قالوا: وبه سمي الرجل، (ضد) ، أي باعتبار الوصف، كما قاله شيخنا، وأنشدنا عن شيوخه:

They said: And by it, the man was named, (as an opposite), meaning by consideration of the description, as our shaykh said, and he recited to us from his shaykhs:

فإخاله غصنا بشاطيء جعفر

So I think it is a branch on the bank of Ja'far.

قلت: وأنشد ابن الأعرابي: تأود عسلوج على شط جعفر

I said: And Ibn al-A'rabi recited: A slender branch swayed on the bank of Ja'far.

وقيل: الجعفر: هو (النهر الملآن)

And it was said: Al-Ja'far: it is the (full river).

وبه شبهت الناقة (الغزيرة) ، (أو فوق الجدول)

And by it, the (abundant) she-camel was likened, (or above the stream).

والنوادر: الجعفر: النهر الصغير فوق الجدول.

And Al-Nawadir: Al-Ja'far: the small river above the stream.

وقال ابن دريد: الجعفر: النهر، فإذا كان صغيرا فهو فلج.

And Ibn Duraid said: Al-Ja'far: the river, and if it is small, it is a stream.

من المجاز: الجعفر: (الناقة الغزيرة) اللبن؛ شبهت بالنهر الملآن.
