And it is said that al-dhafir applies to both pleasant and unpleasant scents, and they are distinguished by what is added to them and how they are described.
والذفر: الص ان وخبث الرحي، رجل ذفر وامرأة ذفراء، أي لهم صنان وخبث ريح
And al-dhafir: staleness and foulness of breath; a man is dhafir and a woman is dhafra', meaning they have staleness and foul breath.

ولا تتبين تلك الذفرة في اللبن وهي مرة ومنابتها الغلظ
And that scent is not apparent in the milk, and it is bitter and grows in rough terrain.
تظل حفراه من التهدله في روض ذفراء ورغل مخجل
Its burrows remain from the drooping in meadows of dhafra' and shame-inducing rghal.

There was a woman from the clients of Thaqif who married into Ghamid among Banu Kathir, and she always dyed her children's clothes yellow, so they were named Bani Dhufra', meaning the yellow hue of the Dhufra' plant, and they are known in Yemen as Bani Dhufra'.
