And al-makrah, with fatḥah: a beautiful greenish plant that grows moderately, as if it has sourness when chewed. It grows in plains and sand, has leaves but no flowers. Plural: makr and mukūr, the latter with dammah. It is named thus because of its succulence and the effectiveness of watering it.

He seeks sustenance in thorny plants and in mukawwar (a type of tree).

تعاطى فراخ المكر طورا وتارة ... تثير رخاماها وتعلق ضالها

Sometimes it reaches for the young of the mukr tree, and at other times... it stirs its soft parts and clings to its stray branches.

فراخ المكر: ثمره، وقال ابن الأعرابي: المكرة الرطبة الفاسدة.

Farākh al-mkr: its fruit. And Ibn al-Aʿrābī said: Al-makrah is the moist, spoiled thing.

المكرة: الرطبة التي قد أرطبت كلها، وهي مع ذلك صلبة لم تنهضم، عن أبي حنيفة، والمكرة أيضا: البسرة المرطبة، وهي مع ذلك صلبة ولا حلاوة لها.

Al-makrah: the moist thing that has become entirely moist, and is yet firm and not digested, from Abū Ḥanīfah. And al-makrah also: the moist date-fruit, which is also firm and has no sweetness.

ونخلة ممكار: تكثر من ذلك، والأولى: يكثر ذلك من بسرها.

And a palm tree that is mimkār: produces much of that. And the first meaning: much of that is produced from its unripe dates.

والممكور: الأسد المتلطخ بدماء الفرائس كأنه مكر مكرا، أي صبغ بالمكر، أي طلي بالمغرة، قاله ابن بري.

And al-mamkūr: the lion smeared with the blood of prey, as if it was dyed with mkr, meaning dyed with ochre, said Ibn Barrī.

والممكورة: المطوية الخلق من النساء، وقد مكرت مكرا، قاله ابن القطاع.

And al-mamkūrah: the compactly formed woman, and she had a compact build (makarat), said Ibn al-Qaṭṭāʿ.

وقيل: هي المستديرة الساقين أو المدمجة الخلق الشديدة البضعة، قاله ابن سيده، وقيل: ممكورة: مرتوية الساق خدلة، شبهت بالمكر من النبات.

And it was said: she is round-legged or compactly formed and very fleshy. Said Ibn Sīdah. And it was said: mamkūrah: having moist, plump legs, likened to the succulence of plants.

مكر كفرح: احمر، مثل مغر. يقال: أمغر أمكر.

Mkr like fariḥa: became red, like maghra. It is said: amghara amkara (he became red).

And al-tamkīr: hoarding grain in houses, transmitted by al-Ṣāghānī.

وامتكر: اختضب، وقد مكره فامتكر، أي خضبه فاختضب، قال القطامي:

And amtakara: he dyed himself. And he dyed him, so he dyed himself, meaning he dyed him, and he dyed himself. Said al-Quṭāmī:

بضرب تهلك الأبطال منه ... وتمتكر اللحى منه امتكارا

With blows that destroy heroes... and the beards become dyed with it (amtekāran).

أي تختضب، شبه حمرة الدم بالمغرة، قاله ابن بري.

Meaning they dye themselves, likening the redness of blood to ochre, said Ibn Barrī.

وامتكر الحب: حرثه، قاله الصاغاني.

And amtakara al-ḥabb: he plowed the grain (land), said al-Ṣāghānī.

ومكران، كسحبان، وضبطه ياقوت كعثمان: دم، قال: وأكثر ما يجيء في شعر العرب مشدد الكاف، واشتقاقها في العربية أن تكون جمع ماكر، كفارس وفرسان، ويجوز أن يكون جمع مكر، مثل بطن وبطنان.

And Makrān, like saḥbān, and Yaqūt vocalized it like ʿuthmān: blood. He said: And it most often appears in Arabic poetry with a shaddah on the kāf. Its derivation in Arabic is that it is a plural of mākir, like fāris and fārisān, and it may be a plural of makr, like baṭn and baṭnān.

وقال حمزة: أصله ماه كران، أضيفت إلى القمر، لأن القمر هو المؤثر في الخصب، فكل مدينة ذات خصب أضيفت إليه ثم اختصروه فقالوا: مكران.

And Ḥamzah said: Its origin is Māh-Kurān, added to the moon, because the moon is the influencer of fertility. So every fertile city was attributed to it, then they shortened it and said: Makrān.

ومكران: اسم لسيف البحر.

And Makrān: a name for the Sword of the Sea.

سميت بمكران بن فارك بن سام بن نوح أخي كرمان، لأنه نزلها واستوطنها، وهي ولاية واسعة مشتملة على قرى ومدائن، وهي معدن الفانيذ، ومنها ينقل إلى جميع البلدان.

It was named after Makrān ibn Fārk ibn Sām ibn Nūḥ, brother of Kirmān, because he settled there and made it his home. It is a vast province comprising villages and cities, and it is a source of tin, from which it is transported to all countries.

والغالب عليها المفاوز والضر والقحط.

And prevailing over it are deserts, hardship, and drought.

أمكر الله تعالى إمكارا، لغة في مكر، قاله ابن القطاع.

God Almighty granted respite (amkara) with respite (imkāran), a linguistic variant of 'mkr', said Ibn al-Qaṭṭāʿ.
