And Maqas is the nickname of Musahhir bin al-Nu'man bin 'Amr bin Rabi'ah bin Taym bin al-Harith bin Malik bin 'Ubayd bin Khuzaymah bin Lu'ayy bin Ghalib al-'A'idhi the poet, attributed to 'A'izah bint al-Khams bin Qaḥafah, who is their mother. And he was called Maqas because a man said: He composes poetry as he wishes, meaning he says it. It is said: he eats as much as he wishes.

والتمقيس في الماء: الإكثار من صبه، عن ابن عباد
And excessive pouring in water: is the abundance of pouring it, according to Ibn 'Abbad.
والمماقسة: المغاطة في الماء، وكذلك التماقس
And al-mumāqasah: is the immersion in water, and likewise al-tamāqus.
وفي الحديث: خرج عبد الرحمن بن زيد وعاصم ابن عمر يتماقسان في البحر، أي يتغاوصان
And in the hadith: 'Abd al-Rahman bin Zayd and 'Asim bin 'Umar went out diving in the sea, meaning they were plunging.
