Sībawayh said: Ma'zā is vowelled and declinable, because the alif is for augmentation, not for feminine gender.

وقال الفراء: المعزى مؤنثة، وبعضهم ذكرها

And al-Farra' said: Al-ma'zā is feminine, and some masculine it.

وقال الأصمعي: قلت لأبي عمرو بن العلاء: معزى من المعز قال: نعم

Al-Aṣma'ī said: I said to Abū 'Amr ibn al-'Alā': Is ma'zā from al-ma'z? He said: Yes.

And al-ḍā'in: is the weak and foolish.

والأمعوز، بالضم: السرب من الظباء، قيل: الثلاثون منها إلى ما بلغت

And al-am'az, with a damma: is a herd of gazelles, it is said: from thirty up to what they reach.

وقال الأزهري: جماعة الثياتل من الأوعال

And al-Azhari said: A group of female wild goats.

يقال: ما أمعزه من رجل، أي ما أشده وأصلبه، قاله الليث

It is said: How tough is he as a man, meaning how strong and firm he is, said al-Layth.

تمعز الوجه: تقبض

The face became contracted.

تمعز البعير، إذا اشتد عدوه

The camel became fast, when its running intensified.

ومعز الرجل، كفرح: كثرت معزاه، كأمعز

And the man's ma'aza increased, like afriḥa: his ma'aza increased, like am'aza.

قال ابن دريد: استمعز الرجل، إذا جد في الأمر

Ibn Durayd said: The man became serious, when he exerted himself in the matter.

ورجل ممعز، كمعظم: صلب الجلد خلقة

And a muma''az man, like mu'aẓẓam: is tough-skinned by nature.

يقال: معزت المعزى كمنع وضأنت الضأن، أي عزلت هذه من هذه

It is said: The goat was separated as mana'a, and the sheep were separated as ḍa'ana, meaning one was separated from the other.

وأمعز القوم: صاروا في الأمعز

And the people entered the am'az: they became in the am'az.

وقال الأصمعي: عظام الرمل ضوائنه، ولطافه مواعزه، وهو مجاز

And al-Aṣma'ī said: The large dunes are their ḍawā'in, and their soft parts are their mawā'iz, and this is metaphorical.

والمعز ككتف والماعز: الجاد في أمره

And al-ma'z like katuuf and al-mā'iz: is the one who is serious in his affair.

ورجل معز: معصوب الخلق

And a ma'z man: is of strong constitution.

تمتعزوا واخشوشنوا، أي كونوا أشداء صبرا من المعز وهو الشدة

Be tough and hardy, meaning be strong and patient, from al-ma'z which is toughness.

وما أمعز رأيه: إذا كان صلب الرأي

And how firm is his opinion: if he has a firm opinion.

واستمعز في رأيه: صلب وجد
