for horses that their legs be purified, meaning freed from roughness.
وحبل محص، ككتف: أجيد فتله حتى ذهب زئبره ولان، وقد محصه محصا، وكذلك الملص.
And a rope 'maḥiṣ', like 'katif': its twisting is excellent until its fuzz is gone and it is smooth, and he twisted it 'maḥṣan', and likewise 'malṣ'.
ويقال: وتر محص، إذا محص بمشاقة حتى ذهب زئبره.
And it is said: a bowstring 'maḥiṣ', if it is smoothed with flax until its fuzz is gone.
بها محص غير جافي القوى ... إذا مطي حن بورك حدال
It has a 'maḥiṣ' (smooth) one, not rough in its strength... when the camel is urged, it groans with its load.
ومحص كساق السوذقاني نازعت ... بكفي جشاء البغام خفوق
And a 'maḥṣ' like the leg of the 'Sūdhqānī' struggled... in my hands, the throat of the partridge is beating.
أراد: ومحص، فخففه، وهو الزمام الشديد الفتل.
He intended: 'wa maḥṣ', and he shortened it, and it is the rein of strong twisting.
وفرس محص، بالفتح ممحص، كمعظم: شديد الخلق
And a horse 'maḥṣ', with fatha, 'mammaḥṣ', like 'muʿẓam': strongly built.
أما الممحص فالشديد الخلق، والأنثى ممحصة، وأنشد:
As for 'al-mammaḥṣ', it is the strongly built one, and the female is 'mammaḥṣah', and he recited:
ممحص الخلق وأي فرافصه كل شديد أسره مصامصه
Strongly built of creation, and any 'farāfiṣah', every strong one whose capture is 'maṣāmiṣ'.
قال: والمحص بمنزلة الممحص، والجمع محاص ومحاصات.
He said: And 'al-maḥṣ' is like 'al-mammaḥṣ', and the plural is 'maḥāṣ' and 'maḥāṣāt'.
محص الشوى معصوبة قوائمه
Lean-limbed are its legs, tightly bound.
قال: ومعنى: محص الشوى: قليل اللحم.
He said: And the meaning of 'maḥṣ al-shawā': little flesh.
محص المعذر أشرفت حجباته ... ينضو السوابق زاهق قرد
The 'maḥṣ' of the shoulder blade, its membranes have become prominent... it sheds the preceding ones, a fleeing monkey.
والمحاص، ككتان: البراق، وقد محص البرق والسراب.
And 'al-maḥāṣ', like 'kattān': the shimmering, and lightning and mirage have shimmered.
في الآل بالدوية المحاص
In the heat haze in the plain, 'al-maḥāṣ'.
الدوية المحاص، ككتان، هي الفلاة التي يمحص الناس فيها السير، أي يجدون، من محص الظبي: إذا جد في عدوه.
'Al-dawiyyah al-maḥāṣ', like 'kattān', is the desert where people find the journey difficult, meaning they find it hard, from 'maḥaṣa al-ẓaby': when it exerted itself in its running.
الأمحص: من يقبل اعتذار الصادق والكاذب.
'Al-amḥaṣ': one who accepts the excuses of the truthful and the liar.
أمحص الرجل إمحاصا: برأ من مرضه
The man recovered, 'imḥāṣan': he was cured of his illness.
أمحصت الشمس: ظهرت من الكسوف وانجلت
The sun cleared: it appeared from the eclipse and became visible.
فرغ من الصلاة، وقد أمحصت الشمس كانمحصت
He finished the prayer, and the sun had cleared as if it had cleared.
والتمحيص: الابتلاء والاختبار
And 'al-tamḥīṣ': the testing and the trial.
وليمحص الله الذين آمنوا
And that Allah may test those who believe.
جعل الله الأيام دولا بين الناس ليمحص المؤمنين بما يقع عليهم من قتل، أو ألم، أو ذهاب مال، قال: ويمحق الكافرين
Allah made days alternate among people to test the believers with what befalls them of killing, or pain, or loss of wealth, he said: and to destroy the disbelievers.
