So he made Al-hanash the ground animals, including snakes and others, which are the insects of the earth, like the hedgehog, the lizard, the monitor lizard, the gerbil, the rats, the mice, and the snake.
أو الحنش: ما أشبه رأسه رأس الحيات من الحرابي وسوام أبرص ونحوها، قاله الليث
Or Al-hanash: that which resembles snakes in its head, like certain lizards and geckos, said Al-Layth.
ترى قطعا من الأحناش فيه ... جماجمهن كالخشل النزيع
You see pieces of the creeping creatures in it... their skulls are like scattered branches.
وعن ابن الأعرابي: المحنوش: ملدوغ الحنش
And from Ibn Al-A'rabi: Al-mahnush: one bitten by a hanash.
فقل لذاك المزعج المحنوش ... أصبح فما من بشر مأروش
So say to that agitated, bitten one... he woke up, and there is no trace of humanity left.
وعنه أيضا: المحنوش: المسوق كرها، جئت به تحنشه، أي تسوقه مكرها
And from him also: Al-mahnush: driven by force; you brought him, driving him, meaning forcing him.
وقال أبو عمرو: المحنوش: المغمور الحسب، وقد حنش، إذا غمز في حسبه.
And Abu 'Amr said: Al-mahnush: one of obscure lineage, and he has 'hanasha' when his lineage is questioned.
ورجل محنوش: مغرى، وقد حنشه، إذا أغراه، نقله الصاغاني.
And a man mahnush: tempted, and he has 'hanashahu' if he tempted him, transmitted by Al-Saghani.
وحنشه) يحنشه، من حد ضرب: طرده ونحاه من مكان إلى آخر، كعنجه، فأبدلت العين حاء، والجيم شينا.
And 'hanashahu' (he drove him away), from the pattern of 'daraba': to drive him away and remove him from one place to another, like 'anajahu', where the 'ayn was replaced by ha', and the jim by shin.
وحنشه عن الأمر: عطفه، لغة في عنشه، كأحنشه.
And 'hanashahu 'an al-amr': to turn him away from the matter, a dialectal variant of 'anashahu (عَنَشَهُ), like 'ahanashahu.
وحنش الصيد يحنشه: صاده، كأحنشه.
And 'hanasha al-sayda yanhushuhu': he hunted the prey, like 'ahanashahu.
ورجل محنش، كمنبر: معتمل كسوب، نقله الصاغاني.
And a man muhannash, like 'minbar': industrious and gain-seeking, transmitted by Al-Saghani.
