نهز بالدلو في البئر ينهز بها نهزا: ضرب بها في الماء، وفي بعض الأصول: إلى الماء لتمتلئ، وفي الأساس: حركها لتمتلئ.

He moved the bucket in the well, moving it with a striking motion: he struck it in the water, and in some versions: towards the water to fill it, and in Al-Asas: he moved it to fill it.

النهزة، بالضم: الفرصة تجدها من صاحبك، ويقال: فلان نهزة المختلس، أي هو صيد لكل أحد.

Al-nahzah, with dammah: the opportunity you find from your companion, and it is said: So-and-so is prey for the snatch-thief, meaning he is game for anyone.

وانتهزها: اغتنمها.

وتقول: انتهزها قد أمكنتك قبل الفوت.

And you say: Seize it, for it has become possible for you before it is too late.

وفي الأساس: انتهز في الضحك: أفرط فيه وقبح، نقله الصاغاني.

And in Al-Asas: he overdid it in laughter: he was excessive and improper in it, as reported by Al-Sagani.

ناهزه مناهزة: داناه وقاربه، وكذلك نهزه، يقال: ناهز فلان الحلم، والصبي البلوغ، وكذا قولهم: ناهز الخمسين، وقال الشاعر:

He approached it with a close approach: he drew near to it and came close to it, and likewise he approached it; it is said: So-and-so is approaching puberty, and the boy adolescence, and likewise their saying: he is nearing fifty, and the poet said:

ترضع شبلين في مغارهما ... قد ناهزا للفطام أو فطما

She nurses two cubs in their den... who have neared weaning or have been weaned

ناهز الصيد مناهزة: بادره فقبض عليه قبل إفلاته.

He pursued the prey with haste: he rushed it and caught it before it escaped.

وتناهزا: تبادرا واغتنما، أنشد سيبويه:

And they raced each other: they hastened and seized the opportunity, as narrated by Sibawayh:

ولقد علمت إذا الرجال تناهزوا ... أيي وأيكم أعز وأمنع

And I know well, when men race each other... who among you and me is more honored and stronger

يقال: نهز كذا، بالفتح، ونهازه، بالضم والكسر، أي قدره وزهاؤه.

It is said: 'Nahaza' such-and-such, with fatha, and 'nahazahu', with dammah and kasrah, meaning its estimate and its value.

يقال: إبل نهز مائة، أي قرابتها، وقال الأزهري: كان الناس نهز عشرة آلاف، أي قربها، وحقيقته: كان ذا نهز.

It is said: camels near a hundred, meaning their proximity, and Al-Azhari said: the people were near ten thousand, meaning their proximity, and its reality: he had proximity.

النهز، ككتف: الأسد، نقله الصاغاني، كأنه لدفعه وضربه وحركته.

Al-nahiz, like 'katif': the lion, as reported by Al-Sagani, as if due to its pushing, striking, and movement.

النههاز، كشداد: الحمار الذي ينهز بصدره للسير، قال:

Al-nahhaz, like 'shaddad': the donkey that pushes forward with its chest for travel, he said:

فلا يزال شاحج يأتيك بج ... أقمر نهاز ينزي زفرتج

So a braying one will keep coming to you with... a bright, forward-pushing one that makes its hindquarters move

والمنهز، كمكرم، من الركية: ما ظهر من ظهرها حيث تقوم السانية، إذا دنا من فم الركية) هكذا نقله الصاغاني.

Pushing with its forelegs, agile with its chest

وأنهزت الناقة: إذا نهز ولدها ضرعها، هكذا قاله ابن الأعرابي، وروى قول الشاعر:

And the she-camel was stimulated: if its young nudged its udder, thus said Ibn Al-A'rabi, and he narrated the saying of the poet:

ولكنها كانت ثلاثا مياسرا ... وحائل حول أنهزت فأحلت

But she was three years of ease... and a barren one around [whom] was stimulated and became pregnant

ورواه غير أنهلت باللام.

And others narrated it as 'anhalat' with 'lam'.

ودلاء نواهز، قال الشماخ:

And buckets that move vigorously in water, Al-Shammakh said:

غدون لها صعر الخدود كما غدت ... على ماء يمؤود الدلاء النواهز

They went to it with tilted cheeks, as they went... to the water where the vigorously moving buckets were

يقول: غدت هذه الحمر لهذا الماء كما غدت الدلاء النواهز في يمؤد.

He says: These wild asses went to this water as the vigorously moving buckets went in the water.

وقيل: النواهز: اللاتي ينهزن في الماء، أي يحركن، ليمتلئن، فاعل بمعنى مفعول.

And it was said: Al-nawāhiz: those that move vigorously in the water, meaning they are moved, to fill up, an active participle in the sense of a passive one.

وهما يتناهزان إمارة بلد كذا، أي يتبادران إلى طلبها وتناولها.

And they are competing for the governorship of such-and-such a country, meaning they are hastening to seek and attain it.

والمناهزة: المسابقة.

And al-munahazah: racing.

ونهز الرجل: مد بعنقه ونأى بصدره، ليتهوع.

And the man strained: he extended his neck and pushed forward with his chest, to vomit.

ونهز قيحا: قذفه.

And he expelled pus: he threw it out.

ويقال: نهزتني إليك حاجة، أي جاءت بي إليك.

And it is said: A need urged me to you, meaning it brought me to you.

واستدرك شيخنا من التوشيح للجلال: أنهزه إنهازا: دفعه.

And our shaykh added from Al-Tawshih by Al-Jalal: He pushed it forcefully: he pushed it.

وأنهزه أيضا، كأنهضه، وزنا ومعنى.

And he made it rise also, like 'anhadahu', in weight and meaning.

And they have named [people] Munahiz and Nuhayz.