التمحيص: التنقيص، يقال: محص الله عنك ذنوبك، أي نقصها
'Al-tamḥīṣ': reduction, it is said: Allah reduced your sins, meaning He diminished them.
فسمى الله ما أصاب المسلمين من بلاء تمحيصا، لأنه ينقص به ذنوبهم، وسماه الله من الكافرين محقا.
So Allah called what befell the Muslims of tribulation a purification ('tamḥīṣ'), because He reduces their sins with it, and Allah called it destruction ('maḥq') for the disbelievers.
التمحيص: تنقية اللحم من العقب ليفتله وترا.
'Al-tamḥīṣ': cleaning the meat from the sinew to twist it into a rope.
محصت العقب من الشحم، إذا نقيته منه، لتفتله وترا
She cleaned the sinew from the fat, if you purified it from it, to twist it into a rope.
وانمحص: أفلت.
And 'inmaḥaṣa': he escaped.
انمحص الورم، إذا سكن، مثل انحمص
The swelling subsided, if it calmed down, like 'inḥamaṣa'.
المحص: خلوص الشيء، ومحصه يمحصه محصا، ومحصه تمحيصا: خلصه، من كل عيب
'Al-maḥṣ': the purity of a thing, and he purified it, 'yamḥiṣuhu', 'maḥṣan', and he purified it, 'tamḥīṣan': he made it pure, from every defect.
وليمحص الله الذين آمنوا أي يخلصهم.
And that Allah may purify the believers, meaning He makes them pure.
يمحص الناس فيها كما يمحص ذهب المعدن أي يخلصون بعضهم من بعض كما يخلص ذهب المعدن من التراب
People are purified in it as gold from the mine is purified, meaning they are separated from each other as gold from the mine is separated from the dirt.
وتمحيص الذنوب. تطهيرها.
And the purification of sins. Their cleansing.
محص عنا ذنوبنا، أي أذهب ما تعلق بنا من الذنوب.
Purify from us our sins, meaning remove what has attached to us of sins.
الممحص: الذي محصت عنه ذنوبه، عن كراع.
'Al-mammaḥṣ': he whose sins have been purified, from Kurāʿ.
محص الله ما بك، ومحصه: أذهبه، وهو مجاز، وكذا تمحصت ذنوبه.
Allah removed what was with you, and He removed it: He made it go away, and this is metaphorical, and likewise his sins were removed.
امتحص الظبي في عدوه: أسرع فيه.
The gazelle sped up in its running: it hastened in it.
وهن يمحصن امتحاص الأظب
And they are running with the speed of gazelles.
جاء بالمصدر على غير الفعل لأن محص وامتحص واحد.
He brought the masdar in a form other than the verb because 'maḥaṣa' and 'imtaḥaṣa' are the same.
ومحص بها محصا، إذا ضرط.
And he farted with it, 'maḥṣan', if he farted.
وحبل محيص، كأمير: أجرد، أملس، شديد الفتل.
And a rope 'maḥīṣ', like 'amīr': smooth, sleek, tightly twisted.
وتمحصت الظلماء: تكشفت.
And the darkness cleared: it became revealed.
محت عن الرجل يده، أو غيرها، إذا كان بها ورم فأخذ في النقصان والذهاب، عن أبي زيد.
He removed from the man his hand, or something else, if there was swelling in it and it began to decrease and go away, from Abu Zayd.
والمعروف من هذا، حمص الجرح، وقد تقدم.
And what is known of this is 'ḥamaṣa al-jarḥ', and it has been mentioned before.
أمحصت السهم: أنفذته، نقله ابن القطاع، عن أبي زيد.
He made the arrow penetrate: he shot it through, narrated by Ibn al-Qaṭṭāʿ, from Abu Zayd.
محص الثور البقرة: سفدها، نقله ابن القطاع.
The bull mounted the cow: he had intercourse with her, narrated by Ibn al-Qaṭṭāʿ.
