And Dhu al-Shanāter, with fatha, as it is a plural of 'shanṭarah', which is the most common and famous.

They said: He used to marry the youths of Himyar so that they would not rule; because they did not rule over them by marriage.

Then he heard of a handsome boy named Dhu Nuwas, because of a lock of hair that dangled on his shoulders, so he sent for him to do with him.

فلما خلا به جب مذاكيره، وقطع رأسه، ووضعه في طاقة حصينة مشرفة على عسكره

When he was alone with him, his testicles shriveled, and he cut off his head, and placed it in a strong window overlooking his army.

فقالوا به رطب أم يابس؟ قال: سلوا الرأس الجالس؟

So they asked about him, 'Is he moist or dry?' He said: 'Ask the sitting head?'

فقالوا: ما يستحق الملك إلا من أراحنا من هاذا الجبار، فولوه الملك، وهو صاحب الأخدود المذكور في القرآن لأنه تهود

So they said: 'No one deserves kingship except he who has relieved us from this tyrant', so they made him king, and he is the companion of the Trench mentioned in the Quran because he converted to Judaism.

وكان ملك ذي الشناتر سبعا وعشرين سنة

And the reign of Dhu al-Shanāter was twenty-seven years.

لقب به لإصبع زائدة له

He was given this title because of an extra finger he had.

ويقال: معناه: ذو القرطة، كما في الصحاح واللسان.

And it is said: its meaning is: Dhu al-Qirṭah, as in Al-Sihah and Al-Lisan.
