And in the hadith of 'Umar, may God be pleased with him, that al-'Abbas ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib asked him about the poets, and he said: 'Imru' al-Qays is their leader, he dug out the essence of poetry for them, and 'iftaqara' from obscure meanings, making them clearer. He means he was the first to open up the craft of poetry and diversify its meanings, increase them, and intend them, and poets followed his example.
وافتقر: افتعل، من الفقير، أي شق وفتح وهو مجاز كما في التكملة واللسان
And 'iftaqara': it is 'ifta'ala', from 'al-faqir', meaning to split and open, and it is a metaphor as in al-Takmilah and al-Lisan.
ورجل متفاقر: يدعى الفقر، كما في الأساس
And a 'mutafaqir' man: one who claims poverty, as in al-Asas.
قال ابن الأثير: هكذا جاء في رواية، أي يستخرجون غامضه ويفتحون مغلقه، وأصله من فقرت البئر، إذا حفرتها لاستخراج مائها
Ibn al-Athir said: 'This is how it came in one narration, meaning they extract its hidden parts and open its closed ones, and its origin is from 'faqartu al-bi'r', when you dig a well to extract its water.
والفقرة، بالضم: قرمة البعير رواه أبو العباس عن ابن الأعرابي
And 'al-fiqrah', with damma: the hump of a camel, narrated by Abu al-'Abbas from Ibn al-A'rabi.
