And Ya'qub recited in inversion: 'Indeed, we strike Ja'far with our swords, like a stranger riding the remnants (asār), intending as'ār but inverted.'
وفي حديث الفضل بن عباس (لا أوثر! بسؤرك أحدا)، أي لا أتركه لأحد غيري.
And in the hadith of Al-Fadl ibn Abbas (I will not give preference with your remnant to anyone), meaning 'I will not leave it for anyone other than myself.'
وأسأر منه شيئا: أبقاه وأفضله، ويستعمل في الطعام والشراب كسأر، كمنع.
And he left something of it behind: he kept it and left it as surplus, and it is used for food and drink like 'sa'ara', as in 'mana'a'.
وفي الحديث (إذا شربتم فأسئروا) أي أبقوا شيئا من الشراب في قعر الإناء.
And in the hadith (When you drink, leave a remainder), meaning 'leave something of the drink at the bottom of the vessel.'
والفاعل منهما سآر كشداد، على غير قياس.
And the doer of both is 'sā'r', like 'shaddād', which is irregular.
وروى بعضهم بيت الأخطل هاكذا: وشارب مربح بالكأس نادمني لا بالحصور ولا فيها بسآر أي أنه لا يسئر في الإناء سؤرا، بل يشتفه كله، والرواية المشهورة: بسوار، أي بمعربد وثاب كما سيأتي.
And some narrated the verse of Al-Akhtal thus: 'And a generous drinker entertained me with wine, neither abstinent nor leaving a remainder in it (bi-sā'r),' meaning he does not leave a remainder in the vessel, but drinks it all. The famous narration is 'bi-sawār', meaning drunk and boisterous, as will come later.
والقياس مسئر، قال الجوهري: ونظيره أجبره فهو جبار.
And the analogy is 'mus'ir', Al-Jawhari said: 'And its parallel is 'ajbarahu fa-huwa jabbār' (He compelled him, so he is a compeller).'
وفي التهذيب: ويجوز أن يكون سآر من سأرت ومن أسأرت، كأنه رد في الأصل، كما قالوا دراك من أدركت، وجبار من أجبرت.
And in Al-Tahdhib: 'It is permissible for 'sā'r' to be from 'sa'arta' and from 'as'arta', as if it were returned to the origin, as they said 'darrāk' from 'adrakta' and 'jabbār' from 'ajabarta'.
وفيه! سؤرة، أي بقية من شباب.
And in it is 'su'rah', meaning a remnant of youth.
وفي الأساس: يقال ذالك للمرأة اتي جاوزت الشباب ولم يهرمها الكبر.
And in Al-Asas: 'This is said of a woman who has passed youth and old age has not yet weakened her.'
هاذه سؤرة من القرآن وسؤر منه، أي بقية منه وقطعة، لغة في سورة، بالواو.
This is a 'su'rah' from the Quran and a 'su'r' from it, meaning a remainder or piece of it, a variant pronunciation for 'sūrah', with a waw.
وأما قوله: وسائر الناس همج، فإن أهل اللغة اتفقوا على أن معنى سائر في أمثال هاذا الموضع بمعنى الباقي، من قولك أسأرت سؤرا وسؤرة إذا أفضلتها وأبقيتها.
As for his saying: 'And the rest of the people are like locusts,' the linguists agreed that the meaning of 'sā'ir' in examples like this is 'the remaining,' from your saying 'as'arta su'ran' and 'su'rah' if you left it over and kept it.
والسائر: الباقي، وكأنه من سأر يسأر فهو سائر.
And 'al-sā'ir': the remaining, and it is as if from 'sa'ara' yus'iru, so he is 'sā'ir'.
وفي الحديث (فضل عائشة على النساء كفضل الثريد على سائر الطعام)، أي باقيه.
And in the hadith ('The superiority of Aisha over women is like the superiority of thareed over the rest of the food'), meaning its remainder.
قال ابن الأثير: والناس يستعملونه في معنى الجميع، وليس بصحيح، وتكررت هاذه اللفظة في الحديث وكله بمعنى باقي الشيء، والباقي: الفاضل، وهاذه العبارة مأخوذة من التكملة.
Ibn Al-Athir said: 'And people use it to mean 'all', and it is not correct. This word is repeated in the hadith, and it all means the remaining part of the thing, and the remainder is the surplus. And this phrase is taken from Al-Takmilah.'
