أي لتنصروه بالسيف: وعزرتموهم عظمتموهم.

وذلك لأن العزر في اللغة الرد والمنع، وتأويل: عزرت فلانا، أي أدبته، إنما تأويله فعلت به ما يردعه عن القبيح

And التعزير in the speech of the Arabs: is veneration, and support by tongue and sword.

والعزر عن الشيء كالضرب: المنع والرد، وهذا أصل معناه.

And العزر from something, like striking: is prevention and rejection, and this is its original meaning.

ومن نصرته فقد رددت عنه أعداءه ومنعتهم من أذاه ولهذا قيل للتأديب الذي دون الحد: تعزير، لأنه يمنع الجاني أن يعاود الذنب.

And whoever you support, you have repelled his enemies from him and prevented them from harming him. For this reason, discipline less than the legal limit is called تعزير, because it prevents the perpetrator from repeating the sin.
