Meaning, have those who believed not known with a knowledge that made them despair that it could be other than what they knew.
قيل لابن عباس: إنها ييأس، فقال: أظن الكاتب كتبها وهو ناعس
It was said to Ibn Abbas: 'It is yā'asu', so he said: 'I think the scribe wrote it while he was drowsy'.
أقول لهم بالشعب إذ ييسرونني ... ألم! تيأسوا أني ابن فارس زهدم
I say to them in the valley when they divide me... Have you not despaired that I am the son of Fāris Zahdam?
لا {يأس من طول أي قامته لا} تؤيس من طوله لأنه كان إلى الطول أقرب منه إلى القصر
No despair from his height, meaning do not despair of his height because he was closer to tall than to short.
واليأس: ضد الرجاء، وهو في الحديث اسم نكرة مفتوح بلا النافية
