It is said: He succeeded in good, and he was saved from torment.
Al-fawz also: perishing, and it is an opposite; it is said: he succeeded/perished, he perishes/dies: he died and perished.
He achieved it with success, a success, and a place of success: he triumphed.
And it is said: he succeeded, when he encountered what brings joy, and its interpretation is distancing from the disliked.
He escaped from it with success and a place of escape: he was saved.
And God granted him success with such-and-such: He made him victorious, so he achieved it, meaning He took it with him.
Al-mafaza: the place of salvation. And with this, Abu Ishaq interpreted the Almighty's saying: 'Do not think that they are in a place of escape from the torment,' meaning in a place of salvation from it.
And Al-Farra' said: meaning far from it.
It is said: the origin of al-mafaza is the place of destruction, from al-fawz meaning perishing.
And Ibn Al-A'rabi said: Al-mafaza is named from 'fawz al-rajul' (the man's death), when he dies. And it was said: it was named optimistically for safety, from al-fawz: salvation. And this is the saying of Al-Asma'i, confirmed by Ibn Faris in Al-Mujmal and others. Abu Hayyan denied it in Sharh Al-Tasheel, where he said: The one who is safe from a snakebite, from the snake that bit him: it bit him. Do not look at the saying of one who said it is based on optimism, for a group of scholars erred in that, just as they erred in their saying that al-mafaza was named from al-fawz optimistically. It was only named from 'faza al-insan fawzan' (a person perished with perishing), if he perished.
Al-mafaza: the wilderness, and every desolate place is a mafaza.

And some of them said: if it is two nights without water, it is a mafaza, and what exceeds that is likewise. As for one night and a day, it is not considered a mafaza.
And it was said: Al-mafaza and al-fala, if the distance between two water sources is a quarter day's journey for camels to arrive and a day's rest for other livestock.
And Ibn Al-A'rabi also said: The desert is named mafaza because whoever exits it and crosses it succeeds.
