Or it is little flagging at night and day, said Abu Al-Sumaydi'.
وقيل: الهمس: حس الصوت في الفم، مما لا إشراب له من صوت الصدر ولا جهارة في المنطق، ولكنه كلام مهموس في الفم كالسر، قاله الليث
And it is said: The whisper is the sound of the voice in the mouth, which has no resonance from the chest and no loudness in speech, but rather it is whispered speech in the mouth like a secret, said Al-Layth.
والحروف المهموسة عشرة، يجمعها قولك: حثه شخص فسكت
And the whispered letters are ten, gathered by your saying: 'Haththahu shakhsun fasakata' (Urge him, a person, so he was silent).
فأما حروف الهمس فإن الصوت الذي يخرج معه نفس، وليس من صوت الصدر، إنما يخرج منسلا

And it is said: The one who strongly grips with his molar, like al-hammas, like kattan.
وقيل: سمي الأسد هموسا، لأنه يهمس في الظلمة
And it is said: The lion is named humoos because it moves stealthily in the darkness.
وقال أبو الهيثم: لأنه يمشي مشيا بخفية فلا يسمع صوت وطئه
And Abu Al-Haytham said: Because it walks stealthily so its tread is not heard.
أسد هموس: يمشي قليلا قليلا، وهو معنى قول الجوهري: الأسد الهموس: الخفي الوطء
A stealthy lion: walks little by little, and this is the meaning of Al-Jawahiri's statement: The stealthy lion: has a hidden tread.

والهميس، كأمير: صوت نقل أخفاف الإبل

وبه فسر ما روي عن ابن عباس، رضي الله تعالى عنهما، أنه تمثل فأنشد
