That he asked the Prophet, peace be upon him, for permission to give away his wealth. He said: No. He said: Half? He said: No. He said: A third? He said: A third, and a third is a lot.

كانَ عِنْدَنا شَطْرٌ مِنْ شَعِيرٍ

We had half a measure of barley.

أَنَّهُ رَهَنَ دِرْعَهُ بِشَطْرٍ مِنْ شَعِيرٍ

That he mortgaged his armor for half a measure of barley.

فَوَضَعَ شَطْرَهَا

So he reduced it by half.

الطَّهُورُ شَطْرُ الإِيمَانِ

Purification is half of faith.

فَوَلِّ وَجْهَكَ شَطْرَ المَسْجِدِ الحَرامِ

So turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque.

إنَّ العَسِيرَ بِهَا دَاءٌ مُخَامِرُهَا فَشَطِّرْهَا نَظَرَ العَيْنَيْنِ مَحْسُورُ

Indeed, difficulty is a lingering illness within her, so direct her gaze of the eyes, exhausted.

أَنْ تَحْلِبَ شَطْرًا، وَتَتْرُكَ شَطْرًا

To milk one part, and leave one part.

وَإِذا كانَ بِهاذا المَعْنَى فَلا يَتَصَرَّفُ الفِعْلُ مِنْهُ

And if it is in this meaning, the verb is not derived from it.

حَلَبَ فُلانٌ الدَّهْرَ أَشْطُرَهُ

So-and-so has experienced all the vicissitudes of time.

إِذا كانَ نِصْفُ وَلَدِكَ ذُكُورًا وَنِصْفُهُمْ إِناثًا فَهُمْ شَطْرَةٌ، بِالكَسْرِ

If half of your children are male and half are female, then they are shaṭrah, with kasrah.

بَلَغَ الكَيْلُ شَطْرَهُ

The measure reached its half.

صارَ كَأَنَّهُ يَنْظُرُ إِلَيْكَ وَإِلى آخِرَ

It became as if he is looking at you and at another.

لَا تَدَعْنِي فِيهِمْ شَطِيرًا إِنِّي إِذاً أَهْلِكُ أَوْ أَطِيرُ

Do not leave me among them as a stranger, for then I would perish or fly away.

إِذا كُنْتَ في سَعْدٍ وَأُمُّكَ مِنْهُمْ شَطِيرًا فَلا يَغُرَّنَّكَ خَالُكَ مِنْ سَعْدٍ

If you are among Sa'd and your mother is from them, a stranger, do not let your maternal uncle from Sa'd deceive you.

لَوْ أَنَّ رَجُلَيْنِ شَهِدَا عَلَى رَجُلٍ بِحَقٍّ، أَحَدُهُمَا شَطِيرٌ فَإِنَّهُ يُحْمَلُ شَهَادَةُ الآخَرِ

If two men testified for a man regarding a right, one of them being a stranger, then the testimony of the other is accepted.

مِنْ مَنَعَ صَدَقَةً فَإِنَّا آخِذُوهَا وَشَطْرَ مَالِهِ عَزْمَةً مِنْ عَزَمَاتِ رَبِّنَا

Whoever withholds charity, then we shall take it (the Zakat) and half of his wealth, as a firm decree from our Lord.
