إذا مهرت صلبا قليلا عراقة ... تقول ألا أديتني فتقرب

If she married off a strong man with little lineage... she says, 'Did you not give me my dowry, so approach?'

أخذن اغتصابا خطبة عجرفية ... وأمهرن أرماحا من الخط ذبلا

They took by force a haughty proposal... and they gave spears as dowry, withered from the الخط.

يضرب للأحمق البالغ في الحمق للغاية، وذلك أن طالبت حمقاء بعلها لما دخل بها بالمهر وقالت: لا أطيعك أو تعطيني مهري.

It is said about an extremely foolish person, because a foolish woman demanded from her husband when he entered her that he give her the dowry, and she said: I will not obey you unless you give me my dowry.

فنزع إحدى خدمتيها من رجلها ودفعها إليها فرضيت بها لحمقها.

So she took off one of her anklets from her leg and gave it to her, and she was satisfied with it due to her foolishness.

والمهيرة، كسفينة: الحرة، والجمع المهائر، وهي الحرائر، وهي ضد السراري

And al-muhayrah, like safinah: the freeborn woman, and the plural is al-mahā'ir, and they are the freeborn women, and they are the opposite of concubines.

والمهيرة أيضا: الغالية المهر.

And al-muhayrah also: one with a high dowry.

والماهر: الحاذق بكل عمل، وأكثر ما يوصف به السابح المجيد

And al-māhir: the skilled in every work, and most often described as an excellent swimmer.

مثل الفراتي إذا ما طما ... يقذف بالبوصي والماهر

Like the Euphrates when it swells... it throws the boatman and the swimmer.

وقد مهر الشيء وفيه وبه، كمنع يمهر مهرا بالفتح ومهورا، بالضم، ومهارا ومهارة، بفتحهما، أي صار حاذقا.

And he became skilled in a thing, and in it, and by it, like man'a, he becomes skilled, a mahr (with fath) and mahūr (with damma), and mahāran and mahārah (with both fath), meaning he became skilled.

والمهارة ومهارة، كسحابة وكتابة.

And mahārah and mahārah, like sahābah and kitābah.

والمهر، بالضم: عظم الزور، وهو الكركرة، كالمهرة

And al-muhr (with damma): the bone of the chest, which is the sternum, like al-muharrah.

المهر: ثمر الحنظل، ج مهرة، كعنبة، نقله الصاغاني.

Al-mahr: the fruit of the colocynth, plural mahrrah (like 'unbah), as transmitted by Al-Saghani.

المهر: ولد الفرس والرمكة، أو أول ما ينتج منه ومن غيره، أي من الخيل والحمر الأهلية وغيرها، كما قاله ابن سيده، ج في القليل أمهار، وفي الكثير مهار ومهارة.

Al-mahr: the offspring of a horse and a hybrid mare, or the first offspring from them and others, meaning from horses, domestic donkeys, and others, as stated by Ibn Sidah, plural in small numbers is amhār, and in large numbers is mahār and mahārah.

يعني بالأمهار هنا أولاد الوحش.

He means by al-amhār here the young of wild animals.

كأن عتيقا من مهارة تغلب ... بأيدي الرجال الدافنين ابن عتاب

As if a fine old wine from Mahārat Taghlib... in the hands of the men burying Ibn 'Utāb.

والأنثى مهرة، والجمع مهرات ومهر.

And the female is a muhrah, and the plural is muharrāt and mahr.

ومجنبات ما يذقن عذوفا ... يقذفن بالمهرات والأمهار

And mares that do not taste fatigue... they throw forth young mares and foals.

والأم ممهر. يقال: فرس ممهر، أي ذات مهر، وقد أمهرت: تبعها مهر.

And the mother is mumahhirah. It is said: a mumahhirah horse, meaning having a foal, and she has become mumahhirah: a foal followed her.

والمهرة، بالضم: خرزة كان النساء يتحببن بها، أو هي فارسية

And al-muhrah (with damma): a bead that women used to adorn themselves with, or it is Persian.

والمهر، كصرد: مفاصل متلاحكة في الصدر، أو هي غراضيف الضلوع، واحدتها مهرة، كأنها فارسية

And al-muhr, like sarad: interlocking joints in the chest, or they are the ribs, the singular is muhrah, as if it were Persian.

عن مهرة الزور وعن رحاها

From the sternum of the chest and its millstone.

ومهرة بن حيدان بن عمرو بن الحاف بن قضاعة، بالفتح أبو قبيلة، وهم حي عظيم، وإليها يرجع كل مهري، منهم أبو الحجاج زبيد بن سعد المهري، من أهل مصر، والإبل المهرية منه، أي من هذا الحي منسوبة إليهم

And Mahrah bin Haydan bin Amr bin Al-Haf bin Quda'ah, with fath, is the father of a tribe, and they are a great clan, and to him belongs every Mahri, including Abu Al-Hajjaj Zubayd bin Sa'd Al-Mahri, from the people of Egypt, and the Mahri camels are from him, meaning attributed to this tribe.

