Abu Ubayd said: And what I think is that it is 'al-ḥabr' with fatha, and its meaning is one who is skilled in embellishing speech and knowledge and improving it.

قال كعب بن مالك: لقد جزيت بغدرتها الحبور

Ka'b ibn Malik said: She has been repaid for her treachery with great joy.

قال أبو عبيد: وأما الأحبار والرهبان فإن الفقهاء قد اختلفوا فيهم، فبعضهم يقول: حير، وبعضهم يقول: حبر بالكسر وهو أفصح؛ لأنه يجمع على أفعال، دون فعل

Abu Ubayd said: As for the 'aḥbār' and 'ruhban', the jurists have differed regarding them; some say 'ḥayr', and some say 'ḥibr' with kasra, and it is more eloquent; because it is pluralized as 'af'āl', not 'fi'āl'.

والجمع أحبار وحبور.

And the plural is 'aḥbār' and 'ḥubūr'.

لقد أشمتت بي أهل فيد وغادرت بجسمي حبرا بنت مصان باديا

You have made the people of Fayd gloat over me and left a visible mark on my body, O daughter of Muṣān.

وفي الحديث: (يخرج رجل من أهل النار قد ذهب حبره وسبره) ؛ أي لونه وهيئته

And in the Hadith: (A man will emerge from the people of Hell whose beauty and appearance have gone); meaning his color and form.

قال ابن أحمر، وذك زمانا: لبسنا حبره حتى اقتضينا لأعمال وآجال قضينا

Ibn Aḥmar said, and he mentioned a time: We wore his splendor until we fulfilled our deeds and destined fates.

وقال شمر: أوله الحبر، وهي صفرة، فإذا اخضر فهو القلح، فإذا ألح على اللثة حتى تظهر الأسناخ فهو الحفر والحفر

And Shammir said: The first stage is 'al-ḥibr', which is yellowness; when it turns greenish, it is 'al-qalaḥ'; when it persists on the gums until the roots appear, it is 'al-ḥafr' and 'al-ḥufr'.

وقد حبرت أسنانه كفرح تحبر حبرا أي قلحت

And his teeth have become yellowed, as in 'fariḥa', they become yellowed with 'ḥabaran', meaning they have become yellowish.

وفي الكتاب العزيز: {فهم فى روضة يحبرون} (الروم: 15) أي يسرون

And in the Noble Book: {Then they will be in a garden, rejoicing} (Ar-Rum: 15), meaning they will be made happy.

وقال الليث: أي ينعمون ويكرمون.

And Al-Layth said: meaning they are blessed and honored.

وبجلده حبار الضرب، وبيده حبار العمل، وانظر إلى حبار عمله، وهو الأثر.

And on his skin is the trace of the beating, and on his hand is the trace of the work, and look at the trace of his work, which is the mark.

وشيء حبر: ناعم، قال المرار العدوي: قد لبست الدهر من أفنانه كل فن ناعم منه حبر

And something 'ḥibr': soft, Al-Mirar Al-Adawi said: I have worn from its branches throughout time every kind of soft thing, including 'ḥibr'.

And Ibn Sīdah said: And the letter 'khā' is superior.

And 'al-ḥubārā', with damma: a long-necked bird, gray in color, shaped like a goose, with a long beak, and it is its nature to be hunted and not to hunt.
