And a man 'aTr, like 'kutf', and a woman 'aTirah, mi'Taarah, mu'aTTarah, and muta'aTTirah, and both are mu'Tiir and mi'Taar: they take care of themselves with perfume and use it abundantly.

ومعطار ومعطارة، إذا كان من عادتها، قال: (علق خودا طفلة معطاره ... إياك أعني فاسمعي يا جاره)

And mi'Taar and mi'Taarah, if it was her habit, he said: (She clung to a young maiden, perfumed... It is you I mean, so listen, O neighbor)

وقيل: رجل عطر، وامرأة عطرة: إذا كانا طيبي ريح الجرم، وإن لم يتعطرا.

وناقة معطير: حمراء طيبة العرف، هكذا في النسخ بالفاء، وفي اللسان وغيره: العرق، بالقاف محركة، أنشد أبو حنيفة: كوماء معطير كلون البهرم.

And a she-camel mu'Tiir: red, pleasant smelling. Thus in the copies with 'fa', and in al-Lisan and elsewhere: al-'irq, with a harakat 'qaf'. Abu Hanifa recited: A tall she-camel, mu'Tiir, like the color of the safflower.

وناقة عطارة، بالتشديد، وعطرة، كفرحة، ومعطارة وتاجرة: نافقة في السوق تبيع نفسها لحسنها، أو ناقة عطرة ومعطارة ومعطرة ومعطار وعرمس، أي كريمة.

And a she-camel 'aTTarah, with shadda, and 'aTirah, like 'farihah', and mi'Taarah and taajirah: desirable in the market, selling herself for her beauty, or a she-camel 'aTirah, mi'Taarah, mu'aTTarah, mi'Taar, and 'armaas, meaning noble.

وصالغ معطرة كبراهما.

And the elder of them, saaligh mu'aTTarah.

قال: معطرة: هي الحمراء.

He said: mu'aTTarah: it is the red one.

قال عمرو: مأخوذ من العطر، وجعل الأخرى ظل حجر لأنها سوداء.

Amr said: taken from perfume, and he made the other 'shadow of a stone' because it was black.

وقال أبو عمرو: تعطرت المرأة وتأطرت: أقامت عند، وفي اللسان والتكملة: في بيت أبويها ولم تتزوج.

And Abu Amr said: ta'aTTarat al-mar'ah and ta'aTTarat: she stayed with, and in al-Lisan and al-Takmilah: in her parents' house and did not marry.

كان صلى الله عليه وسلم يكره تعطر النساء وتشبههن بالرجال: أراد العطر الذي تظهر ريحه كما يظهر عطر الرجال.

The Prophet, peace be upon him, disliked women applying perfume and resembling men: he meant the perfume whose scent is apparent, just as men's perfume is apparent.

وقيل: أي تعطلهن من الحلي والخضاب، وهو إبدال، واللام والراء يتعاقبان، كما يقال: سمل عينه وسمرها، كأنه كره أن تكون المرأة عطلا، لا حلى عليها.

And it was said: meaning their being unoccupied by adornments and makeup, and it is an exchange, and 'lam' and 'ra' alternate, as it is said: samala 'aynahu and samarahu, as if he disliked the woman being 'uTlah, without adornment.

And it is said: my stomach is 'iTari, thus in all copies, and what is in the major lexicons: a'Tiri and sa'iri fa-dhari

والمطرة: الكثيرة السواك.

And al-muTTarah: one who uses the siwak frequently.

واستعطرت المرأة: استعملت العطر، وهو الطيب.

And the woman 'ista'Tarate: she used perfume, which is the fragrance.

وعندي أعطر العرب، أي أطيبها عطرا.

And with me is the most fragrant of the Arabs, meaning the most pleasant in scent.

ومررت بنسوة معاطير وعطرات.

And I passed by women who were fragrant and perfumed.

ورجل عطار: ماهر في العطارة، قاله الزمخشري.

And a man 'aTTar: skilled in perfumery, said al-Zamakhshari.