والإبل المهرية منه، أي من هذا الحي منسوبة إليهم، ج مهارى كسكارى، هكذا هو مضبوط في النسخ، وفي اللسان بكسر الراء وتخفيف الياء، ومهار، بحذف الياء، ومهاري، بكسر الراء وتشديد الياء

And the Mahri camels are from him, meaning attributed to this tribe, plural mahārā like sakārā, this is how it is recorded in the manuscripts, and in Al-Lisān with kasra of the ra and light ya, and mahār, with the ya omitted, and mahārī, with kasra of the ra and shadda of the ya.

به تمطت غول كل ميله ... بنا حراجيج المهارى النفه

By it, the ghoul of every inclination stretched itself... carrying us, the sturdy ones of the Mahārā, the proud ones.

وأمهر الناقة: جعلها مهرية.

And he made the she-camel Mahriyyah: he made her Mahriyyah.

والمهرية: حنطة حمراء، قال أبو حنيفة: وكذلك سفاها، وهي عظيمة السنبل غليظة القصب مربعة.

And al-mahiriyyah: red wheat, Abu Hanifa said: and so is its awn, and it has large ears, thick stems, and is square.

وماهر ومهيرة كجهينة: اسمان، وكذا مهير ومهري ومهران بالكسر.

And Māhir and Muhayrah like Juhaynah: two names, and likewise Muhayr, Muhri, and Mahran with kasra.

ومهور، كقسور: ع، قال ابن سيده: وإنما حملناه على فعول دون مفعل، من هار يهور، لأنه لو كان مفعلا منه كان معتلا، ولا يحمل على مكرره، لأن ذلك شاذ للعلمية.

And Mahūr, like qaswar: a place, Ibn Sidah said: We only carried it over to fa'ūl instead of maf'al, from hāra yahūru, because if it were maf'al from it, it would be defective, and it is not carried over to its reduplication, because that is irregular for proper nouns.

وقال السكري: مهور: بلد قال المعطل الهذلي: فإن أمس في أهل الرجيع ودوننا ... جبال السراة مهور فعوائن

And Al-Sukkari said: Mahūr: a place. Al-Mu'attal Al-Hudhali said: If I am in the morning among the people of Al-Rajī', and between us... the mountains of Al-Sirāt, Mahūr and Fa'wā'in.

ونهر مهران، بالكسر: نهر عظيم بالسند وبخراسان يعرف بجيحون ويقال: إنه منهما تمتد الدنيا.

And the river Mihran, with kasra: a great river in Sindh and Khurasan known as the Jaihun, and it is said that the world extends from them.

برا وخاضوا بالسفين الأبحرا ... ما بين مشهران وبين بربرا

On land and they crossed the seas by ships... between Mashharān and between Barbar.

ومهران: ة بأصفهان.

And Mihran: a village in Isfahan.

ومهران جد أبي بكر أحمد بن الحسين الزاهد المقرئ المهراني النيسابوري، مجاب الدعوة، عن ابن خزيمة، وعنه الحاكم، وهو صاحب الغاية والشامل، مات سنة.

And Mihran is the grandfather of Abu Bakr Ahmad bin Al-Husayn Al-Zahid Al-Muqri' Al-Maharani Al-Naysaburi, whose prayers are answered, from Ibn Khuzaymah, and from him Al-Hakim, and he is the author of Al-Ghāyah and Al-Shāmil, died in the year.

والمهار) ككتاب: العود الغليظ في رأسه فلكة، يجعل في أنف البختي.

And Al-Mahār (like kitāb): thick wood with a ring at its head, placed in the nose of a Bactrian camel.

يقال: لم تعط هذا الأمر المهرة، كعنبة، وضبطه الصاغاني بفتح فكسر مجودا، أي لم تأته من قبل وجهه.

It is said: you did not approach this matter properly, like 'unbah, and Al-Saghani recorded it with fath then kasra, meaning you did not approach it from its proper direction.

ويقال أيضا: لم تأت إلى هذا البناء المهرة، أي لم تأته من قبل وجهه ولم تبنه على ما كان ينبغي.

It is also said: you did not approach this construction properly, meaning you did not approach it from its proper direction and did not build it as it should have been.

وقالوا: لم نفعل به المهرة، ولم تعطه المهرة، وذلك إذا عالجت شيئا فلم ترفق به ولم تحسن عمله، وكذلك إذا أدب إنسانا فلم يحسن.

And they said: we did not handle him properly, nor did we give him the proper treatment, and that is when you deal with something without gentleness and without doing it well, and likewise if you discipline someone without doing it well.

