وجآء المعذرون من الاعراب ليؤذن لهم
And the excuse-makers from the desert dwellers came to be permitted [to stay behind].
المعتذرون: الذين لهم عذر
The excuse-makers: those who have an excuse.
المعذرون في الأصل المعتذرون، فأدغمت التاء في الذال؛ لقرب المخرجين
Al-Mu'adhirun in origin are al-Mu'tadhirun, so the 'ta' was assimilated into the 'dhal' due to the proximity of their articulation points.
ويجوز في كلام العرب المعذرون، بكسر العين المهملة لأن الأصل المعتذرون، فأسكنت التاء، وأبدل منها ذال، وأدغمت في الذال
And it is permissible in Arabic speech to say al-Mu'adhirun, with a kasra on the 'ayn, because the origin is al-Mu'tadhirun, so the 'ta' was made silent, replaced by a 'dhal', and assimilated into the 'dhal'.
ويجوز أن يكون المعذرون الذين يعذرون، يوهمون أن لهم عذرا ولا عذر لهم
And it is permissible that al-Mu'adhirun means those who make excuses, implying they have an excuse when they do not.
إذا كان المعذرون من عذر الرجل فهو معذر، فهم لا عذر لهم
If al-Mu'adhirun is derived from 'a man made an excuse', then he is a mu'dhir, meaning they have no excuse.
إذا كان المعذرون أصله المعتذرون، فألقيت فتحة التاء على العين، وأبدل منها ذال، وأدغمت في الذال التي بعدها، فلهم عذر
If al-Mu'adhirun's origin is al-Mu'tadhirun, then the fatḥa of the 'ta' was transferred to the 'ayn, it was replaced by a 'dhal', and assimilated into the following 'dhal', then they have an excuse.
معناه: المعتذرون، يقال: عذر يعذر عذارا، في معنى اعتذر
Its meaning is: al-Mu'tadhirun. It is said: 'adhara yu'dhiru 'adhāran, in the meaning of 'i'tadhara'.
وقد يكون المعذر بالتشديد غير محق، وهم الذين يعتذرون بلا عذر
And al-Mu'adhir, with shadda, can be one who is not truthful, meaning those who make excuses without an excuse.
المعنى: المقصرون بغير عذر
The meaning: the negligent ones without an excuse.
وقرأ ها ابن عباس، رضي الله عنهما: المعذرون بالتخفيف
And Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, recited it as: al-Mu'adhirun, with taḥfīf (lightening).
من أعذر يعذر إعذارا، وكان يقول: والله لهكذا أنزلت
From 'a'dhara yu'dhiru 'i'dhāran, and he used to say: 'By Allah, it was revealed for this reason'.
لعن الله المعذرين بالتشديد
May Allah curse the mu'adhirun (those who make excuses without cause).
كأن المعذر عنده إنما هو غير المحق وهو المظهر للعذر اعتلالا من غير حقيقة له في العذر
It is as if, in his view, al-Mu'adhir is only the untruthful one, who displays an excuse as a pretext without any reality to the excuse.
وبالتخفيف من له عذر
And with taḥfīf (lightening), it refers to one who has an excuse.
المعذر: الذي له عذر، والمعذر: الذي يعتذر ولا عذر له
Al-Mu'adhir: he who has an excuse, and al-Mu'adhir: he who makes an excuse and has no excuse.
جاء قوم فعذروا، وجلح آخرون فقعدوا
Some people came and made excuses, while others were hindered and stayed behind.
أعذر فلان، أي كان منه ما يعذر به
So-and-so made an excuse, meaning there was something from him that excused him.
أعذر إعذارا، بمعنى اعتذر اعتذارا يعذر به، وصار ذا عذر
'A'dhara 'i'dhāran, meaning 'i'tadhara 'i'tidhāran by which he is excused, and he became one with an excuse.
فقوما فقولا بالذي قد علمتما ولا تخمشا وجها ولا تحلقا الشعر وقولا هو المرء الذي لا خليله أضاع ولا خان الصديق ولا غدر إلى الحول ثم اسم السلام عليكما ومن يبك حولا كاملا فقد اعتذر
So stand up and say what you know, and do not scratch your faces or shave your hair, and say: He is the man who neither abandoned his companion, nor betrayed his friend, nor broke faith. After a year, then peace be upon you. And whoever weeps for a full year has indeed made an excuse.
