والجمار، (كرمان: شحم النخلة) الذي في قمة رأسها، تقطع قمتها، ثم يكشط عن جمارة في جوفها بيضاء، كأنها قطعة سنام ضخمة، وهي رخصة، تؤكل بالعسل والكافور، يخرج من الجمارة بين مشق السعفتين، (كالجامور) ، وهاذه عن الصغاني.
And al-jamār, (Kirmān: the fat of the palm tree) which is at the top of its head; its top is cut off, then a white jammārah is scraped from its interior, like a huge piece of camel hump, and it is soft, eaten with honey and camphor, emerging from the jammārah between the split fronds, (like al-jāmūr), and this is from al-Ṣaghānī.
وقد جمر النخلة: قطع جمارها أو جامورها، وقد تقدم في كلام المصنف.
And he 'jamara' the palm tree: meaning he cut its pith (jamār) or its core (jāmūr), and this has been previously mentioned in the author's words.
والجمار، (كسحاب: الجماعة).
And al-jamār, (like saḥāb: a group).
وقال الأصمعي: عد فلان إبله جمارا، إذا عدها ضربة واحدة، ومنه قول ابن أحمر: وظل رعاؤها يلقون منها إذا عدت نظائر أو جمارا
And al-Aṣmaʿī said: So-and-so counted his camels as jammāran, meaning he counted them all at once. And from this is the saying of Ibn Aḥmar: And their shepherds would spend the night among them, counting them either in pairs or in bulk.
قال: والنظائر: أن تعد مثنى مثنى، والجمار: أن تعد جماعة
He said: And al-naẓā'ir is counting them two by two, and al-jammār is counting them as a group.
وقد جمرت المرأة شعرها، إذا ضفرته جمائر، واحدتها جميرة، وهي الضفائر والضمائر والجمائر.
And a woman 'jamarat' her hair, meaning she braided it into braids (jamā'ir), the singular of which is jumayrah, and they are braids, plaits, and bunches of hair.
وابنا جمير كأمير: الليل والنهار ؛ سميا بذلك للاجتماع، كما سميا ابني سمير ؛ لأنه يسمر فيهما.
And Ibnay Jumayr, like amīr: the night and the day; they were named thus for their coming together, just as they are called Ibnay Samīr, because one spends the night conversing in them.
وأجمرت الليلة: استسر فيها الهلال.
And the night 'ajmarat': the crescent moon was hidden in it.
وإن أطاف ولم يظفر بطائلة في ظلمة ابن جمير ساور الفطما
And if he prowled and did not find prey in the darkness of Ibn Jumayr, he would attack the young ones.
يقال: جاءنا فحمة بن جمير، وأنشد: عند ديجور فحمة بن جمير طرقتنا والليل داج بهيم
It is said: Faḥmat ibn Jumayr came to us, and he recited: In the deep darkness of Faḥmat ibn Jumayr, you visited us while the night was dark and gloomy.
لا أفعل ذلك ما جمر ابن جمير
I will not do that as long as Ibn Jumayr exists.
والمجيمر: جبل
And al-Mujaymir: a mountain.
خف مجمر: صلب شديد مجتمع، وقيل: هو الذي نكبته الحجارة وصلب.
A 'mujammir' hoof: hard, strong, and compact; and it is said to be one that has been struck by stones and hardened.
ونعيم بن عبد الله، مولى عمر رضي الله عنه، المجمر، بكسرها ؛ لأنه كان يجمر المسجد ؛ أي يلي إجمار مسجد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، وربما شدد الميم، كما في شروح البخاري.
And Nu'aym ibn 'Abd Allah, the freedman of 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, al-Mujammir, with a kasra on the second letter; because he used to 'mujammir' the mosque, meaning he was in charge of perfuming the mosque of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and sometimes the 'm' was doubled, as in the commentaries of Al-Bukhari.
