مكث وبقي.
He stayed and remained.
ذهب ومضى.
He went and passed away.
وهو غابر من قوم غبر كركع.
And he is a survivor from a people who have survived, like those who prostrate.
وهو غابر من الليل: ما بقي منه.
And the remainder of the night: what is left of it.
ويقال: هو غابر بني فلان، أي بقيتهم.
And it is said: he is the survivor of so-and-so's family, meaning their remnant.
أنا عبيد الله ينميني عمر ... خير قريش من مضضى ومن غبر
I am Ubayd Allah, Umar is my lineage... the best of Quraysh from those who have passed and those who remain.
ويقال: أنت غابر غدا، وذكرك غابر أبدا.
And it is said: you will be a survivor tomorrow, and your memory will be everlasting.
وبقيته، كغبره، بتشديد الموحدة المفتوحة، ج الغبر أغبار، كقفل وأقفال، وجمع الغبر غبرات، وقد غلب ذلك على بقية دم الحيض، وعلى بقية اللبن في الضرع
Its remainder, like its residue, with a doubled open 'b', plural 'al-ghubr' like 'qufl' and 'aqfal', and the plural of 'al-ghubr' is 'ghabarat', and this has come to mean the remainder of menstrual blood, and the remainder of milk in the udder.
لا تكسع الشول بأغبارها ... إنك لا تدرى من الناتج
Do not drive away the weak camels with their remnants... for you do not know who will be born.
وبها غبر من لبن، أي بالناقة.
And she has a remnant of milk, meaning in the she-camel.
ومبرأ من كل غبر حيضة ... وفساد مرضعة وداء مغيل
And free from every remnant of menstruation... and the corruption of a wet nurse and a debilitating disease.
وكذلك غبر الليل.
And likewise the remnants of the night.
بفنائه أعنز درهن غبر أي قليل.
In his courtyard were goats with sparse milk, meaning few.
غابره نجس، أي باقيه.
Its remainder is impure, meaning what is left of it.
اعتكف العشر الغوابر من شهر رمضان أي البواقي، جمع غابر.
He performed the I'tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan, meaning the remaining ones, plural of 'ghabir'.
فلم يبق إلا غبرات من أهل الكتاب.
And nothing remained but remnants of the People of the Book.
ما تأبطتني الإماء ولا حملتني البغايا في غبرات المآلي، أراد أنه لم تتول الإماء تربيته.
The slave women did not carry me on their shoulders, nor did the prostitutes carry me in the remnants of their menstrual cloths, meaning the slave women did not raise him.
عض بما أبقى المواسي له ... من أمه في الزمن الغابر
He bit with what the healers left for him... from his mother in the past time.
والمغبار: ناقة تغزر بعد ما تغزر اللواتي ينتجن معها
And 'al-maghbar': a camel that produces milk after those who have given birth with her have produced.
داهية الدهر وصماء الغبر
The calamity of the age and the impenetrable danger.
إنه لداهية الغبر.
Indeed, he is a profound calamity.
جرح غبر.
A festering wound.
وأنجاه من الهلاك بعد إشراف عليه.
And saved him from destruction after he was on the verge of it.
ما غبرت إلا لطلب المراء.
I did not linger except to seek argument.
الغبر: التراب عن كراع.
Al-ghabr: dust, according to Kra'a.
وهو اسم لما يبقى من التراب المثار، جعل على بناء الدخان والعثان ونحوهما من البقايا، قاله المصنف في البصائر.
And it is a name for what remains of stirred-up dust, constructed like smoke and haze and similar remnants, as stated by the author in Al-Basair.
الغبرة: تردد الرهج، فإذا ثار سمى غبارا، كالغبرة، بالضم، أنشد ابن الأعرابي:
Al-ghabarah: the swirling of dust; when it rises, it is called 'ghubar', like 'al-ghabarah', with dammah, Ibn al-A'rabi recited:
بعيني لم تستأنسا يوم غبرة ... ولم تردا أرض العراق فثرمدا
My eyes did not become accustomed on a dusty day... nor did they visit the land of Iraq and Tharmada.
واغبر اليوم اغبرارا: اشتد غباره، عن أبي علي.
And the day became dusty ('aghbarra aghbiraran'): its dust intensified, according to Abu Ali.
وغبره تغبيرا: لطخه به.
And he smeared it ('ghabbara-hu taghbir'): he smeared it with it.
وتغبر: تلطخ به.
And he became dusty ('taghabbara'): he got smeared with it.
والغبراء: الأرض، لغبرة لونها، أو لما فيها من الغبار.
And 'al-Gharbaa': the earth, due to its dusty color, or due to the dust in it.