أي: أتى بعذر، فجعل الاعتذار بمعنى الإعذار، والمعتذر يكون محقا، ويكون غير محق
Meaning: he brought an excuse, so 'i'tidhār was made synonymous with 'i'dhār, and the 'mu'tadhir' can be truthful or untruthful.
اعتذر الرجل، إذا أتى بعذر، واعتذر: إذا لم يأت بعذر
A man 'i'tadhara, if he brought an excuse, and 'i'tadhara: if he did not bring an excuse.
عذره: قبل عذره
'Adharahu: He accepted his excuse.
تعذر: تنصل
Ta'adhdhara: To excuse oneself, to disclaim responsibility.
فإنك منها والتعذر بعدما لججت وشطت من فطيمة دارها
For you are from it, and making excuses after you have plunged into difficulties and strayed from the home of Fatimah.
التعذير: التقصير، يقال: قام فلان قيام تعذير فيما استكفيته، إذا لم يبالغ وقصر فيما اعتمد عليه
Al-Ta'dhīr: Falling short. It is said: So-and-so performed a performance of ta'dhīr in what was entrusted to him, meaning he did not exert himself fully and fell short in what he relied upon.
إن بني إسرائيل كانوا إذا عمل فيهم بالمعاصي نهاهم أحبارهم تعذيرا، فعمهم الله بالعقاب
The Children of Israel, when sins were committed among them, their rabbis would admonish them with ta'dhīr, so Allah encompassed them with punishment.
وذلك إذ لم يبالغوا في نهيهم عن المعاصي وداهنوهم ولم ينكروا أعمالهم بالمعاصي حق الإنكار، أي نهوهم نهيا قصروا فيه ولم يبالغوا
And that was because they did not exert themselves fully in forbidding them from sins, and they appeased them and did not truly condemn their sinful actions, meaning they admonished them with an admonition in which they fell short and did not exert themselves.
وتعاطى ما نهيت عنه تعذيرا
And he engaged in what you forbade, with ta'dhīr (falling short).
تعذرت إلى الرجل تعذرا، في معنى اعتذرت اعتذارا
I made excuses to the man with ta'adhdhuran, in the meaning of 'i'tadhartu 'i'tidhāran.
فلم يلف من نعمائه يتعذر
So he did not find himself needing to make excuses for his blessings.
ويجوز أن يكون معنى قوله: (يتعذر) أي يذهب عنها
And it is permissible that the meaning of his saying (yata'adhdharu) is to go away from it.
وعذرته من فلان، أي لمت فلانا ولم ألمه
And I 'adhartuhu from so-and-so, meaning I blamed so-and-so and did not excuse him.
وعذيرك إياي منه، أي هلم معذرتك إياي
And your 'udhīruk to me from him, meaning bring your excuse for me.
فاستعذر رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلممن عبد الله بن أبي
So the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, sought an excuse from Abdullah bin Ubay.
أي قال: من عذيري منه، وطلب من الناس العذر أن يبطش به
Meaning he said: Who will excuse me from him? And he asked the people for an excuse to strike him.
استعذر أبا بكر من عائشة، كان عتب عليها في شيء، فقال لأبي بكر: أعذرني منها إن أدبتها
He sought an excuse from Abu Bakr concerning Aisha; he was displeased with her about something, so he said to Abu Bakr: 'Excuse me from her if I discipline her'.
أي قم بعذري في ذالك
Meaning: Stand in my place to excuse me in that.
أعذر فلان من نفسه، أي أتي من قبل نفسه
So-and-so made an excuse for himself, meaning it came from himself.
وتعذر عليه الأمر: لم يستقم
And the matter became difficult for him: it did not go smoothly.
وتعذر عليه الأمر، إذا صعب وتعسر
And the matter became difficult for him, if it became hard and arduous.
أنه كان يتعذر في مرضه
That he was making excuses (or struggling) in his illness.
والعذار، بكسر العين: الامتناع، من التعذر
And al-'idhār, with a kasra on the 'ayn: Refusal, from ta'adhdhara.
فإني إذا ما خلة رث وصلها وجدت لصرم واستمر عذارها
For indeed, when the connection of a friendship becomes weak, I find a refusal and its continuity becomes firm.