وأجمر الرجل والبعير: أسرع في السير وعدا، ولا تقل: أجمز، بالزاي، قال لبيد: وإذا حركت غرزي أجمرت أو قرابي عدو جون قد أبل
And a man and a camel 'ajmara': meaning they hastened in their journey and ran. And do not say 'ajmaz' with a zayn. Labīd said: And when I stirred my saddlebag, it hastened, or my waterskin, a black enemy that had recovered.
وأجمر الفرس: وثب في القيد، كجمر، من حد ضرب، كلاهما عن الزجاج.
And a horse 'ajmara': it leaped in its tether, like 'jamara', from the verb form 'ḍaraba', both from al-Zajjāj.
وأجمر ثوبه: بخره بالطيب، كجمره تجميرا.
And he 'ajmara' his garment: meaning he perfumed it with incense, like 'jammarahu' (tajjmīran).
إذا أجمرتم الميت فجمروه ثلاثا
If you fumigate the deceased, then fumigate him three times.
وأجمر النار مجمرا: هيأها.
And he 'ajmara' the fire (mujammara): meaning he prepared it.
وأجمر البعير: استوى خفه، فلا خط بين سلامييه ؛ وذالك إذا نكبته الجمار وصلب.
And a camel 'ajmara': its hoof became firm, with no crack between its joints; and that is when the stones have struck it and it has hardened.
وأجمر النخل: خرصها، ثم حسب فجمع خرصها ؛ وذالك الخارص مجمر.
And he 'ajmara' the palms: meaning he estimated their yield (kharṣ), then calculated and gathered their yield; and that estimator is a 'mujammir'.
وأجمر الأمر بني فلان: عمهم جميعا.
And the matter 'ajmara' the people of so-and-so: meaning it encompassed them all.
وأجمر الخيل: أضمرها وجمعها.
And he 'ajmara' the horses: meaning he prepared them and gathered them.
واستجمر: استنجى بالجمار ؛ وهي الأحجار الصغار.
And he 'istajmara': meaning he performed istinja' with al-jimār; which are small stones.
إذا توضأت فانثر، وإذا استجمرت فأوتر
When you perform ablution, scatter (water), and when you perform istinja', do so an odd number of times.
وجمره: أعطاه جمرا.
And he 'jamarahu': meaning he gave him embers.
وجمر فلانا وذمره: نحاه، قيل: ومنه الجمار بمنى كذا أجاب به أبو العباس ثعلب حين سئل.
And he 'jamara' someone and 'dhamarahu': meaning he pushed him away. It is said: And from this is al-Jimār in Minā. This is how Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Thaʿlabī answered when asked.
أو من قولهم: أجمر إذا أسرع ؛ لأن آدم عليه السلام رمى إبليس عليه اللعنة بمنى فأجمر بين يديه ؛ أي أسرع، كما ورد في الحديث، وأورده ابن الأثير وغيره.
Or from their saying: 'ajmara' when one hastens; because Adam, peace be upon him, threw stones at Iblīs, may Allah curse him, in Minā, and he 'ajmara' before him; meaning he hastened, as mentioned in the hadith, and Ibn al-Athīr and others have narrated it.
استجمر بالمجمر، إذا تبخر بالعود، عن أبي حنيفة.
He 'istajmara' with the 'mujammir', meaning he perfumed himself with oud, from Abū Ḥanīfah.
وثوب مجمر مكبى، إذا دخن عليه.
And a 'mujammir' garment, covered, meaning it was smoked with incense.
والجامر: الذي يلي ذالك من غير فعل، إنما هو على النسب، قال: وريح يلنجوج يذكيه جامره
And al-jāmir: is the one who attends to that without active participation, it is based on attribution. He said: And a pleasant scent that its jāmir makes fragrant.
وجمرهم الأمر: أحوجهم إلى الانضمام.
And the matter 'jamarahum': meaning it made them in need of joining together.
والجمرة: الخصلة من الشعر.
And al-jamrah: a lock of hair.
وجمير الشعر: ما جمر منه أنشد ابن الأعرابي: كأن جمير قصتها إذا ما حمسنا
And jumayr al-shiʿr: the part of it that is gathered. Ibn al-Aʿrābī recited: As if the jumayr of her braid when we were zealous.
