And it was said: 'al-ghamaṣ' is something the eye casts out like foam, and a piece of it is 'ghamṣah'.
والغمص الذي يكون مثل الزبد أبيض، يكون في ناحية العين، والرمص الذي يكون في أصول الهدب.
And 'al-ghamaṣ' is what is like white foam, found at the side of the eye, and 'al-ramṣ' is what is at the roots of the eyelashes.
وإنما سميت الغميصاء بهذا الاسم لصغرها، وقلة ضوئها، من غمص العين، لأن العين إذا غمصت صغرت.
Al-Ghumaysā' was named this because of its smallness and dim light, from 'ghamasa al-'ayn', because when the eye is affected, it becomes small.
وبكت الأخرى على إثرها حتى غمصت فسميت الغميصاء.
And the other wept in its wake until its eye became affected, so it was named Al-Ghumaysā'.
وأقامت الغميصاء مكانها فبكت لفقدهما حتى غمصت عينها، وهي تصغير الغمصاء.
And Al-Ghumaysā' remained in its place and wept for their absence until its eye was affected, and it is the diminutive of Al-Ghamṣā'.
هو الموضع الذي أوقع فيه خالد ابن الوليد، رضي الله تعالى عنه، ببني جذيمة من بني كنانة.
It is the place where Khalid ibn al-Walid, may God bless him, attacked Banu Judhaymah from Banu Kinanah.
وكائن ترى يوم الغميصاء من فتى ... أصيب ولم يجرح وقد كان جارحا.
And how many a youth you see on the day of Al-Ghumaysā' ... was struck without being wounded, though he was a striker.
وأصبح عني بالغميصاء جالسا ... فريقان مسؤول وآخر يسأل.
And two groups sat with me at Al-Ghumaysā', one asking and the other being asked.
الغميصاء: اسم أم أنس ابن مالك، رضي الله تعالى عنه، هكذا في سائر الأصول، ومثله في العباب.
Al-Ghumaysā': The name of the mother of Anas ibn Malik, may God be pleased with him, as is in all manuscripts and similarly in Al-'Abbāb.
بل الغميصاء: اسم أم حرام بنت ملحان.
Rather, Al-Ghumaysā' is the name of Umm Haram bint Milḥān.
وأما أم أنس فالرميصاء، كما قاله الحافظ ابن حجر وغيره.

الرميصاء أو الغميصاء أم سليم زوجة أبي طلحة، وأم أنس كبيرة القدر.
Al-Ramisā' or Al-Ghumaysā' is Umm Sulaym, the wife of Abu Talhah, and the mother of Anas, of great stature.
الغُمَيْصَاءُ وقيل الرميصاء: أم سليم بنت ملحان.

وبه سميت أم سليم الغميصاء.
And by it, Umm Sulaym was named Al-Ghumaysā'.
يقال: لا تغمص علي، أي لا تكذب.
It is said: 'Do not 'taghmaṣ' upon me', meaning do not lie.
أي لا تغضب.
Meaning, do not be angry.
غمص الله الخلق: نقصهم من الطول، والعرض، والقوة، والبطش، فصغرهم وحقرهم.
God 'ghamasa' creation: He diminished them in height, breadth, strength, and might, thus making them small and insignificant.
ورجل غمص، ككتف، على النسب، أي عياب.
And a man 'ghamaṣ', like 'katif', by lineage, meaning fault-finding.
وأنا متغمص من هذا الخبر ومتوصم، وذلك إذا كان خبرا يسره ويخاف ألا يكون حقا، أو يخافه ويسره.
And I am 'mutaghammiṣ' from this news and 'mutawaṣṣim', which is when the news pleases him and he fears it might not be true, or he fears it and it pleases him.
