And al-funṭās, with kasra: the ship's bilge where water collects, and in corrected manuscripts: it is where its water is drained, said Abu 'Amr, and the plural is fanāṭīs. This is the origin, then it became common until they named a water skin after it, meaning a ship constructed from planks to carry fresh water for drinking.

وقال ابن الأعرابي: الفنطاس: قدح من خشب يكون ظاهره منقشا بالصفرة والحمرة والخضرة يقسم به الماء العذب فيها، وفي نص ابن الأعرابي: بين أهل المركب.

And Ibn Al-A'rabi said: al-funṭās: a wooden cup whose exterior is decorated with yellow, red, and green, by which fresh water is divided among the people of the vessel.
