Ibn al-A'rābī said: al-ḍabghaṭarī: what you carry on your head and place your hand over it; so that it does not fall.

وفي نسخة اللسان العين الذي ينصب في الزرع يفزع به الطير

And in the Lisan al-Arab manuscript, the 'ayn [letter] refers to that which is set up in the field to frighten birds.