ما أظلت الخضراء ولا أقلت الغبراء ذا لهجة أصدق من أبي ذر.
Neither the green (sky) shaded nor the dusty (earth) carried a more truthful speaker than Abu Dharr.
والغبراء: أنثى الحجل.
And 'al-Gharbaa': the female partridge.
وأرض غبراء: كثيرة الشجر، كالغبرة، محركة.
And a dusty land ('ardun ghabraa'): with abundant trees, like 'al-ghabarah', with harakah.
والغبراء: النبت في السهولة، نقله الصاغاني.
And 'al-Gharbaa': vegetation in the lowlands, as transmitted by Al-Sagani.
والوطأة الغبراء: الجديدة أو الدارسة، وهو مثل الوطأة السوداء.
And the dusty footprint ('al-wat'ah al-ghabraa'): new or old, and it is like the black footprint.
سميت سنو الجدب غبرا لاغبرار آفاقها من قلة الأمطار، وأرضها من عدم النبات.
The years of drought were named 'ghubran' due to the dustiness of their horizons from lack of rain, and their land from lack of vegetation.
رأيت بني غبراء لا ينكرونني ... ولا أهل هذاك الطراف الممدد
I saw the children of the dusty ones, they did not deny me... nor the people of that extended tent.
وبنو غبراء فيها ... يتعاطون الصحافا
And the children of the dusty ones are in it... passing the bowls.
إياكم والغبيراء فإنها خمر العالم وهي السكركة، وهي شراب يعمل من الذرة يتخذه الحبش، وهو يسكر.
Beware of 'al-ghubayraa', for it is the wine of the world and it is 'al-sukkarah', a drink made from corn that the Abyssinians make, and it is intoxicating.
تركه على غبيراء الظهر وغبرائه، إذا رجع خائبا
He left him on the dusty back ('ghubayraa' al-dhahr) and its dust, if he returned disappointed.
جاء على غبيراء الظهر، كأنه رجع وعلى ظهره غبار الأرض.
He came on the dusty back ('ghubayraa' al-dhahr), as if he returned with the dust of the earth on his back.
إذا رجع ولم يقدر على حاجته، قيل: جاء على غبيراء الظهر
If he returned and could not get his need, it was said: he came on the dusty back ('ghubayraa' al-dhahr).
إذا خاصمت رجلا فخصمته في كل شئ وغلبته على ما في يديه.
If you dispute with a man and defeat him in everything and overcome what is in his hands.
الغبر، بالكسر: الحقد، كالغمر.
Al-ghabr, with kasr: hatred, like 'al-ghamr'.
إذا اندمل على فساد ثم انتفض بعد البرء، ومنه سمى العرق الغبر، لأنه لا يزال ينتقض، وهو بالفارسية الناسور.
If it healed with corruption and then flared up after healing, and from this the persistent ulcer is named 'al-ghabr', because it keeps flaring up, and in Persian it is 'nasur'.
فهو لا يبرأ ما في صدره ... مثل مالا يبرأ العرق الغبر
So what is in his chest does not heal... like the persistent ulcer that does not heal.
عمل كالظهر الدبر، وقلب كالجرح الغبر.
Work like a healed-over sore, and a heart like a festering wound.
غبر الجرح غبرا: انتقض أبدا، والجرح: اندمل على نغل.
The wound festered ('ghabira al-jarh ghabran'): it constantly relapsed, and the wound: healed with a hidden infection.
الغبر: أن يبرأ ظاهر الجرح وباطنه دو.
Al-ghabr: that the outside of the wound heals but the inside remains diseased.
الغبر: داء في باطشن خف البعير، وقال المفضل: هو من الغبرة.
Al-ghabr: a disease in the lower part of a camel's leg, and Al-Mufaddal said: it is from 'al-ghabarah'.
الغضبر: ع بسلمى، أحد محالها، وسضلمى لطيي أحد الجبلين، فيه مياه قليلة.
Al-Ghadbar: a place in Salma, one of its locations, and Salma is for Tayy, one of the two mountains, with little water.
ويقال للماء القليل غبر، قيل: وبه سمي الموضع
And a small amount of water is called 'ghabr', it is said: and from this the place was named.
الغبر والغوبر: جنس من السمك، نقله الصاغاني.
Al-ghabr and al-ghuabir: a type of fish, as transmitted by Al-Sagani.
الغبارة: ماءة لبني عبس بن ذبيان ببطن الرمة هكذا نقله الصاغاني.
Al-Ghubarah: a water source of Banu Abs bin Dhibyan in the valley of Al-Rummah, as transmitted by Al-Sagani.
والغبراء: من قرى اليمامة، فتأمل.
And 'Al-Gharbaa': is from the villages of Al-Yamamah, so ponder.
