From the evil of {the whispering, the retreating (Satan)}.
وَقِيلَ: أَرَادَ ذَا الْوَسْوَاسِ، وَهُوَ الشَّيْطَانُ الَّذِي يُوَسْوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ
And it is said: he intended the one with whispering, which is the devil who whispers in the chests of people.
فَإِذَا ذَكَرَ الْعَبْدُ اللَّهَ خَنَسَ، وَإِذَا تَرَكَ ذِكْرَ اللَّهِ رَجَعَ إِلَى الْقَلْبِ يُوَسْوِسُ
So when the servant remembers Allah, he retreats, and when he abandons the remembrance of Allah, he returns to the heart to whisper.
وَالْوَسْوَاسُ: هَمْسُ الصَّائِدِ وَالْكِلَابِ، وَهُوَ الصَّوْتُ الْخَفِيُّ
And al-Waswas: is the whisper of the hunter and the dogs, and it is the hidden sound.
يَعْنِي بِالْوَسْوَاسِ هَمْسَ الصَّائِدِ وَكَلَامَهُ الْخَفِيَّ
He means by al-Waswas the whisper of the hunter and his hidden speech.
تَسْمَعُ لِلْحُلِيِّ وَسْوَاسًا إِذَا انْصَرَفَتْ ... كَمَا اسْتَعَانَ بِرِيحٍ عِشْرَقٍ زَجِلُ
You hear the jewelry making a whispering sound when it moves... like a loud wind helping a swift bird.
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي رَدَّ كَيْدَهُ إِلَى الْوَسْوَسَةِ
Praise be to Allah who turned his plot back to whispering.
هِيَ حَدِيثُ النَّفْسِ وَالْأَفْكَارِ، وَحَدِيثُ الشَّيْطَانِ بِمَا لَا نَفْعَ فِيهِ وَلَا خَيْرَ، كَالْوَسْوَاسِ
It is the talk of the self and thoughts, and the devil's talk with what is in it no benefit and no good, like al-Waswas.
فَوَسْوَسَ لَهُمَا الشَّيْطَانُ
Then Satan whispered to them both.
وَسْوَسَةٌ: الْكَلَامُ الْخَفِيُّ فِي اخْتِلَاطٍ
Whispering: hidden speech mixed with confusion.
وَوَسْوَسَ بِهِ بِالضَّمِّ: اخْتَلَطَ كَلَامُهُ وَدَهِشَ
And to be confused by it (with damma): his speech became mixed and he was bewildered.
وَسْوَسَ، إِذَا تَكَلَّمَ بِكَلَامٍ لَمْ يُبَيِّنْهُ
And he whispered, if he spoke words that he did not clarify.
وَسْوَسَ يَدْعُو مُخْلِصًا رَبَّ الْفَلَقِ
He whispered, sincerely calling the Lord of the Dawn.
وَوَسْوَسَهُ: كَلَّمَهُ كَلَامًا خَفِيًّا
And he whispered to him: he spoke to him with hidden speech.
