And al-Faghār, like shaddād, and Ibn Durayd limited it to this form, or like ghurāb: is the title of Hubaírah ibn al-Nu'mān, a horseman, and he was named by a verse that Hajar al-Ju'fī said about him:
(فَغَرْتُ لَدَى النُّعْمَانِ لَمَّا رَأَيْتُهُ ... كَمَا فَغَرَتْ لِلْحَيْضِ شَمْطَاءُ عَارِكُ)
'I opened wide before al-Nu'mān when I saw him... like a grizzled, old woman opens wide for menstruation'.
وَالْفَاغِرُ: دُوَيْبَّةٌ أَبْرَقُ الأَنْفِ، يَلْكَعُ النَّاسَ، صِفَةٌ غَالِبَةٌ، كَالْغَارِبِ، وَدُوَيْبَّةٌ أُخْرَى لَا تَزَالُ فَاغِرَةً فَاها، يُقَالُ لَهَا الْفَاغِرُ.
And al-Fāghir: a small animal with a dark nose, which bothers people, a dominant description, like al-Ghārib, and another small animal that always keeps its mouth open, called al-Fāghir.
وَالْفَاغِرَةُ، بِهَاءٍ: طِيبٌ، أَيْ نَوْعٌ مِنْهُ، أَوْ الْكَبَابَةُ الصِّينِيُّ، فَإِنَّهُ إِذَا لَاكَهُ الإِنْسَانُ فَغَرَ فَاهُ، أَوْ أُصُولُ النِّيلُوفَرِ الْهِنْدِيِّ.
And al-Fāghirah, with ḥā': is a perfume, meaning a type of it, or Chinese cinnamon, because when a person chews it, it opens their mouth, or the roots of the Indian lotus.
وَيُقَالُ: وُلِدَ فُلَانٌ بِالْفَغْرَةِ، بِالْفَتْحِ، أَيْ عِنْدَ إِفْغَارِ النَّجْمِ، وَهُوَ أَوَّلُ طُلُوعِ الثُّرَيَّا، وَذَلِكَ فِي الشِّتَاءِ، لِأَنَّ الثُّرَيَّا إِذَا كَبَدَتِ السَّمَاءَ، مَنْ نَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ فَغَرَ فَاهُ، أَيْ فَتَحَهُ.
And it is said: 'So-and-so was born at al-Faghrah, with the fatḥah, meaning at the time of the star's rising, which is the first appearance of the Pleiades, and that is in winter, because when the Pleiades are at the zenith of the sky, whoever looks at it opens their mouth wide, meaning they open it'.
وَفِي التَّهْذِيبِ: أَفْغَرَ النَّجْمُ، وَهُوَ الثُّرَيَّا، إِذَا حَلَّقَ فَصَارَ عَلَى قِمَّةِ رَأْسِكَ، فَمَنْ نَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ فَغَرَ فَاهُ.
And in al-Tahdhīb: 'The star, which is the Pleiades, became high, meaning it reached the zenith of your head, so whoever looks at it opens their mouth'.
وَالْفَغْرَةُ، بِالضَّمِّ: فَمُ الْوَادِي، ج فَغْرٌ، كَصِرْدٍ، قَالَ عَدِيُّ بْنُ زَيْدٍ:
And al-Faghrah, with the ḍammah: is the mouth of the valley, its plural is faghr, like ṣird, 'Adī ibn Zayd said:
(كَالْبِيضِ فِي الرَّوْضِ الْمُنَوَّرِ قَدْ ... أَفْضَى إِلَيْهِ إِلَى الْكَثِيبِ فَغْرُ)
'Like eggs in the illuminated meadow, the opening has reached it, to the sand dune'.
وَطَعْنَةٌ فَغَارٌ، كَقَطَامٍ: نَافِذَةٌ، نَقَلَهُ الصَّاغَانِيُّ.
And a faghar wound, like qaṭām: is penetrating, as narrated by al-Ṣāghānī.
وَفُغِرَتِ السِّنُّ، إِذَا طَلَعَتْ.
And the tooth emerged, meaning it appeared.
وَقِيلَ: فَاؤُهُ مَبْدَلَةٌ مِنَ الثَّاءِ.
And it is said: its 'fā' is a substitution for 'thā'.
