Al-Tirimmah said, describing hunting dogs: (He restrains with ropes every cunning one... from those that feed on prey, not those that are hesitant).
وهو على التشبيه
And it is by way of simile.
والعملس: اسم رجل كان برا بأمه
And Al-'amals: the name of a man who was pious to his mother.
ويقال: إنه كان يحج بها على ظهره، ومنه المثل: هو أبر من العملس
And it is said: He used to perform Hajj with her on his back, and from this is the proverb: He is more pious than Al-'amals.
والعملوسة، بالضم، من نعت القوس الشديدة السريعة السهم، عن ابن عباد
And Al-'amalūsa, with damma, is a description of a strong, fast-shooting bow, from Ibn 'Abbad.
وإن صح ما قاله فإن قولهم: قوس عملسة: محمول على المجاز
And if what he said is correct, then their saying: a swift bow, is to be understood metaphorically.
والعملسة: السرعة، عن ابن دريد
And Al-'amalsa: speed, from Ibn Durayd.
قيل: ومنه قيل للذئب: عملس
