Al-Farra' said: Al-ʿaraqṣān, meaning with fath on the 'ayn and 'ra', and likewise al-ʿartan, their origin is ʿarnuqṣān and ʿarantan, so they deleted the 'nun' and kept the other vowels, and they are two plants.
وقال الدينوري: العرقصاء: الحندقوقى، أو يربطو، هكذا في سائر النسخ وهو الذرق.
And Al-Dinawari said: Al-ʿaraqṣāʾ: is the hyssop, or yerba, as is in all copies, and it is al-dharq.
قالوا: هو نبات ساقه كساق الرازيانج، وجمته وافرة متكاثفة، عظيم النفع في جميع أنواع الوباء، ولوجع السن المتأكل بالتغرغر بماء أغلي فيه، لوجع الأذن والطحال والصداع المزمن والنزلات وغيرها
They said: It is a plant whose stem is like the stem of fennel, and its foliage is abundant and dense, greatly beneficial in all types of plague, and for toothache eroded by gargling with water boiled in it, for earache, spleen, chronic headache, colds, and others.
قال ابن عباد: العرقصة مثل الرقص
Ibn Abbad said: Al-ʿaraqaṣa is like al-raqs (dancing).
قال الفراء: العرقصة: مشي الحية.
Al-Farra' said: Al-ʿaraqaṣa: is the movement of the snake.
قال ابن سيده: العرقصان، والعرنقصان: دابة، عن السيرافي، وفي الأبنية: عرنقصان فعنللان: دابة، وعرقصان محذوف منه.
Ibn Sidah said: Al-ʿaraqṣān, and al-ʿarnuqṣān: a creature, from Al-Sirafi, and in the patterns: ʿarnuqṣān is faʿlalān: a creature, and ʿaraqṣān is derived from it by elision.
وقال ابن بري: دابة من الحشرات.
And Ibn Biri said: A creature from the insects.
وهو بعينه نص أبي عمر و، وفاته من لغات العرقصاء العرقص، كقنفذ، والعرقص، كعلبط، ذكرهما صاحب اللسان.
And it is exactly the text of Abu 'Amr, and he missed from the variants of al-ʿaraqṣāʾ: al-ʿaraqṣ, like qunfudh, and al-ʿaraqṣ, like ʿalabaṭ, the author of Al-Lisān mentioned them.