والعاذورة: سمة كالخط، والجمع العواذير
And al-'ādhūrah: A brand like a line, and the plural is al-'awādhīr.
ذو حلق تقضي العواذير بينه يلوح بأخطار عظام اللقائح
One with a throat that the brands between them indicate great dangers of the mares.
عذر عني بعيرك، أي سمه بغير سمة بعيري، لتتعارف إبلنا
Let your camel be branded for me, meaning brand it with a brand other than mine, so that our camels may be recognized.
وعذارا الحائط: جانباه، وعذارا الوادي: عدوتاه
And 'adhārā of the wall: its sides, and 'adhārā of the valley: its two banks.
واتخذ فلان في كرمه عذارا من الشجر، أي سكة مصطفة
And so-and-so made an 'adhāran of trees in his vineyard, meaning a lined path.
ما أنت بذي عذر هاذا الكلام، أي لست بأول من افتضه
You are not one who has an excuse for this speech, meaning you are not the first to break its silence.
وكذالك فلان أبو عذر هاذا الكلام
And likewise, so-and-so is the father of the excuse for this speech.
والعاذور: ما يقطع من مخفض الجارية
And al-'ādhūr: what is cut from the lower part of a young girl.
المعاذر مكاذب
Excuses are lies.
وأصابع العذارى: صنف من العنب أسود طوال؛ كأنه البلوط يشبه بأصابع العذارى المخضبة
And 'aṣābi' al-'adhārā: a type of long, black grape; it resembles acorns and is likened to the dyed fingers of virgins.
لقيت منه عاذورا، أي شرا، وهو لغة في العاثور، أو لثغة
I encountered from him 'ādhūrā, meaning evil, and it is a variant of 'āthūr, or a lisp.
ترك المطر به عاذرا، أي أثرا، والجمع العواذير
The rain left 'ādhiran on it, meaning a trace, and the plural is al-'awādhīr.
والعاذرة: المرأة المستحاضة
And al-'ādhirah: the woman experiencing istihāḍah (abnormal uterine bleeding).
والوجه أن العاذر هو العرق نفسه، كما تقدم؛ لأنه يقوم بعذر المرأة مع أن المحفوظ والمعروف العاذل باللام، وقد أشرنا إليه
And the correct view is that al-'ādhira is the vein itself, as previously mentioned; because it accompanies the woman's excuse, although what is preserved and known is al-'ādhila with a 'lam', which we have indicated.
والله ما استعذرت إلي وما استنذرت، أي لم تقدم إلي المعذرة والإنذار
By Allah, you did not seek an excuse from me nor did you give me a warning, meaning you did not present an excuse or a warning to me.
ولوى عنه عذاره، إذا عصاه
And he turned away his rein from him, meaning he disobeyed him.
وفلان شديد العذار: يراد شديد العزيمة
And so-and-so is 'shadīd al-'idhār': meaning strong in resolve.
والعذيرة: الغديرة
And al-'udhīrah: a braid.
والعاذرة: ذو البطن، وقد أعذر
And al-'ādhirah: one with a large belly, and he has 'a'dhara (a large belly).
ودار عذرة: كثيرة الآثار، وأعذرتها، وأعذرت فيها، أي أثرت فيها
And a 'dharah dwelling: full of traces, and I 'a'dhartuhā, and I 'a'dhartu fīhā, meaning I left traces in it.
وضربه حتى أعذر متنه، أي أثقله بالضرب، واشتفى منه
And he struck him until his back was 'a'dhara, meaning he burdened him with blows and satisfied himself from him.
وأعذر منه: أصابه جراح يخاف عليه منه
And 'a'dhara minhu: he sustained wounds from him that caused fear for him.
عذرت الفرس عذرا: كويته في موضع العذار
'Adharta the horse 'adhran: I branded it in the place of the 'idhār.
وأيضاً حملت عليه عذاره، وأعذرته لغة
And also I put its 'idhār upon it, and 'a'dharatuhu is a variant.
وأعذرت إليك: بالغت في الموعظة والوصية
And I 'a'dhortu ilayka: I exerted myself in admonition and counsel.
وأعذرت عند السلطان: بلغت العذر
And I 'a'dhortu 'inda al-sulṭān: I reached the point of making an excuse (or fulfilling my duty).