والتمهير: طلب المهر واتخاذه.

And Al-Tamhīr: seeking and arranging for a dowry.

أقبل يردي كما يردي الحصان إلى ... مستعسب أرب منه بتمهير

He came charging like a stallion comes to a mare in heat, desiring her with intent.

يقول: أقبل كأنه حصان جاء إلى مستعسب وهو المستطرق لأنثاه، أرب: ذي إربة، أي حاجة.

He says: he came like a stallion came to a mare in heat, meaning seeking her, 'arib: having desire, meaning need.

والمتمهر: الأسد الحاذق بالافتراس، وتمهر الرجل في شيء، إذا حذق فيه، كمهر فيه.

And Al-Mutamahhir: the lion skilled in hunting, and a man becomes tamahhar in something, if he becomes skilled in it, like mahara in it.

والمهيرة: مصغرا، كناية عن الزوجة، وبه فسر قول الحريري في الحضرمية: تذهب في الدويرة، لتجلد عميرة، وتستغني عن المهيرة.

And al-muhayrah: diminutive, a metaphor for the wife, and with this the saying of Al-Hariri in Al-Hadramiyyah is explained: she goes into the small enclosure, to beat 'Umayrah, and to be independent of the wife.

ومهر البغي المنهي عنه هو أجرة الفاجرة.

And the prohibited dowry of a prostitute is the fee of the fornicatress.

وأم أمهار: اسم قارة. وفي التهذيب هضبة. وقال ابن جبلة: أكم حمر بأعلى الصمان، ولعلها شبهت بأمهار الخيل فسميت بذلك.

And Umm Amhār: the name of a plateau. In Al-Tahdhib, a hill. Ibn Jabalah said: red hills in the upper part of Al-Summan, and perhaps they were likened to the young of horses and thus named.

مرت على أم أمهار مشمرة ... تهوي بها طرق أوساطها زور

She passed by Umm Amhār, striding... the paths in her middle parts leading her down.

وقال الفراء: تحت القلب عظيم يقال له: المهر والزر، وهو قوام القلب.

And Al-Farra' said: Beneath the heart is a large organ called: Al-Mihr and Al-Zirr, and it is the core of the heart.

والمهر، بالضم: فراخ حمام يشبه الورشان، وجمعها: مهرة كعنبة، قاله الصاغاني.

And al-muhr (with damma): young pigeons resembling sandgrouse, and their plural is muhrah (like 'unbah), as stated by Al-Saghani.

وتسمى النعجة: الماهر، وتدعى فيقال: ماهر ماهر.

And the ewe is called: Al-Māhir, and she is called saying: Māhir Māhir.

And Mihyār Al-Daylami, like mihrab: the poet of his time.

وجناب بن مهير العبدي كزبير عن عطاء، ومحمد وعلوان، ابنا مفلح بن المهير، وابن أخيهما مقلد ابن علي بن مفلح بن المهير، كلهم عن أبي الحسن بن العلاف، وروى عنهم ابن سويد في مشيخته.

And Janab bin Muhayr Al-Abdi, like Zubayr, from 'Ata', and Muhammad and 'Ilwan, sons of Muflih bin Al-Muhayr, and their nephew Muqallad bin Ali bin Muflih bin Al-Muhayr, all from Abu Al-Hasan bin Al-'Allaf, and Ibn Suwayd narrated from them in his Musnad.

وعز الدين الحسن بن الحسين بن المهير البغدادي، سمع يحيى بن بوش، ومات سنة.

And Izz Al-Din Al-Hasan bin Al-Husayn bin Al-Muhayr Al-Baghdadi, he heard Yahya bin Bush, and died in the year.

ومُهَيِّر عم سعيد بن عروبة، قاله قتادة، كذا في كتاب الصحابة لأبي القاسم البغوي.

And Muhayr is the uncle of Sa'id bin 'Urūbah, Qatadah said, as is in the Book of Companions by Abu Al-Qasim Al-Baghawi.

ومُهَيْرَة: لقب محرز بن نضلة الصحابي.

And Muhayrah: the nickname of Mahraz bin Nadlah the companion.

وماهر بن عبد الله بن نجم المقدسي، حدث عن الزين العراقي، والشرف يحيى المناوي وغيرهما، أجاز شيخ الإسلام زكريا وكريم الدين أبا الفضل محمد بن محمد بن العماد البلبيسي، وغيرهما.

And Māhir bin Abdullah bin Najm Al-Maqdisi, narrated from Al-Zayn Al-'Iraqi, and Al-Sharaf Yahya Al-Manawi and others, he was permitted by Shaykh Al-Islam Zakariyya and Karim Al-Din Abu Al-Fadl Muhammad bin Muhammad bin Al-'Imad Al-Bilbaisi, and others.