والمجمر: موضع رمي الجمار هنالك، قال حذيفة بن أنس الهذلي: لأدركهم شعث النواصي كأنهم سوابق حجاج توافي المجمرا
And al-Majmar: the place of stoning the Jamār there. Ḥudhayfah ibn Anas al-Hudhalī said: I will reach them with disheveled forelocks, as if they were the vanguard of pilgrims arriving at al-Majmar.
والجمرة: الظلمة الشديدة.
And al-jamrah: intense darkness.
وذبحوا فجمروا: أي وضعوا اللحم على الجمر، ولحم مجمر.
And they slaughtered and 'jammarū': meaning they placed the meat on the embers, and 'majmūr' meat.
وبنو جمرة: حي من العرب.
And Banū Jamrah: a tribe of Arabs.
والجامور: القبر.
And al-jāmūr: the grave.
والجامور من السفينة معروف.
And al-jāmūr of a ship is known.
والجامور: الرأس ؛ تشبيها بجامور السفينة، قال كراع: إنما تسميه بذالك العامة.
And al-jāmūr: the head; by analogy with the prow of a ship. Krāʿ said: The common people call it that.
وفلان لا يعرف الجمرة من التمرة.
And so-and-so does not know the jamrah from the tamrah (date).
ويقال: كان ذالك عند سقوط الجمرة، وهن ثلاث جمرات: الأولى في الهواء، والثانية في التراب، والثالثة في الماء ؛ وذالك حين اشتداد الحر.
And it is said: That was at the time of the falling of the jamrah, and they are three jamrāt: the first in the air, the second in the earth, and the third in the water; and that is when the heat intensified.
وروكوب الخيل تعدو المعطى قد علاها نجد فيه اجمرار هاكذا رواه أبو جعفر النحاس بالجيم؛ قال: لأنه يصف تجعد عرقها وتجمعه.
And riding horses running, their sweat has become 'ijmirār' (gathered/wrinkled). Abū Jaʿfar al-Naḥḥās narrated it with a 'jīm'; he said: Because it describes the wrinkling and gathering of their sweat.
إذا عطفت خلاخلهن غصت بجمارات بردي خدال شبه أسوق البردي الغضة بشحم النخل، فسماها جمارا، ثم استعاره لأسوق النساء.
When their anklets swayed, they were submerged in the 'jamārāt' of tender reeds, likening the tender reed stalks to palm pith, so he called them 'jamār', then he borrowed it for the legs of women.
وشعب جمار: موضع بالمغرب.
And Shaʿb Jammār: a place in the Maghreb.
وجمور الدقل: الخشبة المثقوبة في رأس دقل السفينة المركبة فيه.
And jumūr al-daqal: the perforated wooden beam at the head of the mast of the ship it is mounted on.
قال ابن أحمر: يظل رعاؤها يلقون منها إذا عدت نظائر أو جمارا
Ibn Aḥmar said: And their shepherds would spend the night among them, counting them either in pairs or in bulk.
والجمرة، بالضم: الظلمة، وأيضا الضفيرة.
And al-jamrah, with a damma: darkness, and also a braid.
والجامر: هو المجمر، قاله الليث، وأنشد: وريح يلنجوج يذكيه جامره
And al-jāmir: is al-mujammir, said al-Layth, and he recited: And a pleasant scent that its jāmir makes fragrant.
وأخفاف جمر بضمتين إذا كانت صلبة، قال بشير بن النكث: فوردت عند هجير المهتج والظل محفوف بأخفاف جمر
And 'akhfāf jamr' (with two dammas) if they were hard. Bashīr ibn al-Nukth said: So I arrived at the peak of the midday heat, and the shade was surrounded by hard hooves.
وحافر مجمر، كمحسن: صلب، لغة في مجمر، بفتح الميم، عن الفراء.
And a 'mujmarr' hoof, like 'muḥsin': hard, a variant pronunciation of 'mujammir', with a fatḥa on the mīm, from al-Farā'.
