And the polytheists used to say to the Prophet, peace be upon him: Son of Abu Kabshah.
قيل: شبهوه بأبي كبشة، رجل من خزاعة، ثم من بني غبشان، خالف قريشا في عبادة الأصنام، وعبد الشعري العبور
It was said: They likened him to Abu Kabshah, a man from Khuzā'ah, then from Banu Ghubshān, who opposed Quraysh in idol worship and worshipped the star Al-Shi'ri al-'Abūr.
وإنما شبهوه به لخلافه إياهم إلى عبادة الله تعالى، كما خالفهم أبو كبشة إلى عبادة الشعري
They only likened him to him because he deviated from them to the worship of God Almighty, just as Abu Kabshah deviated from them to the worship of Al-Shi'ri.
وقال ابن قتيبة: إنه كان يعبد الشعري دون العرب، فلما جاءهم صلى الله عليه وسلم بعبادة الله سبحانه وتعالى دون عبادة ما كانوا يعبدون من الأصنام، شبهوه في شذوذه عنهم بشذوذ بعض أجداده من قبل أمه في عبادة الشعري وانفصاله منهم.
And Ibn Qutaybah said: He used to worship Al-Shi'ri instead of the idols worshipped by the Arabs. When the Prophet, peace be upon him, came to them with the worship of God, may He be glorified, instead of worshipping what they used to worship from idols, they likened him in his deviation from them to the deviation of some of his maternal ancestors in worshipping Al-Shi'ri and separating from them.

Or it is the kunyah of the husband of Halimah Al-Sa'diyyah who nursed him, peace be upon him, and he is Al-Harith ibn 'Abd al-'Uzzā.
وقيل: بل قالوا ذلك عداوة منهم، إذ لم يجدوا في نسبه طعنا، ولا في مفخره وهنا.
And it was said: Rather, they said that out of enmity, as they found no fault in his lineage, nor weakness in his pride.

And Abu Kabshah: the kunyah of a freed slave of the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, from the inhabitants of Al-Sarāh.