ونصها: سائر الناس: بقيتهم، وليس معناه جماعتهم كما زعم من قصرت معرفته، انتهى.
And its text is: 'The rest of the people: their remainder, and its meaning is not their group as claimed by one whose knowledge is limited, end quote.'
ومنه قول الأحوص الشاعر: فجلتها لنا لبابة لما وقذ النوم سائر الحراس.
And from it is the saying of the poet Al-Ahwas: 'So Lubabah revealed it to us when sleep overcame all the guards.'
وكذا قول الشاعر: ألزم العالمون حبك طرا فهو فرض في سائر الأديان فالسائر فيهما بمعنى الجميع.
And likewise the saying of the poet: 'The scholars have all adhered to your love; it is an obligation in all religions,' so 'al-sā'ir' in both means 'all'.
وضاف أعرابي قوما فأمروا الجارية بتطييبه، فقال (بطني عطري، وسائري ذري). وهو من أمثالهم المشهورة ومعنى سائري، أي جميعي.
An Arab nomad visited a people, and they ordered the slave girl to perfume him. He said, 'My stomach is perfumed, and all of me is dust.' This is from their famous proverbs, and the meaning of 'sā'irī' is 'all of me.'
فأبطؤوا عنه حتى أسروا وأخذوا وذهب بهم، ثم جاؤوا يسألون عنهم، فقال لهم المسؤول هاذا القول الذي ذهب مثلا: ((أسائر اليوم وقد زال الظهر)).
So they delayed in responding to him until they were captured and taken away. Then they came asking about them, and the one asked said to them this saying which became a proverb: '((Is it the rest of the day, and the afternoon has passed?))'
قال الزمخشري: يضرب لما يرجى نيله وفات وقته، (أي أتطمعون فيما بعد وقد تبين لكم اليأس، لأن من كانت حاجته اليوم بأسره وقد زال الظهر وجب أن ييأس كما ييأس منها بالغروب).
Al-Zamakhshari said: 'It is used for something hoped for whose time has passed, (meaning, do you hope for something later when despair has become clear to you? Because whoever had a need for the day, and the afternoon has passed, it is necessary for them to despair as they despair at sunset).'
وسئر، كفرح: بقي، وأسأر: أبقى.
And 'sa'ira', as in 'fariha': to remain, and 'as'ara': to leave behind.
وسؤر الأسد هو أبو خبيئة محمد بن خالد الكوفي، عن أنس، وعنه الثوري، لأن الأسد افترسه فتركه حيا فلقب بذالك، وهو مجاز.
And 'Su'r al-Asad' is Abu Khubay'ah Muhammad ibn Khalid al-Kufi, from Anas, and from him Al-Thawri, because the lion attacked him and left him alive, so he was nicknamed thus, and this is metaphorical.
وكذالك قولهم: هاذ سؤرة الصقر، لما يبقى من لحمته.
And likewise their saying: 'This is the remnant of the falcon's prey,' referring to what remains of its meat.
وتساءر كتقابل وفي التكملة كتقبل: شرب سؤر النبيذ وبقاياه، عن اللحياني.
And 'tasā'ara', as in 'taqābala', and in Al-Takmilah as 'taqabbala': to drink the remnant of nabidh and its leftovers, from Al-Lihyani.
سؤرة المال: جيده.
The 'su'rah' of wealth: its best part.
وأسأر الحاسب: أفضل ولم يستقص وهو مجاز.
And the accountant 'as'ara': he left a surplus and did not complete it, and this is metaphorical.
ويقال في السائر: سار أيضا، وأنشد قول أبي ذؤيب يصف ظبية: فسود ماء المرد فاها فلونه كلون النوور وهي أدماء سارها قال: أي! سائرها.
And it is said for 'sā'ir': 'sār' also. And the saying of Abu Dhu'ayb is recited, describing a doe: 'So the water of the marsh darkened her mouth, and its color is like the color of the nuwwar, and she is a spotted doe, her 'sārah' (meaning 'sā'iruhā' - the rest of her).'
سؤر الذئب، قال: وهو شاعر مشهور.
Su'r al-Dhi'b, he said: 'And he is a famous poet.'
